this is not a political press failing, but just a general example of how the people writing for the press are now so ignorant of the topics they write about that they make mistakes that make you question everything they say. Article in our 'paper of record' the NYT, about BP wanting to put a deep water rig out in the Gulf. The writer gives the depth of water they want to work in as 56,000ft. "Opponents said the extreme pressure and high temperatures required to operate in waters deeper than 56,000 feet heighten the risk of a blowout that could endanger Gulf communities and the marine ecosystem." There is no water on the planet anywhere near that deep (Marianas Trench about 36,000). So what are they even talking about? Deepest water in the Gulf is 13,000-15,000, average is about 5300. But how does a guy end up writing tech for the NYT who doesn't have some idea how deep the ocean are? We are gonna be doomed by our own descent into ignorance.4 points

A really sharp HS class mate of mine (1500 SAT kind of guy) went to Yale for Chemistry - ended up the science editor at Newsweek/WaPo. I don't imagine that happens too much anymore. Just doesn't pay enough.3 points

hard to see a US attempt to hold Kharg island as any more successful than the Russian attempt to hold Snake island.2 points

Evaluating this team right now is genuinely difficult given the quality of competition they've been facing. Beating a squad that's handing 12 minutes to 40-year-old Taj Gibson doesn't exactly move the needle as a measuring stick. The schedule is what it is — the Pistons can't control who's injured or who's quietly packing it in for the lottery. But the pattern is hard to ignore: against good, healthy teams, they've been losing. You have to go all the way back to February 19th against the Knicks to find a truly meaningful win. The defensive numbers are slipping too, and yes, Ausar's absence is part of that story — but only part of it. Scroll back to when he was healthy and the trend was already heading in the wrong direction. With the playoffs roughly a month away, you'd expect a team with genuine aspirations to be rounding into form, playing their sharpest basketball of the season. Right now, that's not what this looks like. There's still some ground to cover before this team resembles a playoff-ready version of itself.2 points

Maybe he will, maybe not. There is never an issue with trying to develop a young backup.2 points

And too many STEM people are similarly indifferent to if not outright contemptuous of the arts and humanities. You can see the roots of a lot of our problems in that siloing. On the one hand, well-meaning humanists with no clue as to how things work; on the other, antisocial technocrats with no check on their ambitions.1 point

I think in addition to the low pay, facts and truth dont make as much money as affirmation so why invest in facts and truth?1 point

Would not want Anthony Richardson for any amount or no amount. After the Hooker debacle let’s just move on from the dream of buying low on an injured mobile QB.1 point

If some of my Canadian acquaintances are any indication, they don’t care to hear me say I don’t like Trump either. They prefer I just shut the **** up and wear my guilt by association like a cilice.1 point

Disheartening. The Wings were fun to watch until mid-February... Still catching a game here and there but... They don't look good. And since then: I'd rather spend my time watching the Pistons at this point...1 point

It aged fine. I am not embarrassed at all by my middle eastern neighbors. They are fine people. In fact I am worried about them because assholes like you and your president may now make life difficult for them. They are a few days away from celebrating the end of Ramadan and I can't wait to smell and taste the wonderful goodies they will share with us. I missed them in my fitness classes at the gym. You on the other hand are a certified bigot and racist. I'm quoting this post to confirm it for everybody who has you on block/ignore to see for themselves. You should just leave here. You provide zero value to this MB. It would be better off without you. Nobody will miss you. And while you are at it it would be best if you never visited Dearborn or Michigan again. We don't really require your presence.1 point

The comparisons to war criminal George WMD. Bush are endless. Speaking of endless, here we are in another, seemingly endless war in the Middle East thanks to Trump. Just like we were with Bush in Iraq.1 point

My heart is breaking. Had to say goodbye to Sam today. A quick, sudden health issue that couldn’t be resolved. He was 18. I adopted him 11 years ago, and he was my dog Lucy’s partner in crime. for now, I’ll be pet less for a couple months to give my heart time to heal. Then I’ll be looking for another one or two companions for me at the shelter. Goodbye, Sammy-Sammy/Buddy-buddy. 💔0 points
