With this sample size, I could see Hinch moving him down in the order, at least. Maybe even a day off to start the game?

Move down in the lineup, no. When he wants to give Riley a day off it will be against a lefty, but he's not going to platooned against lefties the way Carpenter is.

Looking at his splits last year, he also struggled against LH pitchers. He's still really young so I understand keeping him in the lineup. But why not give Carpenter the same opportunity?

It's never too early to start throwing out relief pitchers names that may be available for the Tigers to go after at the trade deadline, or sooner? I mean, do most of us agree that the Tigers need a shut down closer or set up man? Or are we comfortable with Vest closing? Hmmm.....

It generally takes about three years of data for a left right platoon split to have meaning.

The book on Carpenter was written very quickly. A platoon player. Maybe there's data from the minors that make the difference?

Riley is a plus defender, Carp is not.

True. Hinch did the same with Parker last year, you can't replace that defense. But with Javy out in CF? Hinch has more options.

Vest is the least of their problems in the pen. Brieske and Holton need to get back to where they were last year.

also, Riley's approach is one that profiles better for success against the opposite side as he goes opposite field more and walks more than Carpenter.

Walks more against LH pitchers? He's at almost a 50% strikeout rate. Yeah, small sample size...bla bla bla. Riley is among lead leaders in strikeouts. He's still a very young player and it IS a small sample size but at this point, it's not very impressive.

I tend to believe last season was an outlier for Holton. I expect he can pick it up some from where he is now but I really don't expect to see him duplicate 2024 again in his career. Brieske's problem is poor command - there is enough upside in the stuff for him to improve if he can throw more strikes, of course you can say that about half the pitchers that wash out of MLB.

The other thing with platooning Carpenter is that Hinch can use him later in the game when the starter is out in key situations….plus we have a couple of guys that bat right handed that can play his position just as well who hit lefties better.

Greene provides better defense and overall skill set so it makes a lot less sense to use him in that way.

Not really, He was never coming here anyway.

It might be even worse than this: Holton's also much worse this season than 2023. The main problem is that his cutter isn't really cutting and he's not fooling anyone with it this year, and he has increased his usage of that pitch to even higher than last year. He will probably have to retool his mix to work in more four-seamers and sinkers and throw changes off those. He should probably dump or rework the sweeper as well.

As for Brieske, the sinker is killing him. Maybe he needs to show the pitch outside the zone early in the count and then pound them with heat.

It is hard to say.  He injured his quad running the bases.  It wasn't necessarily a cumulative thing like a stress factor or something that was destined to happen.  It could have just been an unlucky movement on the bath path.

Might reduce the chance that he opts out—he was likely counting on a full season of production playing in Fenway. Would be great if Devers refuses to go back to 3B now.

IIRC he said something like:  "I put my glove away for the season" or something like that when he was asked to go to 1st, so I wouldn't be surprised.
