That’s the buzz on the boards.

Imagine the face to face (or voice to voice, or text to text) pressure they get from gambling interests—the kind they can’t report.

When I first saw the link, I immediately thought it was 1875 just as you did, but when I clicked on the box score and I saw Don Kessinger I did a double take, and read it correctly.

Bud Black was just fired.  Thankfully the Tigers faced them before the Rockies hire the next guy who will no doubt turn them around into immediate winners.

In 1883, Providence beat Philadelphia 28-0 behind Old Hoss Radbourn.

As a kid I had a 1975 fleer all-time greats card of Old Hoss. Good name for a pet dog

Old Hoss paid homage to Fernando Rodney’s dad when he pitched.

Old Hoss pitched in the 600 inning era. Over 2 seasons (1883-4) he started 141 games, completing 139. He went 108-37. In total he won 300+ games in 11 seasons. I also heard he was an excellent bowler and was the first riverdance phenom

New manager:  Brad Ausmus

Warren Schaeffer will be the “interim” manager. He’s been in the Rockies organization for years. He was managing the Asheville Tourists years back when we saw them play and they were affiliated with Colorado. He played for Asheville prior to getting into coaching. He may work out to be a good choice.
I agree with what Dave Roberts said in defense of Black upon his firing, (paraphrasing) ‘Casey Stengal couldn’t make this team a winner.’

Jed appears to be unclear on the nature of the major league baseball business: namely, it's a legalized monopoly that's essentially a license to print money regardless of the quality of the product.

True. Team value increases no matter the product on the field. OTOH, you have teams like the Mets or Dodgers who don't seem to care about spending huge money on payroll. Yes, they're bigger markets and  making more money but they're spending it for the best possible product. And if a team is run properly, they don't need to spend so much. Drafting and developing players can work just as well as giving out huge contracts to established starts. It's just much slower.
