Who starts Sunday?
Right-hander Casey Mize — whom Hinch said before Friday's game was "listed in the starter column" — could start Sunday in the series finale against the Orioles.

He also might not.

"We'll see what happens," Hinch said before Saturday's game. "We haven't named a starter for tomorrow. That would be his first day eligible to pitch on full rest. He may or may not make that start. We might do something completely different. I don't know how today's game is going to go. We'll talk about it after the game."

HUSH:Tigers find competitive advantage in staying quiet about pitching plans

If Mize doesn't start Sunday, he wouldn't start until Wednesday against the Tampa Bay Rays if the Tigers plan to keep him in the "starter column," as Hinch previously mentioned.

Tork got pinch hit for last night...unsure if Mize will start in today's game.

Baltimore has some very good LH hitters. And LF is harder to hit home runs. Hinch probably saved Holton yesterday so he could start today. And keep throwing LH pitchers to nullify those LH bats?

I did some mathing. After Friday's game, the Tigers are 25-11 since August 11th. (According to the Free Press.) I think that works out to a .694 winning %. It also works out to around 112/113 wins in a 162 game schedule.

Not 35-5 but I'll take it.

Det-KC

KC 7 Det 6

Det-Minn

Minn 7  Det 6

Det-Sea

Det 5 Sea 1

Sea-KC

Sea 3 KC 3

Sea-Minn

Minn 5 Sea 2

KC-Minn

Minn 7 KC 6

Here is why I think the Tigers would win the tiebreaker with KC as long as it was a 3-way tie involving Seattle. The Tigers head to head to head against KC and Seattle is 11-8, KC's is 10-9, and Seattle's is 4-8.

How about a 3-way tie with Minnesota and Seattle? The Tigers' head to head to head against Minnesota and Seattle is 11-8, Minnesota's is 12-8, and Seattle's is 3-8. So the Tigers would still lose a tiebreaker to Minnesota, even if it involves Seattle too.

How about a 4-way tie with Detroit, KC, Minnesota and Seattle, with two teams making it? The Tigers' head to head to head to head against KC, Minnesota and Seattle is 17-15, KC's is 16-16, Minnesota's is 19-14, Seattle's is 6-13. So the Twins and Tigers would make it.

I don't think they used combined records in tie breakers. If there was a 3 way tie, the Tigers would push Seattle out but the Twins and/or KC would push the Tigers out.

I'm not sure but I think they do use the combined.

https://www.mlb.com/news/mlb-playoff-tiebreaker-rules

It's more complex for three-team ties.

If the three clubs DO NOT all have identical records against one another and Team X has a better record against Teams Y and Z, then Team X is the qualifier. If Team X and Y have identical records against one another and each has a better record against Team Z, then Teams X and Y follow the two-club tiebreaker rules to determine the qualifier. Otherwise, the three clubs are ranked by their overall winning percentage against one another, and the club with the highest overall winning percentage is the qualifier. If two of the clubs have identical winning percentages in this scenario, then they would follow the two-club tiebreaker procedure.

Would you rather play Houston on the road or Baltimore on the road? I think if we pass both the Twins and KC, we play Baltimore?

Great question. Probably Baltimore. Which means yes we’d have to pass both KC and Minnesota.

Incidentally, with the Dodgers’ loss yesterday, no MLB team will hit 100 wins this year.

Parity. Now we just need a hard salary cap in baseball. These Yankee and Dodger team just spend their way to wins.
