2023 Detroit Tigers Regular Season Discussion Thread

For all of the hullaballoo about adding depth to Toledo, it sure hasn't manifested itself into much of anything in Detroit. Or Toledo, for that matter. -

Hill last pitched on the 9th. Alexander and Englert last pitched on the 10th. Everybody else not named Boyd, Olson, or Lorenzen pitched yesterday. I would imagine they go with the first trio to throw a bulk of the game today. They just need to find a way to scrape by to the next off day (Thursday). Hill gets the biggest bulk today and then gets sent to Toledo for a fresher long arm? -
I didn't see Schoop or Cisnero.

That's fine & dandy on the surface. But teams face each other for a week at a time now. They wouldn't make any adjustments in games 4-6 of a series from what they've learned in games 1-3 of the same series, plus whatever advanced scouting is available (which to be honest, I don't know how much is available at different levels).

Both have FIPs below their ERAs. Both have been unlucky to an extent. Fulmer is allowing more base runners and home runs and striking out more batters than his career averages. There's probably a case that he hasn't pitched well. Soto is at a career low in runners allowed, particularly via walk (which is still on the high side). Hits allowed are down (hat tip to BABIP). It looks like he's not allowing as much hard contact as before. -

Arraez has an OPS above .900 right now. It probably is BABIP driven. On the other hand, his OBP heading into this was mid to high .700s (just from eyeballing it). I’d take that.

Props to you. You laid the groundwork for the fantasy team jinx which sounds like it would’ve gone well for the Tigers. Then folks audibly typed out stuff about having a lead in the game thread and that collective jinx was just too much for your jinx to bear. 3 stars to you for your efforts. 2 stars to the young 92 year old lady for making it to her 30th ballpark. 1 star to me because nobody else really deserves it. We cry ourselves to sleep again tonight and try our darndest again tomorrow. Carpe diem, morans. -
I don’t know if Harris is trying the same methodology sort of in a different bit of timing. Do the Tigers feel that they have the young core close enough to add free agents this upcoming offseason and they’re just sorting through some pieces right now? I don’t know if that’s the case. The upcoming free agent class certainly doesn’t have the cache that the 2021-2022 off-season did. My guess is he’s just trying to figure what the Tigers have going forward. Add in some other players just to make a roster without having to prematurely call up prospects, and maybe they uncover an overlooked ball player along the way. Finding themselves with a few games of “first” as late as May (wow, what an unimpressive sentence that actually is if you think about it) was fun for a week or two. As far as the young core is concerned, Greene is leading the pack, sure. I wonder whether Torkleson needs to go back down to Toledo. I wonder how confidence in being in a MLB roster vs confidence in results (which should happen in AAA) vs he’s mechanically/skillfully/technically where he should be and just not that far off works. I think that’s where Hinch and his psychology background comes in, so we’ve got to trust him being there everyday and dealing with Torkleson as opposed to us schlubs on the outside watching games and reading box scores. The pitching is impossible to read because of how the should be rotation has been decimated. Good times.

I understand AVG is but one component of a player's worth and not the end all be all of it. But that empty AVG is welcome to be moved into the Tiger lineup right about now.

At the same time, never underestimate the ability for an organization to mangle up a PR spun move. I don't think the job that Hinch has done the last two seasons should lead to his firing unless he's culpable for the lack of offense and poor rotation health. -
And on a related tangent, wasn't the Texas shopping spree during the offseason before the 2022 season when the went 68-94?
-
I tried something different this time. It seems like the Padres have really extended themselves long term. I don't know that any of the higher contracts (Tatis) are the way to go. Maybe something more nominal (Cronenworth, although his production his dipped this season), which would still help the other club reduce its payroll.
-
I had to look up what a SCI-FI was. Never knew there was an acronym for it. Did Trump give out treasure maps to find these boxes?
-
The lack of rotation depth was staring the team in the face from the beginning. I don't think it was quite obvious to a lot of folks.

Is Jung going to be a quick mover? Is it possible that Keith & Malloy graduate from Toledo this season and are in Detroit at 3B & LF next season? Jung lurking for 2B in the meantime? Some sort of everyday corner IF/OF/DH combination of Malloy/Keith/Baddoo/Torkelson/Carpenter? Add the right FA vet to that mix (doesn't have to be a big name, just someone to raise the floor). Up the middle with Greene in the grass, Baez & McKinstry on the dirt. Vierling, Maton, Kreidler, Short can figure in off of the bench or move on from them totally, that's fine. They won't all be back, but is there enough of a framework of in house options that have reasonable career timeline trajectories to compete in the division next season? With the low payroll, maybe free agency isn't the play, maybe take a salary off of another team via trade?
-
Yup. Trump might be the lead clown in the current political circus, but there's plenty of other acts from different angles that are tired and worn old.
-
Doing that with the everyday lineup might have them in the division lead right now.

Taylor Swift concert next door tonight. If you're going to the game, leave early to get there on time, and drive a Brinks truck to pay for parking. -
Shocked, but ready to agree to it.

Hopefully one of the 13 batting coaches has taken notice of this as well and they can make some adjustments quickly. I'm not suggesting the recent malaise is due solely to approach. Its just not a good lineup to begin with. But they need to find and employ any advantage they can. They need to minimize any disadvantage they can. -
