I wonder if RJ Petit is going to be a candidate for the Tigers or not, but he's had an excellent year, and needs to be protected from the rule 5.

The 40 man is going to be crowded; I don't know that he gets protected.

Sears moved up to AA; he has great numbes in A+ but as a lefty who tops out at 95 I am always wary of those types.

Did you mean 95?  If so, out of curiosity, why would that be a concern to you?

So, he's not exactly a soft-tossing lefty. Still, he generally sits in the 91-93 range, and those types tend to get hit harder as they progress to AA and AAA, based on my observation, because they usually have a breaking ball that younger players may struggle with.  He does have a nice 10+ K/9 in A+ though so someone to keep an eye on as he is only 22 right now.

There are currently 24 lefties, both starters and relievers, in the majors whose fastball averages at least 95 mph

I am not saying you can't be successful without the velocity but what I am saying is unless you have good-great command and control there is a higher likelihood of not having success with the lower velocity. That is all I am getting at is the low minors if you have a good off-speed pitch with lower velocity you can get great numbers but it doesn't always translate as you go further up. Sears isn't a super highly rated prospect but I always pull for guys like that.

LLM bringing the goods, as always.

Graham and Peck both intrigue me at WM.  Probably no room to move them up to Erie, but looking forward to seeing how they progress.

I think this is Graham's first real healthy season so it's good to see some of the tools he was drafted for show up. I was curious when they got rid of Jim Jarvis is either him, Peck or Pacheco were going to get moved up but it didn't happen.

Is Hau Yu Lee heading to Detroit this season ?

Cody Stavenhagen seemed to assume as much on his Friday pod.  Once rosters expand, he alluded to the fact that Lee had as good of a chance as anyone else to grab one of those spots.

I don’t know.  Maybe he’ll have earned it on the field by then.  But that might not be the Tigers’ need at that point.  I’m not saying Stavenhagen is wrong.  But with the failures of the bullpen and the number of arms brought in, that might mean those spots are taken by relievers to figure out via September audition who makes a playoff roster.

Well of the two spots, one has to be a position player. You are capped at 14 pitchers after the rosters expand.

At the time of that podcast, I would have said Sweeney. Now, I would say the spot is Vierling's or Meadows's if they are healthy come September 1. If not, Malloy would seem to be higher on the totem pole.

Ah, OK.  I knew there was a cap of 13 pitchers when the rosters are at 26.  But I never gave it a thought about after roster expansion.

Question about roster expansion; Do teams have to use the roster as of August 31st to set a playoff roster? Or...is it any player on the 40 man roster who can be used for a playoff roster?
