It might’ve just been a positioning thing. I don’t feel like rewinding to check. Watched the replay of the AB. Just a terrible play. One of few times I've seen McK totally screw-up. He was actually playing a shift toward right, he was right behind 2B, maybe a bit deep for DP depth but he just didn't break for the bag. Edited July 18 by gehringer_2 Quote

I noticed that too, watching the condensed game this morning because I fell asleep in the sixth inning last night. The only thing I can imagine is that McKinstry thought it was two outs and Lee was going right to first with the throw. Quote
chasfh Posted July 18 Posted July 18 Hot take: Hao Yu-lee has been a serviceable replacement at second, but as soon as Torres comes back, Lee goes back to Toledo so he can continue to get regular trigger time. And that’s fine, Hao can still use time in Toledo. Quote

I was thinking Valencia would stay and be the “lefty-killer”, much as Jahmai was supposed to be, since he doesn’t have a real future with the team. But Lee does, so playing everyday in Toledo would be better for him, and for us, than his playing once or twice a week in Detroit. Quote

Hart Posted July 18 Posted July 18 Melton has to be one of the most composed pitchers in baseball under stress. Angels had plenty of chances to bury the Tigers early and he just never cracked. Seems to be a theme with him. Of course, it helps to have a great arsenal you can throw for strikes, Quote

I think Lee would be fairly likely to split time at 2nd and 3rd playing at least 5 times/wk with Torres DHing 2-3 times/wk. i see Malgeri going down before Lee. They have Outman, Vierling, McKinstry, Greene, and Carpenter who can play OF. Lee can play some 3rd. McGonigle and McKinstry SS. Lee’s bat and glove are proving to be considerably more valuable than Malgeri, or Valencia. 1 Quote

Lee can be our RH DH or PH when Torres gets back. Full time 2nd base next season. Gleyber for a prospect at the deadline. Quote

Any other starting catcher besides Dingler, and I’d agree. However, I think any backup to Dillon might only get about 35 starts. You can carry Valencia for that, and use him elsewhere as you suggest. Pretty sure that Rogers will be gone—even if he only makes $3-4M, they will likely deploy those funds elsewhere. Quote

Valencia shouldn’t catch 10 games IMO. i believe they’d go with someone like Nido instead of Valencia as the 2nd catcher. A strong defender over offense. 1 Quote

If there is room to carry Valencia as the 3rd catcher... he may have a place on the roster. But I'm with 4hz... I don't think Valencia wins any battle for backup catcher. Yes, Rogers will most likely be gone next year. But... in 2027 Spring Training... Valencia will NOT be the only catcher in camp vying to be backup catcher. There will be several. Do you believe Valencia will win a battle to be the #2 catcher based almost solely on his bat? I don't think so. As 3rd catcher/ 1B/ DH/ PH'er maybe... But he doesn't appear to be much of a catcher and I don't believe the Org will rely on a Bat First/Not Much of a Catcher to be Dingler's primary backup. Just my 2 cents. Quote

lordstanley Posted July 18 Posted July 18 Dan Dickerson and Bobby Scales spent quite a bit of time talking after last night's game that they feel fielding analytics doesn't do an adequate job of measuring one's scooping ability and that Tork has worked very hard at that aspect of the game. 1 Quote

They were about the same distance from the bag when he lands and he was starting on his back foot. He made the right play by taking the highest percentage out. Tork to my eyes anyway is elite when it comes to scooping the ball. Probably the only elite thing he does that keeps us from moving on. 2 Quote

The runner has a full head of steam, and Mac needs to stop and reverse course to the bag. Maybe he gets him, but I'm not sure he does. I think he made the right decision to throw to 1st. Quote
gehringer_2 Posted July 18 Posted July 18 (edited) I think he could have gotten him at third too, but I'd guess a key is that is that he had to look away from the runner to field the ball, so as he came down and turned the fastest decision is go straight to the throwing position instead of trying to pick up the runner, maybe see that was too late for 3rd and get nobody. I think you're dead on here. Not being able to see the runners while making the snag is likely why he never hesitated in going to 1st. Quote
