I have a name for people who cover up affairs simply because they are “soldiers”. I won’t share it here because asterisks are boring. service doesn’t absolve being a jackass.5 points

There are many ways to serve. The military is but just one of them. You can organize food drives. You can deliver food. You can volunteer in your church for functions. You can coach. You can be involved in other youth activities. You can visit nursing homes. Even some jobs that pay remedial wages but are tremendously impactful I would count as ways of serving, like those in schools or social work. I won’t obviously criticize members of the military but I’m not going to kiss their ass either just because of that service. Same with cops and firefighters. I have known to many who are bad people to just automatically grant that to them. They have to earn it like everyone else.4 points

I hear ya. I have almost completely stopped talking politics with people IRL, especially strangers, and even with my family. There's one guy I talk with where it comes up and we're of the same mind, but I get weary even then of my own doom-spiraling, and I usually end up telling him, OK, that's enough of that. Probably because he's still pretending things are completely normal and the mid-terms will offer Trump a rebuke in a free and fair election. We'll see, but if it doesn't, I don't think it will because the voters will gladly put them right back in, let's put it that way. This area is basically my only outlet, because I get to articulate my thoughts far more precisely than I can otherwise.3 points

My wife was once told by the General Manager of a major station "A woman will never work morning drive on my station". Had a car dealer tell her to come back with your husband. (she was planning on paying cash) Been passed over for several promotions because of the "good ole boys" club. F em all. Especially since we have a president who basically got where he is because of a daddy who bailed him out several times. Trump is the poster boy for DEI2 points

About a dozen years ago I was helping to man a booth at the Detroit Auto Show. TACOM had a booth highlighting some of their vehicles. PBS shared a table promoting the upcoming Ken Burns documentary on Viet NamThey were offering veterans a chance to share their experience, not only in Viet Nam but in other conflicts as well. We were told by TACOM to refrain from using the phrase "Thank you for your service" when talking with them. The reasoning was some vets find the phrase trite and impersonal, a bit like "have a good day". We were urged to come up with different ways to acknowledge their contribution. That's stuck with me.2 points

Re: the women pilots and Tuskegee Airmen what makes it worse is the fact that its an interpretation of the will of the King that the Air Force education people are doing. "He must not want us talking about the contributions of marginalized communities that would otherwise be interpreted as DEI." Those who don't play along will be reported.2 points

There are people I choose not to engage with for this reason-even when it's a topic I'm interested in. I guess in my old age I've learned to choose my battles more wisely, and to only work on what I know I have the power to change. FWIW, this is true not only here, but IRL and on other platforms as well.2 points

I also don't respect when anyone vaingloriously guilts people into thanking them for their service and/or shutting the hell up about whatever by highlighting sacrifices they say they endured so other people don't have to do it. There's a passage in Matthew about this very thing, which you'll hear in Ash Wednesday services: "When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show others they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full." Ex-mils who guilt others about their own stint are receiving their reward in full whenever they do that.2 points

When I worked in radio, I had 3 different occasions where I lived at the radio station for a few days because of weather. Pretty much the whole airstaff (the ones who didn't have kids) just stayed at the station. Watched videotapes, played cards, played other games --------- and there MAY have been drinking involved. Ssssshhh, don't tell the FCC.2 points

If you get a chance watch The Six Triple Eight. It's about Lt Col Charity Adams, the first African American woman to command overseas during WWII. The mission involved leading the 6888 Central Postal Directory in England during WWII. They renamed Ft Lee after her and Gen Arthur Gregg, who was instrumental in desegregating the army. Including Ft Lee2 points

I really don't consider Episcopalian's to be evangelistic. Trump's church as a kid was Presbyterian. Norman Vincent Peale, one of the early televangelists which was a Reformed church that broke away from the Presbyterians. He was one of the early Prosperity Gospel ministers. I see him and other MAGA's going in that direction. But yes, it will be Evangelical but that's a broad stroke. If that happens it will kill another plank of the Constitution. Freedom to worship where you damn please. That was another one of those reasons the Colonies broke from England.2 points

