To fully complete a rebuild they needed to get out of their high-priced contracts and get draft capital. This is a good deal for them it seems. BTW, I L-O-V-E those new teal jerseys of they have. I can sorta see some logic in that Petry and say...Holl will have much more defensive roles compared to Edvinsson and Wallinder's early seasons while the old guys are still around. Still not much room for the young kids sadly, but my guess is Gostisbehere is probably more of an obstacle to the two young d coming up because they'll need to be sheltered. A lot of Leafs and media are griping because they don’t think there was enough trade off in terms of a lower salary in exchange for the the shorter term than the Leafs had wanted I think they’re missing the big picture though. Matthews has no obligation to take a hometeam discount and there is probably one team who would have given him more money next summer. The Leafs’ window would have been closing if this was Matthews’ last year unless one has confidence Treliving would have deployed the cap savings wisely.
