2023 Predictions

10 games is a 1 win improvement over last season. I think they can and should do better.

progress is not linear.  they're not going to just win more games every year until theyre 17-0.  the nfl is full of close games.  a lot depends on timing, injuries, and turnovers.  goff didnt turn the ball over ONCE during their big run last year.  i dont forsee that happening again.

i expect them to be better because i expect the defense to be better.  i expect the offense to be the same.  i can see 10-12 wins for them if they stay healthy and get some luck.

but im a pessimist!  🙂

especially when it comes to the lions.

It's not linear, but I do not believe they will get off to the slow starts they did each of the last two seasons. I have them going 6-2 into the bye week and building from there to get to 12 wins. I should be more pessimistic after 36 years on this Earth of getting the rug pulled out from under me every time I have believed in this team. But you can't compare prior regimes and teams to what is presently on the field and who is presently running the organization. What Sheila Ford-Hamp, Brad Holmes, Dan Campbell, and co. doing genuinely looks and feels different than what we have ever seen in the past. This isn't the 11-5 Lions about to turn around and lay an egg the next year by going 4-12. This is a team that has made meaningful and significant offseason improvements. Improvements that will allow them to substantially build on what they did last year down the stretch. I expect great things from this team, up to and including, both a division win and playoff win at home.

21 (NFC Championship Game) - @ Philadelphia Eagles - L 38-35

Revisiting my picks 1/3 of the way through the NFL season…

I thought we’d be 4-2 through 6 and we are 5-1. My route to 12-5 (and a franchise record tie with 91 for the most wins in a season) was 5-1 in the division and 7-4 out of it. With the way the division is shaping and the way the Raiders, Saints, and Broncos look? 12-5 is almost shaping up to be a floor.

I did get the Lions record correct but not much else. I had the Bengals at 14-3 and they didn't even make the playoffs. I had the Jets at 12-5 and their season went down game one, minute one. Also my NFC South predictions were waaaaay off base too.

I got the 12-5 correct for the Lions, but ironically only got one loss correct (Ravens) in the game-by-game prediction.

Dead-on Correct (5): Dolphins, Jaguars, Cowboys, Seahawks, Lions

Off by One Game (9): Bills, Steelers, Titans, Chiefs, Broncos, 49ers, Cardinals, Bears, Saints

Off by Two Games (5): Ravens, Commanders, Vikings, Packers, Falcons

Not Even Close (13): Jets, Patriots, Bengals, Browns, Texans, Colts, Raiders, Chargers, Eagles, Giants, Rams, Bucs, Panthers

AFC Playoffs: 5/7 correct (no Bengals or Jaguars)

NFC Playoffs: 4/7 correct (no Falcons, Giants, or Seahawks)

I'll take it. Within two games of a correct prediction for 19 NFL teams isn't bad and I'm pretty happy with five being correct predictions. NFC North was the only division I was within two games for every team.

I'm not going out on much of a limb in terms of my playoff predictions since I'm going with SF and Baltimore in the SB with Baltimore winning it. If I were to have to choose a non 1 seed than I think I would go with our Detroit Lions and Buffalo.

That player eligible call actually ended up helping the Lions. If we would have had the 2nd seed, we would have played Green Bay. This way, we got that 2nd home game and Dallas started their off-season. It worked out perfectly...Thank You, Brad Allen...😁

I've been following the officials' assignments this postseason... Not one official on the Allen crew has worked a playoff game yet. The closest they've come is as alternates. Allen himself was the alternate for Bills/Steelers.

Probably means his whole crew will work the NFCCG next week.

Yeah, they announced they wouldn't get any playoff assignments. And while they blew the Lions game and it will be remembered, it only cost them a regular season game. But we avoided Green Bay and we got that 2nd home game we should have gotten by being the 2 seed. It worked out very well for us.

I'll believe that when I see it. Schefter has his sources, but I doubt that NFL officiating would sell its own under the bus like that. It's bad for business.
