Pat Caputo died?  Pancreatic cancer sucks...It appears to be way more prevalent in Michigan than the rest of the places I hear about.

CDC confirms

Great tweet today that I read. Ted Turner spent 20 years making it easy for a kid in Montana could watch the Braves. MLB has spent 20 years making it harder for a kid in Atlanta to watch the Braves.

Try Parkinson's Disease.  The Rust Belt has higher rates and SE Michigan has 10 times the rates as the rest of Michigan.    Manufacturing polution and pesticide use are the main theories.

There's more pesticide use in SE Michigan? I've lived in the south for a while now, and there's a bunch more needed down here. Also, a lot of the anti-pesticide (not all) stuff out there is junk science, so I immediately have some skepticism when I hear them blamed for something.

we use too much 2,4D, but so does everyone. For my money it's a bit insane to plant grass and then put poison on it to stop things that naturally grow in grass from living there (e.g. dandelions). YMMV.

I use it... in concert with the warning labels and at the recommendation of the local extension office. If you do that, there is little risk to the environment. And down here weeds can take over and kill a lawn.

I worked in the chemical industry too long not to take a rebuttable presumption against all chlorinated aromatics.

This, and as an ecologist I know it's often best to have more diversity in a lawn. What we call weeds often provide food for pollinators.

Someone very close to me has just been diagnosed with Parkinsons. Imagine if we spent a trillion dollars a year trying to find effective treatments and cures for insidious **** like that.

But hey, we got people to bomb.

I don’t think people give enough thought to the idea that the environment of a particular area might be a big contributing factor to the wide spread of certain diseases there. Seems like for a decade or more now, my wife would tell me about yet another person she grew up with who stayed in the area and who died of cancer in their 40s or 50s. She grew up in rural-ish Wisconsin half an hour east of Green Bay, where there has been a lot of industrial farming ever since she was a kid. I suspect the soil and ground water there have been polluted beyond belief.

I think a lot of it has to do with the folks there being conditioned to be prejudiced against environmental action, which, I will just leave it there. But I suspect they don’t believe that’s a real factor.

Mark Fuhrman died today. He indirectly helped a guilty man go free on OJ Simpson with his disastrous testimony.

But he was also instrumental in getting Michael Skakel tried and convicted in the murder of Martha Moxley.

I think OJ was going to be found Not Guilty anyway

The slo-mo chase.   I remember that evening. It was a Friday.   I had just moved back home frm Georgia/North Carolina.   It was VERY hot that day and we were watching the chase down at the Atwarter (I think that's what it was called over by East Jefferson).   The end of the chase and aftermath at his house was in the corner of the screen during an NBA finals game
