94 pitches allowing no runs, with two hits and striking out nine for Flaherty… What is Hinch going to do?

Whenever I ponder a situation like this, I wonder “what would Brad Ausmus do?“ Then I’d do something different.

Why didn’t Keith challenge that pitch that was called a ball this entire at bat? Are the Tigers out of challenges already? Did I miss this?

Tigers have not made a challenge, let alone a bad one. the answer to your first question is almost certainly lack of comfort with challenging calls.

Brad Ausmus would’ve either left Flaherty in or brought in Will Vest to demonstrate to the guy that he had faith in him. Hinch did neither.

I remember games where it was so obvious a guy was cooked and Brad didn’t take him out that children that had never been to a baseball game before and were soccer goalies knew that the pitcher was cooked.

we are probably safe from Will today - it will be up to Kenley to do any dirty deeds to be done.

If Keith isn’t going to OPS at least .750, he’s useless

It got to be 3b or nothing for Keith. This is maybe the thing about Hinch that I least like among the things about him I like - he sees players too much as interchangeable cogs, with insufficient recognition that because one guy can do something, another guy maybe can't. Anybody with eyes knows that Keith is low confidence glove. He needs to be left alone to work at one position. But not in AJ's world. Everybody has to play interchangeable pieces. All players are not the same.

If Tork needs a day off, use some one who DOES have talent for moving around - like McKinstry, who I'm sure can play a better 1b in his sleep than Colt ever will.

Tigers bullpen....sigh. I say start the bullpen. That way we would know how many runs we need and we would have more time to catch up. This is 19 games our bullpen couldn't hold a lead. 19 games!!

Making McGonigle a utility player is gonna ruin the kids confidence. Leave him at one spot and allow him to learn. Hinch wants a team full of utility players. SMH...

we've got too many guys are are not very good - nothing is going to change unless they make a trade ( and what chance is there they are buyers at this point?) or try some different guys from the minors, because Holton, Finnegan and Vest will not get you to 600 ball for any extended run.

Meanwhile they sent down De Jesus, who is allowing fewer men to reach base than Vest or Holton. How much do they really want to win?

And they moved Montero to the pen. Valdez and Flaherty are really inconsistent and Montero has been about as consistent as any SP on this staff. Is it because of the salary of these guys?

I think it's because Montero doesn't fit their image of what kind of secondaries a good starter needs to have. But maybe Montero is exactly the profile of a guy helped by a major change in the game wrought by ABS so they need to adjust their thinking, or maybe they are right and he's headed for huge regression, but even if he is, why not ride it as long as you can? What's the downside? Would you really rather be right than win?

After yesterday, i've seen enough of Valdez. No wonder nobody wanted him.

The season is a wash at this point.  If Gleyber comes back healthy, trade him.  Play Lee at 2B, McGonigle at SS, and Keith at 3B every day.  If Javy comes back healthy, drop Jahmai and play Javy in CF every day.  If Keith can’t become a serviceable 3B with a full half-season of reps there, then he deserves to be a platoon DH.
