monkeytargets39 Posted August 3 Posted August 3 I’m good with Mayfield as a return. That’s a solid get. My issue is if we were planning the last two weeks on moving Mize AND Skubal, then we should’ve just moved Gleyber also and given Jansen away. Unless they want to re-sign Gleyber. Quote
monkeytargets39 Posted August 3 Posted August 3 I could’ve bought into not buying bullpen help if we kept Mize and used the concept of Jobe/Ryan/Madden as the bullpen help. But now one of those guys is going to have to start games. 1 Quote
Tiger337 Posted August 3 Posted August 3 Interesting gif. I can't imagine the veteran players are happy with these deals. Quote

That assumes, of course, that there were buyers for either. Torres i then to think you could have gotten something semi-decent... maybe. Jansen l, though, what playoff team would want him? Is he that mich better than whomever they have that you'd be willing to give up anything for hi Quote
LongLiveMaroth Posted August 3 Posted August 3 Mayfield is a high floor low ceiling type. He should start in AA next season. Probably tops out at a #3 starter at his highest but is pretty reasonable to think he'll reach a #4 floor. I wonder if Mize's injury history limited his market a bit. Quote

The Tigers have playing much better than the Padres over the last 9 weeks. It's not clear to me why one team is a buyer and the other is a seller. Is the return really that much better than a comp pick? If you have to think about it for a minute then maybe the answer is no. Edited August 3 by SeattleMike Quote

But Harris didn't do much to try to make the team better, I guess because the Tigers were good enough and the playoffs were safe. The Tigers are 2.5 games out of of a playoff spot this season and 5.5 games behind the division lead, but Harris didn't do anything to make this year's team better, instead made it worse, because the Tigers apparently had no chance. So I guess the Tigers will never be active in improving at the trade deadline unless they are in that narrow window of no more than 2 games up on a playoff spot and no more than 2 games behind a playoff spot. Good to know. Only logical if you're working with partial information. Ignores Skubal/Mize leaving, CBT, return on talent, cost of acquiring talent.....but I understand the frustration. Quote
1984Echoes Posted August 3 Posted August 3 Kash Mayfield should hit AA next year and looks like an exciting... future/ potential... starter. Along with Brady Smith... some "close to the majors" starters that we received. Jake Miller and Andrew Sears should be in AAA in 2027, my guess. So this looks like a "filling the pipeline" move to me. Sort of bridging between Melton/ Jobe/ Montero and guys who are still in the low minors (recent years' draft picks plus 2026 draft picks) trying to find their way. As for Jackson Wolf... he USED to be good. 6'7" lefty who in 2022/23 (A+ and AA) K'd a little under 10/9 with 3 BB's/9 and a 1.15-ish WHIP. But since then has struggled badly in the high minors and MLB. I don't know... maybe the Tigers think they can fix him? Or put him in the bullpen and straighten him out? Just guessing... Quote

monkeytargets39 Posted August 3 Posted August 3 I have a feeling that Mize was moved because he has no ability to stay healthy and they expect his injury to keep plaguing him this year. I’m fine with moving on from some of these super unreliable and inconsistent players Quote

Torres is the confusing one to me... Why was he not moved...? Maybe they don't want to mess up the current "vibe" in the batting order? Quote
Graterol Posted August 3 Posted August 3 Would have liked to see Gleyber traded both for the return and to see what we have in Max, but overall perfectly whelmed by both trades. Nice to see some arms in minors (I see 7 interesting arms with Mayfield, Jacobs, Smith, Witherspoon, Salcedo, Spears, and Miller). Prices for BP help were high so I can understand not playing in that market. Valdez/Melton/Flaherty/Montero with Jobe and Ryan coming soon. Sommers/Anderson/Madden/De Jesus/Holton/Jansen/Finnegan Potentially Hurter and (doubtfully) Verlander. Not sure how much of a realistic upgrade was out there without trading a top 10 prospect. Quote

I think this is well articulated. It'd be easier to be excited by this deal if they were 10 games out of a playoff spot, harder with where they are currently sitting Edited August 3 by mtutiger 3 Quote

I have to believe that Harris has all minor league players rated on a master list that updates frequently and Mayfield was rated higher than a comp pick and perhaps higher than the Padres. Baseball is still a scouts/analyst game. Quote
