I just wish he ran more fluidly. His odd body conformation worries me wrt his long term bone/joint health. But it's the kind of thing that somebody might do fine with his whole life, it just looks like it's unnecessarily stressful.

Every time I see Riley bang into the outfield wall or make a diving catch and skid on the grass, I hold my breath because of his past injury history. Lately, when all the other cylinders on the club were seemingly misfiring, his was not.

Noticing in the Freep that some local chain I'd not hear of called "Savvy Sliders" has a Kerry Carpenter meal. 

Kerry Carpenter is .059 with an OPS of .229 or some such over the last week.  Please return to hitting Kerry.  

Meanwhile Javy's resumption of goodness has resumed. 

Weird that Andy Ibanez has just gone away.   Baseball be like that I guess.

Carpenter was struggling for a bit before this but this brutal week coincides with when he got sent home and looked like he was running in slow motion while doing so. 

Coincidence or did that further aggravate his hamstring?

No matter what happens with Andy he can take solace in knowing that he will always live in Tigers lore thanks to that game winning hit against the Astros in the playoffs.

Our relationship with these Tiger teams is not yet as tight as the relationship we had with those late 90s, early aughts Red Wings teams when the rivalry with the Avalanche culminated in the Darren Mccarty fight with Claude Lemieux and that was truly the moment when he never had to pay for another beer in Detroit (although he his now a friend of Bill as i understand). 

Still, i think a few Detroit sports figures are in this same boat.  Barry for the 2000 yard season, Gibby for the 1984 WS final game HR ("He don't want to walk you?!"), and Jared Goff who is currently bullet proof for winning a playoff game for the first time since 1991.

Part of the appeal for those guys is also the fact that they live here full time so they are part of the community.  Especially hockey players as their off season is the summer so where else would you rather be?  And Darren's basically a local anyway.  Goff could attain that too but today's athletes make so much more money than they did even 25 years ago that I doubt he sticks around when his playing days are over so the connection is gone.  For example, Miggy just listed the house he owned in Grosse Point Farms for sale.  He doesn't need it.

Miggy's connection to the city has always been depressingly thin.  For as great a ballplayer as he was, he never seemed to be part of the town.  

As for living in Detroit...its currently the retirement play to do that.  I'll be looking to travel where its warmer in Jan and Feb when i can though.

My old neighbor had a good setup in FL.  He got a double wide in a 55 and over community with it's own lake and golf course.  It wasn't expensive at all.  He didn't keep anything there he'd miss if there was a storm.  And the neighbors looked after it for him in exhcange for letting them use it for guests to visit.  But that was also 15 years ago so who knows what it's like now.

I thought we'd get some land given to us in TN but I guess that uncle told everyone that.... and the girlfriend/wife got it, has it, etc.  But all of my people there are almost gone.

My wife will no longer support any business or entity in Florida more than to the minimum requirement of necessity for a vacation so no chance we own property there even though it would be within the retirement budget to have a side condo there.   So, VRBO it is...

Meanwhile our future property in the Northville, South Lyon, Milford, Ann Arbor triangle is planned to be some place with a couple acres and an out building or two for the toys. 

*toys here literally means about $40k in legos

It's pitch recognition. Some of his swings during this slump look very weak, half swings like he's totally fooled. He'll snap out of it, hopefully soon.

I would argue that Magglio’s HR vs the A’s in ‘06 was the most significant/memorable moment across all Detroit sports over the last 25 years.

In the moment, yes, but in retrospect it's bitter sweet because it didn't lead to a championship. The Pistons taking down the Lakers in 04 was crazy. Not sure if there is one moment to point to that had the high of the Maggs homer, but the atmosphere in the city at that time is unmatched.

With those Pistons, for me, in game 5 Ben had a tip back slam that he timed perfectly over Shaq, and it was like the exclamation point in the 4th quarter

The call was so perfect too - the Tigers march on to the world series! I've watched that at least 200 times over the years. Watching Polanco leap and wave as he lead Maggs around the bases. Always pumps me up!

Can both be right?

Ordonez' home run pushed Detroit into the World Series.  It erased a long history of futility.  But it was the bottom of the 9th of a tie game in a 3-0 series.  The series wasn't definitively over yet with him at bat, not until he pushed a run across the plate.  But it seemed inevitable that Detroit was going to win that series.

That Prince block in the playoffs saved the series for the Pistons, didn't it?  That was a pivotal moment.  I don't like pointing to one play in a basketball game and saying that was it, save for end of game stuff (ie, don't leave Horry open).

I think there's merit for both from different angles.  I think I'd say Prince's block was bigger in the moment.

I think Michigan's 4th down stop in OT to win the Rose Bowl over Alabama and advance to the National Championship game is right up there, although I recognize that not all Detroit sports fans cheer for Michigan.

Both of my personal lowest Det sports moments happened in Boston - 1987 and 2013 - a bird and a papi. Big Shot Bob's 3 in game 7 in SA in '05 is up there as well

while you are at it, the split in the final day make-up double header against the Angels that the league hung on the Tigers that put us out of the WS in 1967 gave the pennant to .... Boston.
