They think he's a good defender and that the metrics are not working for him. They may a point. I have never felt too confident in the evaluation of first base defense. If it's not working, then it kills his WAR too. He’s really good at certain things, but not at some others. Eye test seems to suggest he’s very good at picking low throws, but doesn’t seem to have a lot of range Quote

If it's not working, then it kills his WAR too. I think it's true he's not a great ground ball fielder - he knocks down more than he catches clean, and his range is meh. But he's an intelligent player in terms of always making the right play, and he never throws the ball away going either to the pitcher or to 2nd, and of course, he definitely has good skill digging throws. Keith Hernandez would absolutely lower the BA of left hand hitters against the Tigers, but OTOH, Tork is a player you can put out there and overall he does enough around the margins to make up for some his weaknesses, and I imagine that is a bit of an outlier combination for the models. Constantly changing line-ups is not so much a deliberate strategy as it is a way to deal with a sub-par roster 1 Quote

That's how we're gonna remember it. Just like we remember Jack Morris's nearly flawless no-hitter in 1984. You know, the one where he walked 6, got lucky on two great defensive plays and actually had to pitch out of a bases loaded jam at one point? That don't matter none now. Does he have any chance of getting in the Cy Young conversation? Not that I would expect him to win, but could he get votes, even with his late start. Quote
