Yeah, no thanks.  This would be a massive overpay, not to mention it's been reported the Tigers have zero interest in Hayes.  BA just said Rainer, if he didn't get hurt, had a realistic chance to be rated higher than Konnor Griffin who is their #1 ranked prospect currently - in other words he isn't getting moved to Pittsburgh unless Skenes is coming back:

The Skinny: One of two high profile prep shortstops in the 2024 draft, Rainer hasn’t had the rise of Konnor Griffin in 2025, but if not for a season-ending shoulder injury he might have ranked even higher. Rainer is an advanced hitting shortstop with a plus power-hitting peak.

Bednar is the only one of the bunch I'd really want and I think he's more likely to cost  something like Jung and Anderson/Hamm than he is one of our top 6.

They aren't also aren't trading Vierling.

That blurb suggests that Rainer would be ranked higher than where Rainer is currently. Not that Rainer would be ranked higher than #1 Konnor Griffin.

Harris failed with these 3: he signed Boyd, Maeda and Cobb for $50M and got nothing from them.

Can you really fault him though? All three had proven track records. Cobb was signed to quite a rich contract. I think he was worth taking a risk on, but we knew he'd take some time. Hopefully he comes back for 1/2 of Aug and all of Sept/October. Even if they need to move him to the BP.

Posted this in the throw around ideas thread. Looking more and more realistic each day. (Please note general consensus is no on our end because everyone loves Rainer).

Tigers get:
Mitch Keller
K'Bryan Hayes
David Bednar
Thomas Harrington

Pirates get:
Rainer
Lirizano
Hamm
Vierling
(Not sure if we'd have to include Ty Madden to balance this out or not)

Trades that complicated rarely happen at the deadline

It is rare indeed. That deal seals up every hole we have though. (I don't think it'd happen but it would).

That came down to the very last minute—they had to pull Austin out of CF in the middle of the inning to consummate in time.

Was it due to time or just "he's not on our team anymore, get him out of there before he gets hurt or something and it voids"?

I don't know, I was at Michigan Adventure at the time and trying to get updates on a dying cell phone while standing in line for a roller coaster.

I guess I took it different based on the comparison they did between the 2 when both were healthy earlier in the season, but I can see how it is likely the way you say.

I was at Comerica and saw Austin leave and then read the news via Twitter. But since my daughter wanted to ride the merry go round we left our seats to go there so a bunch of dads in line with their kids heard the news first from me.

As for Suarez:

Yes rare, meaning in frequent, not never, which is why I said rare. But outside of that can you remember any 4 for 6 deadline swaps involving multiple big leaguers? Would you remember price if we weren’t involved?

almost all deadline deals are 2 for 1 or 3 for 1 swaps where a major leaguer goes for prospects

Jays get RP.

This is mostly what goes on. You should/do not have to trade a top 100 prospect for a decent RP. Heck, this prospect might rank in top 15 on Detroit's list - yet, maybe Baltimore rates him a bit higher from their end.

Yep, only way a top 100 goes is for multiple years of control of a dominant closer - IE Duran.  I don't include Bednar because as recent as 2025 he was sent to the minors (and was awful in 2024).

Again, I'll be shocked if Suarez gets moved for a non top 50 prospect. He'll at least get a top 100.

Possibly but he’s a 34 year old rental.  I can see them taking a group of prospects all from outside the top 100

I think you are overrating him. He offers power and little else, and I’m not sure how that will play in Comerica. He’s an aging, strikeout prone, maddeningly inconsistent rental.

Agree. Harris' job is to figure out who will be good in the second half.

I guess we'll find out in 48 hours. If he's traded, he's netting a top 100 prospect.
