Very unrealistic to have 40 studs on the 40-man. I think they are leveraging it properly. The issue is when we need the room for players who require protection.

Think about adding those players plus Jobe, Olson, Meadows, Hurter and Horn needing space cleared for their returns.  So 10 40-man spots needing to be opened is a real necessity.

And even more if we activate Verlander, and if we hang onto guys like Vest, Sweeney and Wenceel

I want you to worry about other, more important things.  AI, population declines, forest fires, trades setting us back 10-15 years, etc.

If you think about it, there’s a 20-30 window of opportunity that’s going to happen this weekend.  It’s either 10-15 years of dynasty or 10-15 years of misery.

Another look at the kinds of returns teams have gotten for #1 or #2 starters at the deadline in the past decade.  It's not pretty.  I don't know about winning and losing a trade.  That's complicated, but the propects acquired have not turned out great.  The best return in the past decade was Norris and Boyd.

Here's my latest offseason 40 man math.

Your graph basically confirms the point I was making earlier.  There are a lot of guys currently on the 40-man now who won’t be next spring.  And we will be better for that.

Yes, there’s a lot to jettison simply based on the current 60 day IL guys.  Those guys will be brought back to the 40 and someone else has to be removed at some point, whether it’s at activation or the offseason.

Let’s hope we have some more difficult choices come Monday night.

Genuinely curious as to how Harris plays this.  I know the lazy narrative all over Twitter is that this is a fire sale.  I don’t see it that way.  It’s basically maximizing the value of expiring assets. If we walk away with a solid SP (I.e., Sheehan) that we can plug into the rotation, along with a couple of bullpen upgrades and a highly rated outfielder and/or 1B that is either ready or close, we should still competitive this year.

And moving a lot of salary allows Harris to move an existing or newly acquired prospect or two for a more reliable bullpen arm and/or OF upgrade, but not as rentals.

A fire sale to me is trying to save payroll or tank. I don’t think either applies here.

I kind of wonder about Cruz and his versatility.  But I suppose his AAA numbers render him to the DFA pasture.

Some of those DFA names like Gipson-Long and Workman are going to get some people all mopey eyed.  I remember when they were going to be something.

Barnhart is interesting.  He was just acquired for Rogers.  There were financial reasons to see, a trade off of Rogers and that was accomplished.  Barnhart has some encouraging SO numbers but uninspiring BB numbers.  And he appears to be old for his level (24 at A ball).  Has he been assigned to a Detroit minor league team yet?

The best addition they might make is to the medical/training staff. They had a lot of guys injured in the minors as well. They really need their best players on the field.

It does seem like that’s a problem.  But I’ll be honest, I don’t know if it’s any better/worse than other clubs.

The problem I see is how many guys we have who keep getting repeatedly hurt with the same type of injury.  Mize, Torres, Carpenter, among others.  As though their rehab processes aren’t impactful enough or we try to rush guys back too fast.

re-injury after muscle stain is always an elevated risk - even out to a year in some cases. So once injured that risk is going to be there. But it does seem the org needs to take a hard look at their whole training regime to try to avoid the initial injury. Of course even if the team is providing good training guidance, it's hard to guarantee guys commit to it in place of how they want to work out.

Deep analysis....

I really don’t believe anything I read this time of year regarding trade status.  This is the Super Bowl for national and regional baseball reporters and they have to keep generating content, conflating opinions with limited intel.  Think Mel Kiper during the NFL draft—it’s their small window of relevance.

It is fun to read, though, and speculate.
