Also, Reese Olson and Jackson Jobe, both of whom we'd hoped to get positive contributions from this year. Olson is gone for good this year; Jobe might be back in August, or might not, and will be on training wheels if/when he does come back. Torres has been out, and now Carpenter. I'll mention Verlander because some fans were really counting on him to be his old self this year, although I myself and a lot of other fans never did expect much from him. -
Paul Krugman posts to a substack since he's left this gig at the NYT, and he's been writing about the comparison between Europe and the US recently, and that's a big part of his point. The US looks richer but it's really just in the bias of the accounting system. Labor productivity the EU is just as good, but Europe always looks like it's lagging because Euros have just decided to work less per capita - they actually value quality of life so they take time off to live it. Same applies to the fact that public goods are far better in Europe than in the US (healthcare, transportation etc), and finally, social equity is much better in Europe than the US which is a driver of social unhappiness in the US. And the proof is in the immigration figures. People came to the US from Western Europe all through the Post WWII era. Few do now. Euros are only 10% of the immigrant population today and many of them are H1Bs recruited by US industry.

When is enough enough in regards to uniforms?
chasfh replied to Zakk_Wylde's topic in Detroit Tigers
As for the Tigers' home jersey situation, I dislike that the addition of the orange tops and moving the City Connects to Mondays means more games at home during which they are not in the traditional home whites. If there's any lemonade for me here, I do dislike the oranges less than the City Connects, so at least they're wearing the City Connects on the day of the week the Tigers will be playing fewer home games on. -

When I see both teams in colored jerseys, my gut reaction is that I put on the wrong game. -
Paying attention is exactly the point. You're reading a governing trend from the noisiest data points: aldermanic social media posts, a primary race in a single Illinois district, candidates distancing themselves from AIPAC. That's real political pressure, and I don't dismiss it. But political pressure from a vocal constituency is not the same as ideological capture of a governing party. The Democratic mainstream haven't abandoned Israel, but while they have complicated their relationship with the current Israeli government, that's not the same thing, and besides, it's what Israeli opposition figures and mass protest movements have done as well. The distinction that actually matters is the one between policy-driven anti-Israel sentiment (even when it's overwrought, and even when it edges into troubling territory) and the kind of ethno-nationalist, eliminationist antisemitism that has historically seized control of parties and governments, and is doing so again on the right in real time. The former is a problem that bears close watching. The latter is the thing that has historically gotten people killed. Conflating them because they share some surface rhetoric muddles, not sharpens, the analysis, and lets the genuinely dangerous version off the hook by treating it as merely one data point along a bipartisan spectrum.

I have nightmares about the Orioles a couple years ago who everyone thought were the up and coming team and then just crashed back to futility after only one and a half good seasons. -

Mize's last two injuries boggle the mind. How can an athlete trained for doing a couple of hours at maximum full body exertion hurt himself twice doing basically nothing? I keep hearing that training for injury prevention is now a sub-field within athletic training - pushed early on by guys like Tom Brady. I wonder if the Tigers are hip to that or not? -

And I think I am stealing this from another poster - so whomever you are I give you credit, but if you're keeping Jahmai Jones on this team only because he's out of options, then you've got serious roster problems. Go ahead and cut him. There's a very good chance he's clearing waivers - and if he doesn't you've got Ben Malgeri, Max Clark and Corey Julks, who can do what he does and maybe better - and you probably have 2 more after them. And come on. I know they just signed DeJong, but I will take an ice cold Paul DeJong over Zack Short any day of the week. What the hell happened to Sweeney, is he still hurt or did he get hurt again? Waste of a roster spot. How many SS do they have in their top 20 prospects - 5, 6 ? Yet no real SS options other than McGonigle right now. It's such a mess. -

Vest hurt and Janson blowing 3 saves in 12 outings. What the heck are they going to do with Flaherty? You can't put him in the BP - well maybe they could try, he usually does get through one inning before he breaks down. -
saw a comment by Fed governor Goolsby(sp?). He said the key to him was the uptick in services costs. He takes that as the marker that what is going on is not just tar or tariffs. If you look at it purely as a matter of system dynamics, if you have a higher order system approaching your desired control point, the fastest way to get there is to push the system to just a little bit of overshoot and then have it settle back to the target. The Fed took their foot off the brake before we ever reached 2%, so now we probably can't get there until they raise rates again or maybe do some more quantitative tightening, which the big banks push back against (though Warsh has said he wants to)

Because August 2024 - July 2025 was some sort of strange fever dream and the team has never really been all that good outside of that stretch, which was just enough to get them to the playoffs a couple of times, but not into true contention. Lucky to be in a weak division. Sure, the injuries (Meadows, Beaz, Torres, Skubal, Mize, Vest, Carpenter) have been to a level that can be called ridiculous, but even when they had those guys they weren't all that good, except for Skubal and MIze. I've given up on Torkelson now and I have had enough of Carpenter getting hurt every single year. Mize gets hurt every year too. They have a headcase for a second starter that they are vastly overpaying because Harris and Chris I were on some sort of sugar high when they signed him. Third starter is garbage. Verlander probably can't pitch when it's under 80 degrees. Meadows has missed too much time for injuries, but at least it was on a hustle play. McKinstry turned back into a pumpkin. The Manager tinkers too much. Let Colt Keith hit against lefties, for **** sake. I mean the guys you are platooning for him aren't hitting lefties any better than he does, so let him learn. He's one of 4 decent hitters on this squad. You need to play him every single day until he proves he's not. They have somewhat useless players on this team like Jones and Short. I mean, honestly, if Zack Short is on your team - then you suck. Period. And this team sucks. And baseball reference, can you please have any other ad but that Eric Byrnes ad. Over and Over and Over. Even with the volume down it's annoyng. -

Melton and Mize are injured. Valdez is having his usual meltdown games at the wrong time. Flaherty can't get the ball over the plate. I don't know why. They didn't win the reliever lottery this year. Their defense is bad and the the injuries to Baez and Meadows have made it worse. -
Here comes the inflation.

My niece graduates from law school this weekend. That means I'm watching game 6 in a hotel. My girlfriend is taking bets with other family members on us getting kicked out when I yell at the TV. -

Agree about Austin and Nashville. I think London is off the table for now. They are trying to start that NBA Europe league and putting an NBA team in London would canalize that. If that league fails then London is back on the table. I think once they lock down the two expansion teams they will turn their attention to getting the Pelicans out of New Orleans. Mexico City has to be the first choice. -
I agree it wasn't a big deal. It's not like it was the Obama family or something.

i dont think the league would let him move to austin or nashville. nashville will likely end up being the new home of the memphis grizzlies and i dont think austin can actually support a team. san antonio would howl about that. four teams in texas? vegas and seattle are the two areas that need teams and theyre slated for expansion cities. the next places after that might be overseas. mexico city or london. -
I don’t know the details of Virginia Giufree’s death, just the description of it as “taking her own life”. It seemed to occur while she was still active in her campaign to out the most powerful men in the world as principals in an international sex trafficking ring, and in public at least, she seemed energized to be doing so.