I have to say that the Tuskegee Airman thing really is bothering me. For schmucks who want to rename all the Army bases in the South after the Confederate losers to say its all about legacy and heritage. What the US Air Force owes to the Tuskegee Airmen and what the African American community owe to those men is enormous. This is just awful. A blight on our national honor if this is let to stand.2 points

True. I'm old enough that I grew up with women from the "good old days" when they had to stay in abusive marriages, couldn't get a credit card or a mortgage, and good luck if you become a widow because you were encouraged to not get an education or if you did, to not ever be able to make more than your husband. And that's just the tip of the iceberg. I think you and I grew up up seeing, hearing and even experiencing some of the same things that we'd hoped we wouldn't see again. 😞1 point

It's just the whole "Walter Sobchak" routine that some vets or active duty do that's grating for me... Where they fall back on their service to short circuit any discussion that they don't like or doesn't comport to their views. Most aren't like this... a lot of vets that I know in my life are 3D people that don't have to center everything around their service. I've even seen cases where I've known people a long period of time before service even comes up. (My last neighbor before moving is a good example)1 point

No doubt. So when Harris says a particular player fits their profile, I’m thinking that includes a salary window as well as their other criteria.1 point

Regarding the potential tariffs against Colombia, one thing Trump has never understood (or maybe just doesn't care about) is how much of our power in the world comes from being a trusted, reliable partner. It's soft power, but it has worked to our benefit as a country since the end of WWII Actions like this cede ground... And when ground is ceded, a vacuum is created. And vacuum's end up being filled by others (ie. China)1 point

I personally would be happy with amnesty for non criminal illegal aliens. After rooting out the over a million illegals who have deportation status. Maybe it will happen? Definitely would create a ton of republican voters if Trump did it.1 point

That is what I guessed. Vets tend to prefer Republicans which I think has more to do with demographics than results. My father, in his later years, also did not hold anything against people who avoided the draft. He was not afraid to be critical of fellow veterans who turned out to be jackasses though. He didn't give a crap about politics. He thought it was stupid. He loved to play devils advocate with people from both parties.1 point

26 JANUARY 1775, LONDON: The House of Commons rejects by a heavy margin a petition from Massachusetts’s agents (Benjamin Franklin, Arthur Lee and William Bollan) to present the First Continental Congress’s petition to the privy council. Among those who vote against the petition is the backbench MP Lord George Germain. During the debate Germain says he would be happy to hear petitions from America, “but if they resisted for what they call their rights, he would treat them with Roman severity.” https://bsky.app/profile/revwar250.bsky.social/post/3lgnrsgood62p1 point

First off, as I've said before I want these people to be paid fair market, livable wages. If you're worried about undocumented people affecting the cost of goods and services were they to be paid more, a living wage, are you saying you don't want any American citizens who take these jobs to be paid livable wages either? Furthermore, we already have an estimated labor shortage of 1.7 million workers. So if we deport an additional, estimated, 8.3 million undocumented workers on top of that we're at an estimated nearly 10 million worker shortage. How do we make up that deficit because there aren't enough American workers to make it up right now or seemingly in the future. So you don't want people to be paid at livable wages because of cost concerns, and you don't want undocumented people doing these jobs either at any wage because they came here illegally. So who exactly is going to fill these jobs? Someone has to, the need for them isn't just going to disappear. Do you want and/or expect American citizens to work below market value pay and do these jobs?1 point

Tampa comes here February 8th. If a Wings player doesn't go after Kucherov in the first period of the game, then the Wings are weak. He needs to answer. I don't care if Ras is really hurt seriously or not. Can't ever let a guy do you like that. Don't care if there is a suspension, you MUST send a message that kind of garbage won't be tolerated. I'm still pissed about it. Obviously.1 point

Well, we can't have African Americans and/or women aware of any of the contributions they've made to this country, now can we? In recent years, I finally learned about the AA women who worked with (and played a big role) in NASA, and women who made contributions in the field of astronomy. I think there's a small but loud group of people who don't want certain people to have role models.1 point
