get used to it, boys.

if i told you before the season thst the wings would be without vrana, bertuzzi, hronek, sundquist, and rasmussen, you would have totally said they were likely a last place team.  or close to it.

and that's what they are now.

they'll probably still luck into 3 or 4 wins this month...but maybe not?  if the isles make the playoffs, having two picks in the top 15 of this draft will definitely help.

SY did leave himself a big hill to climb in the offseason. Even with the most optimistic progress by all the minor league guys in the system, he's going to have to get a quality experienced Dman and probably two forwards via trade/FA just to get back to where they were before he pulled the plug. The picks are great for the view over the horizon,  but they still can't miss the playoffs again next season.

why not?

when he took over they were the worst team in modern nhl history.  and then got screwed by the league in the lottery so much that they changed the rules (just in time to screw them again).

they are re-setting the timeline on this team to the appropriate level - the current group of 18-22 year olds - and loading up on first round picks.  next year i expect perron to be dealt too for a couple second round picks, hopefully zadina shows just enough to bring back something too.  the vestiges of the old regime need to be removed, like the tigers, they set back the franchise for a decade and new mgmt is here to dig them out.

this is what they needed to do a decade ago.  SY has the cachet to be able to do it now and is doing it.  if you thought perron and copp and kubalik would turn this team into a playoff contender, that's on you.  they were never going to be better than buffalo and ottawa, teams that have been picking in the top 5 for a decade (and not fucking it up like detroit).

because you're allowed to be bad, but not allowed to go backward. Ask Avila.

?

what did you want them to do?  the alternative is sign bertuzzi long term and trade assets for a stop gap defenseman so they might finish 8th and get swept by boston?  is that what you wanted?

Everything's fine as long as Yzerman has a very active summer. Sundqvist, easy to replace. But need to replace Bertuzzi and what we thought Vrana could be. So a big splash on a 1st line or 2nd line forward, either by trade of 1st rounders or UFA. And a top-4 defenceman to replace Hronek. That's just to tread water compared to this year. Need more moves on top of that to move forward into strong playoff position. And it's not going to come from top 5 draft picks, because those aren't coming our way unless with crazy lottery luck one year.

there really isnt anybody to get in this offseason...unless you want to re-sign bertuzzi.  meier wont be there.

i wouldnt be surprised if they deal some of their LHD prospects for a RHD.  they need some.

i think kasper will make the team next year, like raymond did.  he seems like their type of player.

rasmussen back will help, but they need to get more physical.  theyre really pushed around way too much still.

Not a great few minutes for the 2018 draft.  Veleno takes a dumb high sticking penalty while already on the penalty kill.  Wings manage to kill the other penalty, but Zadina makes some dumb half pass leaving the zone instead of putting the puck deep into the Hawk's zone.  He goes to the bench, too bad he turned the puck over and Larkin can't get into the play in time to cover the eventual goalscorer.  Lalonde must be losing his mind.

A home loss to Chicago would mean we’re in the midst of a collapse

Yzerman may have had to do what he did as a good GM, but for a team to fight its way right the edge of contention and then have management pull the plug has to be a big let down in the locker room. Add that to the talent loss, I'm not taking the over on any estimates of how many more they win the rest of the way.
