I do remember there was a campaign to remove the ad from television, and that it worked. It was a case study in one of my communications classes in the 80s.

It was dumb then, and this is dumb now.

Personally I'd prefer a society where stupid culture war **** was less pervasive and didn't matter more than material consequences as it pertains to society, but here we are. And while you can blame the influencers, the media that blows the stuff out of proportion and the consumers of said media who eat it up bear as much or more responsibility for why it keeps happening.

I try to be respectful to everyone because I have respect for myself. People wanting to be represented equally in media is not a new thing.

regarding cities.... I got back from San Diego last week and immediately drove to a wedding in Louisville.  MAGA family's first question about our trip was "Did you see a lot of homeless people".  It's like they get off on it.

Yes we did see some. It's a beach in the best climate in the country, not too hot, not too cold.  Why wouldn't a person without a home be there?  Did they bother me? No. Not once were we solicited.  They were just sitting or laying there like everybody else around who presumably had a place to go when finished.

Plus they came out during the 70s, a decade which sexualized underage girls to a frightening and unprecedented degree. It was actually the Brooke Shields documentary from a few years ago from which I learned why that actually happened.

I'm torn... most of the time I roll my eyes when people tell me my city is burning to the ground or is too dangerous to walk around...

Another part of me likes it because I'd rather not have them around anyway.

Flip side: I saw an astonishing number of unhoused people in Anchorage and Fairbanks, and, of course, Portland. It's something about western cities.

Boston has a fair number of homeless also... linked in part to closure of a treatment center on Long Island.

ETA unfortunately a lot of cities have people displaced by the high cost of housing, and a lot of them are blue cities. That's probably why many people who are right of center seem so happy when they hear of 'violent homeless people' wandering their streets. It just fits and confirms what they believe to be true.

I encountered homeless pretty much every day when I worked in Boston.  In eleven years, they never behaved aggressively or in a threatening way.  They would ask for money and then usually say "God bless" whether I gave them anything or not.

I’m moving to Detroit in a month and I’m pretty excited about it. I look forward to not being around these people.

I would be surprised if Louisville didn't have a higher murder rate than San Diego....

Maybe MI has caught up on this one by now, but I was impressed on a trip this Spring (before they apparently closed them all!) that the rest stops on I-75 in Ohio were stocked with Naloxone dispensers....
