  1. Typical Chris Ilitch, shifting responsibility to someone else. He doesn't know who to hire for GM, so he's letting Hinch do it.
  2. That was the point of my comment. We judge managers based on their W/L records even though it's the players that determine the outcome. Hinch's reputation is solely based on how well he did in Houston. Take that away and just focus on what he has done in Arizona and Detroit. Would you believe he was capable of winning 100 games? Take a look at Torre's career. Would you believe he could win a bunch of World Series before going to New York? Managers are the most overrated part of the team and easily the most replaceable. Get a guy in there who isn't entirely incompetent and they'll win if you give them the talent.
  3. Torre was a complete failure of a manager until he got to New York. Sure, he had a few winning seasons, but never won 90+ games. Hinch was a failure in Arizona and is currently a failure in Detroit. If you have good enough players on the team, the manager becomes less important. A manager would really have to screw up hard to turn good talent into bottom feeders. No manager can turn a low talent team into a winning team.
  4. The fact that he's available now and cheap makes him an attractive option. Sure, ideally I'd want a 27-29 year old all-star, but I don't think that's gonna happen. They could cut Candelario now and plug Andrus in there and immediately be better. He could easily be a good fit for the bench if nothing else. I want to move on from some of these players and this could be a good place to start. Of course he isn't going to be a long-term option, but I don't think either Schoop or Candelario are long-term options either.
  5. He's hitting better than Schoop and will only cost the league minimum.
  6. He complained about the dimensions of Comerica Park, so maybe he was intentionally tanking so they'd get rid of him. He likely didn't like playing in Detroit, either because of the park, the manager, or the fact the Tigers weren't in contention (or something else entirely).
  7. Did they seriously release him as I was typing that out? Ok, sign him now and see if he's worth keeping for next year.
  8. I could see him getting close to $20 million/year as well. I'd like to see them get someone like Isiah Kiner-Falefa, who the Yankees got last year. But they'll likely have to make a trade, as I don't see anyone on the FA market that fits the bill. They're either really expensive (Swanson, Turner, Correa, Bogaerts) or washed up/utility players. I could see Oakland not picking up Elvis Andrus' option, but his defense has really gone south. If they really want to rid themselves of Schoop, they either have to spend a lot of money or go the trade route.
  9. Given his age, I highly doubt his elite defense is sustainable.
  10. They can always release him and eat the salary. It's not an ideal move, but sometimes that's what you have to do in order to move forward.
  11. I would hope the new GM would want to come in and clean house and get the players that he wants. What we have obviously isn't working, so changes need to be made. This means getting rid of guys like Schoop, Candelario, Barnhart, both Castros, and yes, even Miggy. This also might be the time to move Baez to 2B. C Jake Rogers/Eric Haase 1B Spencer Torkelson 2B Javier Baez SS Someone New 3B Someone New LF Akil Baddoo/Victor Reyes CF Riley Greene RF Someone New DH Austin Meadows For the bench, Kody Clemens could easily replace a Castro. There's still Daz Cameron and Kerry Carpenter for another OF. Bench players are a dime a dozen, so replenishing these players should be easy. You could argue that whoever they get to replace these guys wouldn't be any better than who they currently have (especially if they don't want to raise the payroll). But the way I see it, the further they get away from the failure of the current management, the better.
  12. The Tigers may have lost 7 in a row, but Oakland has lost 8 in a row.
  13. If the new GM allows Cabrera to be on this team in 2023, then he'll be no better than Avila. I don't care how good he was in his prime. the objective is to field the best 26 players, and Cabrera just isn't one of them anymore. No player should ever be in position to determine his roster position and playing time. If management allows that, then they have completely lost control of the clubhouse. The Tigers need a clean slate. A new GM, manager/coaching staff, scouting, player development, etc. Sure, they may mean getting rid of a few good coaches, but everyone is replaceable. This could be 2002 all over again, when they fired Randy Smith and Phil Garner. The Tigers could be back in the playoffs in 3-4 years, but they need to make changes and get the right people in the right positions.
  14. I'm all for trying the Hinch as GM experiment. It means having a new GM and a new manager, which they desperately need.
  15. The worst teams this year: Washington Nationals 36-71 Oakland Athletics 41-66 Detroit Tigers 42-65 Chicago Cubs 41-63 KC Royals 42-64 The Tigers are only 1 game better than the A's. They are 6 games better than the Nats. The Tigers do have a realistic chance of being the worst team this year (and a very good chance of being the worst team in the AL).
  16. Instead of paying him $32 million now, you want to pay him $110 million over 22 years (or $216,961,450 given a 6% interest rate)? No, give him the $32 million now and be done with it.
  17. I want to revisit this. Brad Miller signed with the Rangers for 2 years/$10 million and isn't hitting any better than Torkelson. Gonzalez signed a minor league deal with the Yanks and has played 55 ML games (1 at 1B) with production better than Tork. Cabrera didn't sign with anyone. I do want to point out that Tork wasn't ready and I really wish they would've signed someone capable of playing 1B, but at least they didn't move Schoop back there.
  18. I assume claiming him means taking on his full salary.
  19. Claimed? No. Sign him to as a free agent for league minimum? I don't think it'll hurt.
  20. And letting Chase Anderson walk was the right thing to do because everything the Tigers do is the right thing to do.
  21. Of course. And when/if they get healthy that's when you release Keuchel. He is no way a long-term solution.
  22. Can Rony Garcia really be counted on to get significant innings? He hasn't been a regular starter since 2019 in AA. The fact that they were desperate enough to start Garcia shows their lack of depth. I'm willing to bet the reason he got injured was because they were trying to push him beyond his limits. Maybe Keuchel isn't the answer, but I do believe they need some outside help.
  23. You say that as if they aren't currently in a tankathon.
  24. The Tigers are finished.
