chasfh Posted June 27 Posted June 27 (edited) Can you imagine how old timey players and fans would react to images of today's players hugging each other after home runs and the like? They might well swear off the game for good at that point. Edited June 27 by chasfh Quote
IdahoBert Posted June 27 Posted June 27 Wow… This game is pretty tense. I may need to take a pause and rewatch something hopeful and nourishing like the original Death Race 2000, all the while trying to forget how David Carradine died in real life… Quote

monkeytargets39 Posted June 27 Posted June 27 Good example of why keeping Skubal to go for it isn’t worth it. We don’t have a bullpen that holds leads. Unless Skubal is giving us 8/9 innings…. Quote
chasfh Posted June 27 Posted June 27 From 3-and-0 to strikeout to end the game. I'm convinced. Pull the plug on Jahmai Jones as well. Quote
tiger2022 Posted June 27 Posted June 27 They may have lost but Hinch is satisfied. He got Jones in the game as a pinch hitter, and he got to pull Colt Keith AND Kerry Carpenter. Thankful the Tigers have the smartest manager in the game. Quote
chasfh Posted June 27 Posted June 27 I mean, come on, something like 11-30 in games decided by two runs or fewer can't be 100% because of the bullpen. But it can't be 0%, either. If we were simply .500 in those games, we'd be leading the division by at least two games. This can be a good team, as constructed. They have shown as much. As Lee showed us in another thread, by some measures, we are still the best in the division. Something is simply broken, and they simply in a bad stretch where they are blowing too many games. Fans can blame Hinch and say it's all on him, and I don't know that I agree, but I can't really argue against that at this point. We do know he took a team that was supposed to do nothing and, between August 2024 and August 2025, led them to dramatically overachieve. And we know has has drastically underachieved with a close facsimile of the same team ever since. The team has been hurt and missing key pieces, and they still are, and that definitely has something to do with the losing this year. But that does not explain random problems like eighth inning Vest. I don't think anything can explain eighth inning Vest. Otherwise there would be a fix for that. Players simply don't have some mechanical flaw that leads them to fail only in the eighth inning while they absolutely crush it in the seventh and ninth innings. It makes no sense. Yet, it's happening. There it is. I don't believe that firing Harris, firing Hinch, trading or releasing practically everyone on the team, selling the franchise, moving the team to Charlotte—I don't see how any of that is going to help anything, either now or long term. But I am at a loss as to how to respond to any of these. They're all on the table, I guess. (Well, probably not the Charlotte thing.) So anyone who says those are the things that have to happen, that's just as valid as me saying hang on, see the plan through, it's going to get better once the breaks come our way. Speaking only for me, maybe it would be best for my own state of mind to just disengage from the day to day of this team, seeing as how nothing is moving us forward and it really does look like we are headed for a sell-off, and just wait to see what happens then. Harris is on the spot, and he does not have much needle space to thread to get it just right. 1 Quote
Tiger337 Posted June 27 Posted June 27 Another game blown by the bullpen. The offensive is bad, but this team is built around pitching and the bullpen has not gotten it done this year. Quote

That was kind of baked into the equation as the season started. Or at least no one expected the offense to carry the brunt of the load. What wasn't baked in was the bullpen blowing 8 games when leading after 7 innings not even halfway through the season. Last year they blew 8 such games the entire year. Add in the injuries and the large imbalance between expected runs scored and actual runs scored and you end up with this: a decent team with a lousy record. It happens. Look at the Braves last year for one. 1 Quote

It seems “the bridge too far” just collapsed. Fitting that it was Issac Paredas who lit 🔥 the fuse. Bummer. Edited June 27 by SoCalTiger Quote

The results have been frustrating this year, but I am actually encouraged by the play of several young players and I think they are not as bad as their record. I am even feeling less bad about losing Skubal after seeing Melton and Montero emerge as potential mid rotation starters if not better. Quote
tiger2022 Posted June 27 Posted June 27 Most people saw a bullpen blowing yet another game, but I see the positives...at least Carpenter and Keith didn't get the opportunities to embarrass themselves against left handed pitchers. Quote
monkeytargets39 Posted June 27 Posted June 27 (edited) What’s frustrating beyond just the poor performances of some players, is the lack of any apparent accountability. Jones hasn’t performed at all this year? Keep PHing him. Torkelson striking out 33% of the time? Hitting .207? Play every day. McKinstry hitting sub .200 and it’s nearly July? Play almost every day. Flaherty pitching terrible most of the year? Yeah keep running him out there every 5th day even though he can’t get through the 4th inning. Verlander gets shelled in his one start and in his rehab outing—yeah let’s boot Keider Montero from the rotation in favor of JV. Vest has a 6 era and we are almost to July? Keep giving him all the leverage situations. Wenceel and Vierling not hitting and playing terrible defense? Keep playing them every day instead of making a move. No one loses their roster spot or their regularly scheduled playing time due to performance—it’s only ever because of injuries. And no one seems to ever earn more playing time because they’re doing well. Montero is the first guy we kick out of the rotation even though he’s been fantastic. Malgeri gets called up, is hitting .333 and gets to sit for the last two games. Carpenter hits a grand slam? Pull him for Jones again. I get believing in your guys and all, but how much leeway are we gonna give some of these players before we try something else. Even if it’s not a bunch of roster moves—try having the guys who are hitting under .200 bunt for hits or to advance runners. Shake up the batting order. Give some guys who have pitched well the last month some bigger bullpen roles. Try hit and run, try stealing more bases, try setting a lineup and sticking with it. Anything. We are a 95-loss team over the last 162. Make some tough decisions. and Hinch just REFUSES to make any public statements calling out his guys performances or acknowledging the need for changes.
