this is generally why so many of these back and forths are silly. And a big piece is that the internet reports factoids without context instead of complete stories; and with a factoid the listeners add whatever context fits their bias. A half-way decent political press should tell you what Patel or Whitmer are doing there overall. I certainly don't care if either of them show up at the games if they manage to do something useful overall on the trip, we don't need to be Puritanical. But we don't get that - or at least never until well after all the hot air and venom has been spewed around. 

Like the right's big MN story. There is fraud and abuse in every program. It's just the way it is - in the end it always costs more to get rid of last few percentage points of loss than to just let them go. That's just being practical - the most money in NOT saved by the most buttoned down program because the buttons cost a lot of money too. So the real question is the context - is it worse in one place than another, what is the actual scale compared to the overall spending? Numbers with lots of zeros always sound newsworthy, but the dollar aint what it used to be. 'Billions' in fraud may be less than rounding errors when Trillions are being spent. But we don't get those contexts reported either, because the media machines aren't interested in truth, only in scoring points for their side.

The FBI is an American domestic law enforcement agency. Kash had absolutely no business in an overseas foreign country, other than the fact that he wanted to go to a gold medal Olympic game. How many Americans would jump at a chance to attend such an event? What he did was the equivalent of stealing from a company to go there, he would be fired at any normal business. Trump just tells him "good job, keep up the good work." Grifters gonna grift.

The Italian government covering for someone in the MAGA administration isnt a surprise. Italy is also run by a MAGA type right wing grifter.

You're probably right about Kash just wanting to be there for the game, but the FBI absolutely has a role outside of the US and Mueller was in Greece ahead of the last Olympics there to consult on security preparations.  If something happened to US athletes while in Italy, Kash absolutely would have been partially responsible.  

All that said, you're absolutely right.  He wanted to be there for the Olympics, just like Whitmer.

I didn't see Whitmer drinking like a frat boy and dancing around like an idiot. Kash showed a serious lack of decorum and would be fired by an administration that isn't so dysfunctional.

Absolutely agree.  Only reason he wouldn't have been fired in my administration is because he would have never been allowed to sniff around DC if I was in charge to begin with.

Maybe these unreleased documents that NPR is citing is bogus. Maybe the claim is bunk and has not an ounce of merit to it. I wouldn't want President Trump or any person accused of a crime they did not commit. Maybe there is nothing to them whatsoever. Frankly, I hope that is true, because the details sounds awful on the surface. But why not release the documents for the public, law enforcement agencies, investigative journalists, etc. to see? Why the need to keep them under wraps? If it is completely unsubstantiated that should be made public and Trump shouldn't be accused of something he didn't do.

It's hilarious to me though when the President's supporters act like every claim against him is a salacious one and have an attitude that a claim is unfounded. It's hilarious to me because the current President, Donald Trump, spent years ginning up and pushing the claim that Barack Obama was an unlawful citizen and unlawful President of the United States. That he somehow is a fraudulent President because he is not a real, true American. Even after a legit copy of his Hawaiian birth certificate was produced and made public, Trump and others on the right still pushed the conspiracy about him. And it wasn't as if Trump mentioned Obama's citizenship in passing. He talked about it publicly numerous times. He was a lead spokesman for birtherism. He put up an offer of $5 million for the publication of his college and passport applications. So if you don't want people pushing conspiracies or false theories about you, maybe don't do it to them?

Your key line here is ahead (def before) the last Olympics. The hockey game was on the last day of the Olympic Games. Where was he two weeks (or more) ago.

Yup, I'm not saying they are equal.  Just wanted to correct the statement that the FBI only works domestic issues.  The vast majority of what they do is domestic, but they absolutely are involved in international affairs and protecting US citizens at a high profile event would definitely be one of them.  But 100% there was zero "need" for the director to be there.

International affairs like what's happening in Mexico? I wasn't aware of any issues going on in Italy. Convenient that he just happens to be there for the deciding gold medal game. Or...we could just say the ONLY reason he went there was to watch hockey. It's very obvious and there's absolutely no denying it.
