When I was reading an article about all this, I didn’t realize all this other gambling stuff had come up, which I guess is old news:

“The situation with Clase and Ortiz comes after MLB suspended five players for gambling in June 2024, including a lifetime ban for San Diego Padres infielder Tucupita Marcano. MLB said Marcano placed 387 baseball bets totaling more than $150,000 with a legal sportsbook in 2022 and 2023.

Athletics pitcher Michael Kelly and three minor leaguers — San Diego pitcher Jay Groome, Arizona pitcher Andrew Saalfrank and Philadelphia infielder José Rodríguez — received one-year suspensions.

Umpire Pat Hoberg was fired by Major League Baseball in February for sharing his legal sports gambling accounts with a friend who bet on baseball games, and for intentionally deleting electronic messages pertinent to the league’s investigation.”

He got the Jack Flaherty deal...$20 million each in '26 and '27, $ 3 mil signing bonus and $3 million buyout before '28.

He is old but better than Flaherty.  That's a good deal for the Royals.

Not great.  One less closer available this deadline. And prevents the Guardians from potentially moving another reliever, ie Smith, probably keeping them both for the rest of the season.

Zero chance Clase was coming here even if Cleveland had him on the block, which itself I doubt.

If they still do have him on the block, it might be because he's got worse dirty laundry.

This whole Emmanuel Clase thing is deeply troubling. He’s an all-star for God’s sake. This isn’t like somebody I never heard of. Not that I’ve heard of everybody but, darn. Accusations like this are deeply dispiriting.

If I were a Cleveland player, I would be so furious about this stuff. Fellow players undermining their performance to undermine the team. I doubt that stuff like this makes for a very good clubhouse atmosphere.

dont know thats the problem with gambling cant trust anything

Which is why they have had strict rules regarding gambling for a century.  Now, they are actively promoting and encouraging gambling.  It puts the integrity of the game in jeopardfy even if nobody is doing anything wrong.

I definitely had my suspicions about the past week as anyone who experiences the inexplicable would.

You have to be worried if its wrestling or are they putting their fingers on the scale?

It would be in the best interests of MLB if the AL Central had an actual race?

Didn’t think he’d come to the Tigers, but one less elite closer on the trading block could drive the price up for the few remaining.  The silver lining is that the Guardians get screwed.

I was looking at the Twins roster yesterday and noted some intriguing pitchers (Duran, Coulombe, Jax).  Paddack was not one of them.

Paddack might be somebody they could fix, but he doesn't seem to address any immediate problem.  Perhaps, they think he can work as a reliever?

Paddack is a jag who has had tommy john surgery..i guess he can be a back end starter to an extent.

Well in relief in 2023, he had 14.4 K/9..........of course it was 2 appearances for a total of 5 IP.:classic_laugh:

The flipside is I wonder if they start losing games from losing one of their top two relievers that would knock them out of wild card contention.

Too close to the deadline for the team to decide what the impact of losing Clase will have...

But for what it's worth, if I were the Tigers I'd have more interest in Cade Smith anyways... Not that there was any chance of that happenin'...

He's a warm body...better option than Montero, SGL, and likely Melton.

Melton can move to the pen and give a high K/9 potential.  Same with SGL I guess.
