  1. Are we seriously still debating the value of pitchers because they don't pitch every game? Pitchers don't have to play every game like position players have to because a pitcher has five times the impact on winning or losing a game as a position player does. That's why a pitcher can be just as valuable starting 30 games in a season as a position player is starting 150 games. Top-of-the-line pitchers are worth every penny that top-of-the-line position players are. I would like to sign Skubal to a number of years, although preferably not ten, and if it takes $40 million a year to do that, it's worth it. I mean, it's worth it just for the idea that if Skubal commits to Detroit long-term, that's going to signal to the rest of the market that Detroit is committing to winning, and that's going to make us a lot more attractive a destination than we are now.

  5. I've always been a big fan of Bregman, but I don't see them chasing him this year either with Torres back and McGonigle right around the corner.

  6. Aside from the fact that 'the Bible' is a book, not a sentient entity and thus not capable of 'smartness', the statement "Atheism is a Religion" is foolishness. An atheist may believe any number of things are true that may or may not be true, and he may hold some of those beliefs in dogmatic fashion, but he does not believe it is true that God exists, so whatever you call his belief system, it is by definition not religion. And English is certainly a rich enough language that that kind of inarticulateness is unnecessary. cf: re·li·gion: /rəˈlij(ə)n/ noun the belief in and worship of a superhuman power or powers, especially a God or gods.

  7. What always makes be laugh about creationists is that however creation came into being, if someone who was there and understood it had actually tried to explain it to a bunch of bronze age nomads, in the end they probably couldn't have done all that much better than Genesis. I mean, have these people ever given serious consideration to what would have happened if Moses had come down from Sinai with Quantum Theory and General Relativity on the tablets? It's just a complete lack of understanding of both the context and purpose of a creation narrative.

  8. My thinking was not that McGonigle couldn't play shortstop, but that he potentially gives them a huge boost offensively to their infield while they continue to mix and match with Keith/McKinstry/Vierling/Baez. That would give them more infield offense and depth than last year and allow them to concentrate on pitching. However, I'd rather have Bregman and I would not worry about any of those guys getting blocked.

  9. With how doom and gloom it's been around here (and yes, how mid they have been playing), it's easy to miss that they are only 2 games out of the 1-seed with a tiebreaker in hand over the 1-seed. To be clear, I'm not saying that the Lions are going to be the 1-seed. But it's not as if anybody is lighting the world on fire in the NFC right now. Every time you think there is a clear front runner, they drop a game they shouldn't. If the defense returns to how they played early in the season and the offense can score 24 points per game, they'll likely beat the Cowboys, Steelers, and Vikings. Rams would likely be a one-possession game, one way or the other. You beat the Bears by 30 last time you saw them. It hasn't been pretty, but they've done enough so far to be on the graphic. From December on, it's just about who is going to get hot. But to your point about talent, if you asked 14 NFC teams right now whether they'd rather play the Lions or Bears in a must-win game this Sunday, I bet you get 14 "Bears" without much thought. As you said, this team is one of the most talented in the NFL, it's just not clicking right this second. Feels like they need to open a can of whoop ass against the Cowboys to right the ship.

  10. I’m not ready to start taking about next season yet. They are in a bad spot right now but the NFL is weird. Things can change quickly especially when you have a talented roster. If they can shore up a few weak links and get a bit healthier, they will make the playoffs. This year things are more wide open than ever in the NFC and anyone in the tourney will have a great chance to get to the Super Bowl.

