mtutiger Posted July 5 Posted July 5 (edited) Click to read through the entire thread... But man, it says a lot about how far the Times has fallen as an organization. At the very minimum, they need to bring back an actual public editor to really stress test the pieces going out the door. Otherwise I don't understand how they retain any credibility Edited July 5 by mtutiger 1 Quote
RatkoVarda Posted July 6 Posted July 6 (edited) Patrick Healy is a VERY SERIOUS REPORTER, most well known for writing 1,000 words about how annoying Hillary Clinton's laugh was, which lead to 3 NYT promotions. Edited July 6 by RatkoVarda Quote
Tigerbomb13 Posted July 6 Posted July 6 They would be better off hiring the Pitchbot as their editor 2 Quote
mtutiger Posted July 7 Posted July 7 I don't know what to say.... I don't know why anyone would give money to the Times or Athletic until they fix their editorial issues. Quote
Motown Bombers Posted July 7 Posted July 7 It’s weird how they only publish hacked materials if it affects a Democrat. If Watergate happened today, the media would report on what the burglars stole and not the burglary itself. Quote
RatkoVarda Posted July 7 Posted July 7 just coming here to post the same thing. so the NYT decided that Hillary's emails on risotto cooking tips just HAD to be published - but not Vance's oppo on Trump and they continue to describe this nazi as an "academic" when clearly he is not Quote
CMRivdogs Posted July 9 Posted July 9 I don't where to put this but MAGA is apparently losing it over the producer of the current Superman movie calling his character an immigrant, https://variety.com/2025/film/news/james-gunn-superman-immigrant-backlash-response-1236449068/ Hey MAGAMorons, this is a fictional character from a distant planet. What else do you call him? Did he clear customs. Is he here legally? Who cares...It's a movie, it's supposed to be entertaining, Quote

RatkoVarda Posted July 9 Posted July 9 Audio released of unhinged lunatic threating to bomb Russia and China plunging world into a nuclear winter killing billions. Same unhinged lunatic threatens to invade DC and NY. but NYT wants you to know that Biden's team was annoyed reporter kept calling Biden and they took steps to stop it we are both literally and figuratively doomed and corp media cannot be bothered to report on that Quote
Tigerbomb13 Posted July 9 Posted July 9 One thing Trump got right was referring to them as the “failing New York Times” Quote
romad1 Posted July 22 Posted July 22 In retrospect the "Colbert was losing money" stuff sounds a lot like the PE arguments (after the pump and dump tricks) that Toys R Us was doomed to online competitors. Meanwhile that business is going strong in Canada. Quote

chasfh Posted July 24 Posted July 24 This strikes me as a low-key brilliant move since they obviously don’t want to release anything and now they can blame the courts which they knew would block them from doing so. Quote
RatkoVarda Posted July 24 Posted July 24 in their motion asking the court to unseal the docs, the DOJ wrote that the court did not have the authority to unseal the docs Quote
Edman85 Posted Monday at 02:00 PM Posted Monday at 02:00 PM Glenn Kessler leaving Wapo might be its death knell. Quote
LaceyLou Posted Monday at 02:05 PM Posted Monday at 02:05 PM It would be great if a group of people could get together and buy Wapo from Bezos... I have a bad feeling that's no longer an option. Quote
Edman85 Posted Monday at 02:11 PM Posted Monday at 02:11 PM Too late. My annual subscription runs through December. I don't see myself renewing, nor do I see it being worthwhile to at that point. The list of departures is pretty amazing. Quote

I have a bad feeling that's no longer an option. He doesn't need the money and it's worth to Bezos is far beyond what someone would be willing to pay. The hope is, once Trump is gone, it's use will drop to nothing. Rather it's restored or just curls up and dies at that point is probably the real question. Quote

I have a bad feeling that's no longer an option. Without the Post, there is nothing for Bezos to offer Trump except cash. Trump loves cash, but he also wants normal media to fall in line like right wing media. Bezos can use that as the bait to get the power and government contracts he wants. It is a two-way grift. Quote
LaceyLou Posted Monday at 02:25 PM Posted Monday at 02:25 PM Unfortunately I know you're both right. Sigh... While I know that my not using Amazon or shopping at Whole Foods isn't hurting Bezos, at least I feel a bit better about my habits. Quote
gehringer_2 Posted Monday at 02:49 PM Posted Monday at 02:49 PM (edited) I'm somewhat of two minds about how to run a newspaper in the US today. As much as every voice in advocacy and help 'the cause', I can see the virtue in trying to move a paper like WaPo away from being known for it's editorial page positions back to more of a straight news focus -because that is the only way to ever recover credibility as a news source in such a political charged environment. The thing is it is not at all clear if that is any part of what Bezos is trying to do or not. Frankly it seems at this point in his life he's no longer particularly serious about anything.
