Stafford watch (A place for Stafford discussion)
RandyMarsh replied to RedRamage's topic in Detroit Lions
Stafford with the arm punt on 3rd and long, no harm no foul there on 3rd and long from that point in the field, an interception in the end zone is basically the same as an incompletion and ensuing punt/touchback. -
One thing to keep in mind on these trades is that yeah prospects in general are risky but what makes it even riskier is the team trading them knows more about them then the team trading for them so they are going to be more apt to trade the guys that may have drawn some red flags from their scouts or analytics departments. The guys with the lowest risk are guys that the team probably isn't going to want to get rid of and are just going to keep for themselves. That's not to say that prospects you trade for don't pan out but I think generally there must be some sorta flaws in them that you either have to work out once you get them or hope that the player just overcomes them.

James Edwards says Cade is active tonight so maybe this game will be watchable. -

They definitely need to get rid of Casey, I know this roster isn't good to say the least but even if it was I don't have the confidence in him that he would maximize it. I'm hoping that Weaver is just keeping him around for the time being knowing that we aren't going to contend anyway, kinda like the Tigers did with Gardenhire but when that time comes when they plan to compete they find somebody else. -
The only thing I can think of is that they wanted to get a feel of his personality, how he fits here, if he improves at all away from Sacramento etc. instead of signing him unknowingly in the offseason. Of course whether that is worth 2 second round picks is to be debated.
-
RBs are replaceable though, Henry missed most of the season yet Tennessee still finished with the best record in the AFC, the Rams made the Super Bowl with virtually nothing from Akers. The Cowboys drafted Elliott in the top 5 and they had their best season to date with him despite him having his worst season.
-
I was thinking about this last night, yeah Bagley was a top 5 pick so perhaps Weaver thinks there is some untapped potential there but how many cases in history has that actually worked out? Chauncey comes to mind but I can't think of any other off the top of my head where a top pick struggled for more than 2 years, the team gave up on him and he ended full filling his potential elsewhere. I'm sure it has happened but I can't think of any.

Just for fun I'd figure I'd do a mock with no trades. The board didn't exactly turn out like I wanted to, I didnt want to take a CB with our Rams pick but the top 6 WRs were gone so I went with McCreary cause I felt him along with Stingley and Gardner were the top tier CBs then a drop off after. Ebiketie is a beast and I think will probably go in the top 20 in the real draft so getting him in the 2nd I thought was a steal. Skye Moore I had as the 8th WR but from 7-12 I feel were all similar that's why I passed with the Rams pick so getting him with pick 101 I liked. Hassan I just took as a homer pick, that's about the round I like to take a RB and he happened to be the best one available so I went with him. The rest I can't say I put any thought into just grabbed who was ranked highest according to PFF at that position.

Jesus I just went and looked at that 93 team and I didn't realize how stacked it was, I was just a kid at that time so I only paid attention to HRs but looking at their OPS+ and it's nuts. They had 6 guys with 400+PAs with 130+ OPS+ and then Fielder with a 124 OPS+. I'm sure there is a way to look it up but I don't know how to but I would like to know how many teams throughout history could say that if any.

Law has changed the way he writes now too, it wasn't just Tigers fans that thought he hated them it was all because of the tone he would use. Even if he liked something or somebody he would spend more time highlighting the negatives and then maybe just put a little snippet of the positives. He doesn't seem to do that anymore. Like even in his chat the other day a Tigers fan basically was putting down our team about how horrible we draftex the past 20 years and how we can't find guys out of the first round and he's like "its hard to find guys like that, they found Skubal and have Kreidler and Dingler who I like, it hasn't been that bad. " like he was talking the fan off the ledge. He never used to be like that.
-
Yeah and I think he genuinely hated how we constructed the teams back then, it went against everything he liked. Like we basically ignored the draft by giving up picks to sign relievers and DHs, which went against his mentality, gave out huge contracts to guys that didn't look like would age well and would trade what good prospects we had for players that weren't exactly superstars like Sanchez,Infante and Fister. I remember him loving the Granderson trade cause that fit his taste on what he liked, trade a guy who is going to be expensive for 2 cost controlled players with upside.

This team is just a train wreck right now. I hope the fans in attendance atleast get to see a Ja poster dunk or something. In other games Doncic just put up 28 in the first quarter with 7 3s against the Clips. -
Law had high praise for Greene, said he has "wicked bat speed" and can handle center field for the foreseeable future but would be plus at the corners. Also says that "I can easily see him being a 300/400/.550 guy and if he does he would on the short list for best player in baseball"
-
On the flip side The Athletic gave us an A minus and said they loved the deal for us.
-
James Edwards has an article up now on the Athletic about the deadline, he doesn't specifically say what they turned down but says that from what he heard they were asking for 2 1st rounders or a young player(s) that could be a part of their future.

Stafford watch (A place for Stafford discussion)

I also feel with Lions fans part of the reason most are rooting so hard for Stafford is cause as Lions fan we never won anything so it's almost like those fans are trying to live their Lions fandom vicariously through Stafford since to them this is like the closest they ever gotten to celebrating a win in the NFL. I just don't feel that way at all or share that experience. Im not looking forward to this SB anymore or any less than any other one. -

This is about where Im at as well. I will say when Verlander left I did root hard for the Astros that year and rooted for him in particular but he is my favorite Detroit sports athlete ever so he was the exception, generally once the guy leaves I really don't care either way what they do. -
ESPN gave out their grades for our trade both the Clips and Kings got A's, the Bucks a C+ and the Pistons a D+. It sounded like their main critique was that we couldve just signed Bagley in the offseason if we wanted. While that is true this atleast gives us a little trial run with him to see if we potentially want to keep him long term.

I think people are putting way too much stock into how much teams care about draft position in baseball. Perfect example was the year we got Mize, all SF had to do was lose the last game and they'd get the 1st pick, instead they put out their best lineup including their ace pitcher. They could've easily rested them but they didn't. Then the following year the white sox were in contention for a top pick, what did they do? They called up all their top prospects including the then number 1 guy in baseball Yoan Moncada effectively killing any chance at number 1 or 2. Teams know that more than any other sport that baseball drafts are a crapshoot and they certainly aren't going to change the way they build their team or play the game for a better pick.
-
Yep, I know we get it in the NFL particularly with QBs and other skill position players but not to the extent of the nba. The second something goes just a little bit south somewhere the star player immediately wants out and they usually end up going to their preferred destination. I can understand somebody like Lillard who has been with his team for a better part of a decade getting tired of the situation and wanting out, much like Stafford did here but these guys like Harden who want out the first time there may be some adversity is tiresome.
-
Ideally the Bulls would be interested in Grant and we could pry away Patrick Williams for him. It's probably a longshot as I don't think they'd want to give up on him so soon but they just might if they feel Grant could be the piece that solidifies their chances of making a deep playoff run. I can't think of another young player that we could realistically get that has the potential of Williams.
-
BTW Dingler made Law's "Just missed" list and in his chat somebody asked about Kriedler and he said something to the effect of "I like him, think he could have a long career but not sure if he'll ever be a top 100 guy."
-
2021 Draft related but ESPN put out their redraft today and they still had us taking Sewell with our first pick but interestingly enough they had St.Brown going all the way up to the back of the 1st round.

Lol I used to get harassed by my golf buddies cause I would often wear my hat backwards when we played because I wanted my face to get a tan but I would often lose track of my ball in the sun so anytime I asked my friends where it went they'd point out that if I wore my hat the right way I may not have this issue.