  12. This. Solutions...? Can Ratledge handle Center? He struggled this year because it was new to him. So he either figures it out and we have our Center for 2026... or this needs to be one of our top priorities. Everything O flows from this position right here. If he still is struggling to understand C next year... Has Kinsgsley Eguakon been coached up to where he is an actual viable candidate? If not... priority FA signing? Top two rounds draft pick? The guards fall out from there... Frazier and Mahogany need health though... and they need to be at the level needed by the Lions to make our O-Line run correctly... Maybe not a TOP FA priority... but can we find a decent starting level Guard to provide competition or depth? Speaking of which... Is Manu going to be ready to properly back up Decker? He has to get good enough to be able to take over ecker's starting spot... which at least makes him a top backup at LT and he just has to wait until Decker hands over the keys... But until then... Is that our answer to backup LT? If not, what then...? Those are a lot of key questions about our O-Line... As for our D-Line... I feel like we have enough DT starters coming back from injury and/or depth that... Our focus really needs to be finding Hutch some help... In other words, 1st round Defensive End. Doesn't have to be a world beater the 1st year... just has to replace Davenport's lost games (IE: be healthy...) and give something, anything, towards a pass rush opposite Hutch. I feel like all the other DE's on the team can fill in the blanks/ bench/ depth. IMO. Top offseason priorities: 1) Resolve Center. 2) Draft 1st round DE 3) Resolve the rest of the O-Line issues 4) Draft secondary depth at FS and CB. PS: I'm not certain Arnold/ Reed/ Amik plus depth locks in the CB position. But I'm uncertain at the moment how to resolve that just yet... FA for depth...?

  13. They can carry Meadows for his glove if enough other players are hitting. If McGonigle hits and Dingler keeps hitting that gives them two players a positions which are traditionally considered glove first positions.

  14. You assume way too much here. An atheist may or may not be a devotee of science. There are thousands reasons someone may or may not believe in God; being of a Scientific bent is only one and it isn't even particularly determinative. I know many religious scientific people and of we course we know many of the greatest minds in the history of science believed in God (e.g. Einstein). In my experience it's not Science that makes most atheists. Most people I know that don't believe in God have come to the conclusion from looking around at a world they believe is too f'd up to believe anybody is running it - no science required.

  15. This is ridiculous. The vast majority of posters here seem to be pretty happy with Harris overall. Wanting Harris to be a little more aggressive is not a suggestion that he's a flop. I personally love that he is a "college boy" and an analytic nerd, but that doesn't mean I am going like everything he does or doesn't do.

  17. I get the depth argument, especially for this upcoming year, although I wouldn't characterize the strategy as being the same as that for the Rule 4 draft, where you simply get the best available player regardless of position or what you have in your system now, then deal with sorting them out another day. I don't think we can pretend that if we were to sign Bregman and Bichette for multiple years—as some would like to—that there wouldn't be some sort of reckoning when it comes to McGonigle and Rainer. There have been plans in the works for these guys for a couple years now, and I don't think we can just disregard those plans in favor of whatever here and now pops up in front of us at any given moment. If we were to lock down those two guys, we would have to do something with the other two guys, which would probably mean selling off at least one of them for cheap because there's no room for them anymore, and any guy on the other side of a trade would know that. My point being that, while people simply like to disparage College Boy Harris in general, they like to do so in particular for his apparent planning for top prospects to make their way up through our system and into our starting lineups, because after all, prospects fail all the time, or something. And sure, there's always a chance any prospect will flop. But you can't effectively plan for the future if you're always setting aside any and all prospects in favor of whatever major leaguer comes available. I know that's how Dombrowski did it, and we won some divisions with him and a ****ton of payroll, but that's not the only way to skin the cat, and Dombrowski is, as Ernie would intone were he still here, "looooong gone." I might be on an island here, but I have not concluded that College Boy is a flop. I'm willing to give him the chance to make his plan work, and I'll jump onto the mainland with the rest of you if he ends up spinning his wheels instead of building winners.

  19. To me, McGonigle shouldn't keep you from Bregman. He's at the tier where you make it work. Polanco, Suarez, Bichette, etc would qualify as blocking McGonigle though, and you at least have to factor in that opportunity cost.

  20. I think it still makes sense, but is less likely to happen. Last year, there was an obvious opening, but not so much this year. The Tigers appear very committed to building around prospects and I think the fact that the best one is very close changes things a bit. I agree that it shouldn't be hard to make everything fit if they decide to take the risk though.

She invited them over for dinner and I think 7 people ended up coming. That morphed into an annual dinner hosted by my girlfriend and my partners wife. We're expecting over 200 people tomorrow.
