No, he just said his opinion was he would be in spring training to win a spot. Like...can't miss. It was just his opinion and I respect that. But isn't the kid at AA? I hope he is in MLB next season, if there IS a season. Quote
AlaskanTigersFan Posted August 2 Posted August 2 All I have to say is, "I TOLD YOU SO!!!!!" MUWAHAHAHAHA. I literally NAILED this and 80% of you said I was bat**** crazy. Good stuff for the Tigers. Now Mize and Torres. Both should also net top 100 prospects. Quote
IdahoBert Posted August 2 Posted August 2 So, the Tigers are calling this a “blockbuster deal” etc., etc. on mlb.com. Is it? Is it instead the best you can do in a bad world? Quote

The packages you were proposing were much higher value. 1 Quote
Sports_Freak Posted August 2 Posted August 2 So now there's money on our payroll to trade for established players? Get some relievers, Scott. Quick, while there's still time. Anybody good available? Quote

This is not what I think anyone looks at as a “franchise altering trade” that is the difference of purgatory or contention for 5 years. At this point in the season, I make this trade. However, when was the last time a Dodgers home grown pitcher became who they were projected to be for them or someone else? Ryan is a reliever to me long term and could be a super closer which is valuable. Hope is solid, Compared to recent deadline deals, I think we got good value, but definitely not no doubt great value. Sheehan and one of the other 3 OF’s would have been closer to that IMO. Quote

I didnt see anyone call this return. But...whatever. It's done...history. Quote

I sure hope Hope becomes a MLB All Star but it may be a ways off. Quote

lordstanley Posted August 2 Posted August 2 Doolittle of ESPN.com gives trade grades of A to the Dodgers, D to the Tigers and non-Dodgers baseball fans an F. He also mentions the Tigers' "July collapse" (huh, 1-4 stretch is all I can think of) though. https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/49469642/mlb-trade-deadline-grades-2026-tarik-skubal-los-angeles-dodgers-detroit-tigers-blockbuster Quote

Given it's mainstream sports media, it's probably a good sign for the Tigers that they don't like it. Quote

We are still more than a day from the deadline, after all, and sometimes, teams get a little aggressive as the clock ticks down. Could the Tigers have gotten more if they had leveraged that? Alas, we will never know." Could you imagine the fan reaction if they had failed to trade Skubal because they let time run down to the very end and had unrealistic demands that the Dodgers were never going to meet? What a ridiculous comment. Edited August 2 by mtutiger Quote
Jason_R Posted August 2 Posted August 2 I don't claim to follow minor league prospects closely but the return seems underwhelming. I also have not heard anything related to a new contract for Skubal. I assume Boras wants to take the next contract to market, which limited the returns trade partners wanted to give. Quote

Hart Posted August 2 Posted August 2 I have not seen this mentioned but I think it's worth being part of the discussion. Does Hope look like he could have trouble with his weight down the line? He looks like a bowling ball running back right now, even if his weight doesn't reflect this. Maybe this is a good thing? The scouting reports are positive on his speed and athleticism so if it is a concern, it's a small concern. Quote
mtutiger Posted August 2 Posted August 2 Just now, diaspora04 said: In fairness, they had all day today to cajole other teams into a better deal. Maybe there just wasn't one. Exactly. Doolittle's comment operates from the premise that the Tigers had a lot more leverage than they actually did in this situation. But if the Brewers, Rays, others weren't gonna field offers, what leverage did they have? As great a pitcher as he is, he's a rental. If anyone wants to be mad at the return, would probably be better to focus on other teams for not really considering a deal for Skubal. Quote
lordstanley Posted August 2 Posted August 2 I'm not mad at the return. But the Tigers better turn around and beef up the playoff chances of a team that is 5.5 games behind the American League's #2 seed and 2.5 games behind a playoff spot. The team needs bullpen help and to ignore that would be a kick in the head to fans. 2 1 Quote
Hart Posted August 2 Posted August 2 We have may have been able to get Lara from the Brewers, plus a similar prospect to River Ryan. Not sure if I would prefer Lara or Hope. Hope has way more power potential. Lara is probably the better defensive player long term and lower risk of the two. That's just the level of prospect we were looking at as the main piece in this deal. The difference between the Brewers and Dodgers though in their ability to trade a guy like that for a possible rental is stark. Quote

Still a crap shoot. Had hoped Sheehan was part of the deal That's the thing people, including me, tend to forget: The Verlander return was considered a very good one at the time. It was also the trade that really highlighted for me just how sketchy Pipeline is as a ranking source. It's basically two guys who are plugged into the system and need access for their reporting. Look at the FanGraphs board and you'll see they have Hope at #57, not #25. He's also got five Dodgers above him, rather than four. https://www.fangraphs.com/prospects/the-board OTOH, FG has River Ryan at #22, not #68—which, at age 28, he better be ranking that high. But that also means he is probably moving right into the rotation as soon as he comes off the List. He's a strikeout guy who gives up almost no walks and has a FIP- that hasn't been above 81 since 2023, and that 81 was at the major league level. So he could actually be the sneaky good get in this deal. Quote
