    Never know... the Tigers player dev reputation was in the toilet then. He could have told them no at any price, and if so, why take that risk?

    I have to go back through my texts but I have a lot of friends in the Cincinnati area and vaguely remember one saying they knew somebody who was abused by him while with the Reds. I could be misremembering though.

    Keith is one guy. He's also somebody who bulked up a lot and lost a lot of the agility required to make good throws on the infield. There's no guarantees Rainer would follow a similar path.

    Yeah... MLB's investigation very clearly uncovered a lot more. Dickerson's Tiger Talk rant last year hinted that he was let in on some of what was known.

    I remember when the Tigers had too many starting pitchers last spring and it took until June for bullpen days to be regular.

    But if you cash in your draft picks for major league production, does that mean you don't draft well? I will use Maybin and Miller as an example.

    No... The only exception being the same player being claimed in a waiver period: a team that already claimed him moves to the back of the line. The risk is roster spot. You have to keep the guy around for a couple days (full week in the offseason), so you can't just bypass the roster crunch.

    Regarding waiver priority, I wanted to point out that it is straight current year winning percentage. League only takes precedent in a winning percentage tie. That is a common myth. The Tigers do not have priority over the Rockies for American League players. Very common mistake people make.

    12 drafts into the MLB Draft slot system, most teams are willing to pay the tax on the 5% overage. The Rockies have never once gone above their bonus pool.

    As for 40 man crunch when Meadows gets back, if Brebbia isn't a casualty, Cobb is still on the 15-Day IL and can be slid to the 60 without affecting his eligibility to return.

    If Olson is ready, you can send Montero down and buy a couple days with Smith as an extra reliever. I suspect they may pull the plug on Brebbia though unless somebody is hurt.

    Funny that over the offseason people said the same about Baez too. All the more reason to kick the tires on Maeda for a bit and see if there is something there.

    A player taken in the Rule 5 isn't really "let go." Given the roster crunch at the end off the offseason, somebody of value would have been DFA'd if Hicks was taking up a spot.
