Summer 2023 Off-Season Thread

San Jose has needed to rebuild for the longest time. To fully complete a rebuild they needed to get out of their high-priced contracts and get draft capital. This is a good deal for them it seems.

BTW, I L-O-V-E those new teal jerseys of they have. Those are some of my favorite jerseys in sports. Those and their inaugural teal and silver jerseys.

san jose got back a low first round pick and salary.  i dont think this was a good deal for them, i think it was the only deal they could get.

they didnt get very much for meier or karlsson.

Huh?

I saw that post last night on X but didn't see any other credible X accounts or X's that confirm the story, at least as of last night. I didn't see Friedman, Dreger or any of the other NHL Beatwriters X anything about it.

It is always funny to me when non-tough hockey players do goon **** outside of the game for some reason.  I am guessing there is more context here.  Sprong has a reputation as an asshole (at least from his Pittsburgh days and he doesn't seem to stick with any team very long) but it seems odd for him to just randomly assault someone...

Wings trade for Jeff Petry, hometown boy comes home way too late ugh.  Gave up Lindstrom and a conditional 4th round pick but I don't really see the need for this.

I guess it's a wash to me. Petry has little remaining future, but neither did Lindstrom. And Montreal is picking up 50% of the $

Ya they didn't give up much, feels more like rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.  Hopefully Petry doesn't sulk if the Wings are losing like he did in Montreal.

gustav was not an nhl regular.  in many cases not even an nhl caliber player.

stevie loves his veteran physical defensemen.  its only for 2.3m for 2 years.

my only concern is if were getting into ken holland territory if letting some of the prospects overcook in the minors.

or....

there's another move coming that ships out some of those defense prospects.

Gustav just wasn't strong enough to be effective

Thinks the game too slowly too.  It is a shame I thought he would develop a bit more, he has a decent first pass out of the zone and excels at getting his shot on net through traffic.....otherwise nada.

I can sorta see some logic in that Petry and say...Holl will have much more defensive roles compared to Edvinsson and Wallinder's early seasons while the old guys are still around.  Still not much room for the young kids sadly, but my guess is Gostisbehere is probably more of an obstacle to the two young d coming up because they'll need to be sheltered.  I do feel your concern though, I would love to see the young guys get time and it seems like it'll be tough this season.

Petry will be a good transition guy (better than Lindstrom) to get from Seider + ___???___ to Seider + Hopefully Tuomisto & Pellika... and Gibson? Anton Johansson?

(Sorry... I'm talking futures here... Holl & Petry are the transition guys to get us to our future hopeful right-side D's...)

I’m guessing Leafs fan should be happy with that. If my  math is right, only about $1.3mm per year more than his current cap hit.

A lot of Leafs and media are griping because they don’t think there was enough trade off in terms of a lower salary in exchange for the the shorter term than the Leafs had wanted  I think they’re missing the big picture though. Matthews has no obligation to take a hometeam discount and there is probably one team who would have given him more money next summer. The Leafs’ window would have been closing if this was Matthews’ last year unless one has confidence Treliving would have deployed the cap savings wisely.
