Maybe they have to and we don't.

Are you saying the Tigers are out of it or the team is good enough as is and likely to make a playoff run?

I thought Harris would address the bullpen. Probably is looking at River and Jackson to help

River doesnt appear close to returning and they don’t have much time to wait on him.  Jobe is probably needed to start after the Mize deal.  Even if they put him in the pen, this bullpen isn’t just one arm away from being fixed.

I feel like this is the first time in 58 years of following the Tigers where I felt they still had a shot and were playing well (since May) and they just gave up on the season at the deadline.  I am not upset about it, but it feels weird.  I understand it, but I don't like it.  Like I said, maybe I'll change my mind in a few years.  Or maybe this year if they pull another 2024.

Riley Greene- FA after 2028

Dillon Dingler FA after 2030

Kevin McGonigle FA after 2035

Troy Melton FA 2032

Should have dealt these guys too. Teams would have sent some great majik beans for them with all those years of team control.

Who cares about a world series when you can fly the top farm system banner.

Obviously you realize that those situations are completely different but sure.

Flukey is probably in there somewhere as well.

If one were to believe FanGraphs over Pipeline, it goes:

  1. Ryan
  2. Rainer
  3. Briceno
  4. Hope
  5. Liranzo
  6. Mayfield

Then a steep drop-off to:

  • Yost
  • Adams
  • Flukey

Although in fairness, Flukey hasn't even picked up a ball yet.

I don't know what "S" means, but according to this, that's good.

I think he just wanted to spell CHAT at the bottom and randomly threw the other teams in somewhere.

I was saying the front office might believe the latter, but I posted that before the Mize trade. Heck, they might still think they have a good shot at it. We still have a solid rotation, the bats have really picked up,m and we have the weakest schedule of just about anyone left.

And while I am at it, **** Jack Flaherty for posting that ****. He's definitely not part of the future, anyway. And if he wants to get paid by some second-division team this winter, he better not let his fee-fees **** up his performance when does come back.

I think of S as what you get when you pass a pass/fail course.

So cast your mind back to those glory days at Tigers AA with Faedo, Manning, Skubal, and Mize. The future of a rotation to conquer all.

Nothing now but dust and ashes my precious.

Photo from August 11, 2021 in my archives. Sigh..

These deals sort of fell well short of the multiple impact players some are here were fantasizing about.

I was warning people not to expect so much for 2 months rentals. Unrealistic expectations leads to huge disappointments.

I would put Flukey and Cris Rodriguez at #6 and #7 at the moment.

Flukey could/ should probably jump up higher but I want to see him in action first...

Between his union involvement and his 2024 WS Ring, Flaherty of all players should understand how this sport works

i dont mind any of this.  get the best deal you can for assets you are unlikely to extend in the future.

if skubal wished to be here, he wouldnt have hired scott boras.  i will always thank him for his time here, but they got some assets for him.  mize too.  thanks for your service.  turn that asset into future assets.

smart business.

and i would not be surprised if the tigers continue to contend this year, even without mize and skubal.

The trade is pretty much Mayfield for Mize. Wolf and Workman are just there for some alliteration

Don’t forget about balancing out the syllables, too.

Now that the dust has settled, I’m pretty satisfied overall with the deadline.  I reeeeallly wanted to get Sirota, but Hope has a lot of upside too, and his lefty splits make me not as concerned about not getting a RH outfielder.  Hopefully they give Hope every chance to make the team next spring.

Im indifferent on Ryan, but he clearly has the stuff to excel.  I’m just not wild about his health history.  So I’ll expect the worst and pray for the best.

Mayfield seems like a steal for a rental of Mize, who might not even give them the full 2 months healthy.

Im pretty hyped about the returns we got for Jake Rogers and Jahmai Jones.  Those guys should’ve gotten us nothing of value—but we got some solid upside arms to give us a bit of system depth.

I don’t mind keeping Gleyber.  He definitely helps the offense be productive overall—so if there wasn’t a good return being offered, then keep him.  I wouldn’t even hate the idea of signing him for another year.

We freed up some 40 man spots for Jobe and  Wenceel get activated off the 60-day so we won’t have to cut anyone for those moves and can hang onto our other pieces for now.

Would like to see Outman get DFAd and bring up Max Anderson to get another righty in the lineup occasionally.

Overall, I think we still have a shot at the playoffs.  Cleveland largely added a bunch of junk except Griffin.  White Sox didn’t wow me with any moves either.  Everything is still right in front of us—just need the veterans on the pitching staff to put up or shut up.

I think I can understand both trades that were made and not be upset with the players brought back.  It sucks to see Skubal go, but such is the state of things.  One thing that I heard that sticks in my mind is are we getting to a point closer than we think where the name of Skubal is going to have more value than the performance of Skubal?

I am disappointed that they couldn’t move Torres.  I suspect they tried and there just wasn’t a market?  Or perhaps there was too much requested for a return?  Something might leak about it, but who knows if it will be true.

I am disappointed that they couldn’t address the bullpen.  A better bullpen would have made up for the loss in the rotation a bit, but probably not enough to offset the loss of Skubal and Mize.  I suppose the market for controllable RP was too much.

Were any decent bullpen arms available? I mean, were any traded?

It would not shock me if he has peaked and will start to fall back to Earth a bit.  I don’t see his leg kick mechanics aging well.  Plus in LA, he isn’t going to be THE guy, and he always seemed to feed off of that with us…so I can see him having some difficulty adjusting to just being “another member of the rotation” for LA.  They aren’t going to embrace him like they do with Ohtani.
