We can fix our ball pen, but we can’t fix our offense via the trade deadline. So trade for swinging his arms and wait for the offense to recover. It’s a slump and a bad one, but it won’t last the rest of the year. We’re better than this And we will show it once we are. We will need some bullpen help. That’s all we can do no need to ruin the nice cachet of minor league players.

Yankees acquiring Ryan McMahon from the Rockies for two prospects....gave up fringe prospects.

He is due $16 million in each of the next two seasons...salary dump.

Herring isn't a fringe prospect. He is trending up pretty majorly, was just drafted last year. He has been lights out this year. That is a good get for McMahon. That tells me the asking price for Geno is huge.

Mine would be even worse.  When I try to have my zoom lectures transcribed, it doesn't understand my Boston accent at all.

Talk about steady performer, here is Ryan McMahon's OPS+ 2021 through this year: 98; 98; 94; 93; 92.

You will get THE Matt Manning and LIKE it!!!

Sure, but probably not as much as I'd like Alex "I have no idea where the ball is going to go" Lange being brought back.

3. Detroit Tigers

On the days Tarik Skubal pitches, the Tigers could be the best team in baseball; it's possible that in the postseason, he could be his generation's version of Orel Hershiser or Madison Bumgarner, propelling his team through round after round of playoffs to the World Series.

But the Tigers might have Skubal for only the rest of this year and next season, before he, advised by his agent Scott Boras, heads into free agency and becomes maybe the first $400 million pitcher in history.

Now is the time for Detroit to make a push for its first championship in more than four decades. And for Scott Harris, the team's president of baseball operations, that means adding a couple of high-impact relievers capable of generating a lot of swing-and-misses.

Looks like everyone on the outside is reacting as though the last two weeks have been the Tigers’ true level as well.

I don’t think it is, nor anyone else here likely.  But their flaws are being exposed right now with no aspect of their game working.  As inexplicable as last season’s finish/this year’s start was, so is the current tailspin.

This is not an “all in” roster.  Make moves that will help this season and beyond, trading from organizational depth—no rentals, unless the price tag is so low it’s hard to say no.

Even BETTER!

Matt "I'm 27 and I STILL haven't found what I'm looking for" Manning.

Alex "I have no idea where the ball is going" Lange.

And Jason "Mmmm, good coffee!" Foley.

As our late innings TRIFECTA!!!

You know.

Exactly. Trade for the future, not just for a band-aid.

All season long, I was hoping the Tigers would trade for some quality pitching. But with their recent offensive problems, back end pitchers really wouldn't help. We still need bullpen help but we need to find some consistent bats. Score more runs. The entire lineup is in a slump, just like most of the first 3/4 of 2024. Up until mid-August or so....people forget.

Question—would acquiring Bednar, Keller and Suarez have prevent this current slide?  We really haven’t blown any saves, so Bednar would have not impacted. Suarez is one bat in an entire lineup that isn’t hitting.  His power would probably not be as strong in Comerica and his D is not great.  Keller might have kept them competitive every 5th game.

The reality is that this team has so many flaws that even adding three significant pieces would not be enough to turn things around.

Current slump, yes.  Previous 140 games, this team was so balanced they didn’t have a losing streak greater than 3 games and had the best record in baseball.

When basically every hitter and pitcher is slumping at once, it will look bad.  The rotation overall is solid.  The hitters as a whole are solid.  The base running has been exceptional (can’t tell in this slump as they aren’t on base)

The bullpen has needed swing and miss all season (and last).

140 games says a lot more about who they are than the last 11.

They need a breakout, to stop pressing, and get back to working counts on offense, and pitchers not letting innings blow up.

They still need bullpen help (and yes, Bednar may have prevented Tommy K from being blown up immediately after it happened before.

The only impact of adding a big bat now might be psychological in that the hitters might feel a little less pressure..the cavalry has arrived so to speak bit we might achieve that with Carpenters return as well or maybe the next game when we get some big hits. Could be tomorrow so tune in and bring your positive karma. Let's manifest it !!!

Just for arguments' sake... Now change those names to:

Jacob DeGrom (or Joe Ryan); Mason Miller, and Austin Riley.

Yes, three more All-Stars would definitely help. Of course, we already have six on the team, so …

I find it interesting that the same team, among the youngest in the majors, that we thought a month ago had finally found their footing in the big leagues is now thought to be irredeemably terrible and beyond repair.

It’s possible might actually be irredeemably terrible and beyond repair after all—and no doubt, a few of the guys are on this roster right now are—and who knows, maybe we will end up having to blow up the whole team and start over. But I’m going to give them the benefit of the doubt at the moment and choose to believe that for a lot of these guys, the guys who can be saved, this is more like a step in the maturation process. They’re learning how to manage themselves through horrible slumps like this, and I think the best of them will be better for it. We might even be using this specific opportunity to determine who to weed out going forward into next year, and even into October. 🤞🏼

This is a really hard stretch to go through, and it’s definitely hard to watch, but I’m not throwing in the towel quite yet.
