Here's one of those weird trivia question: The Lions have had 29 different people leading them as HC in games (this include intern head coaches and Robert Prince, who was temporary HC for one game because of Covid quarantine from other coaches).

Of those 29 coaches, what percentage would you guess had the last name Clark?

IDK what the percentage is, but we had Dutch Clark, Patsy Clark, and Monte Clark. We also had Marty Mornhinweg. I know is last name wasn't Clark, but he sucked.

I think this is marginally the right call, but I dread the day he makes this call and I have to listen to reactions here.

If I thought the knee jerk reactions to either receiving or deferring were bad…..

It's the right call cause it allows you to know exactly what you need when you have the ball. If you have the first possession you may punt or kick a FG on 4th down cause you don't know what you are going to need where as if you have the 2nd possession you don't have to think about that. You do run the risk of the other team getting an extra possession but I think knowing exactly what you need to do when you have the ball outweighs that especially since its only a 10 minute period.

IDK - True, but I can see it the other way too. A couple of advantages of taking the ball: 1) because you don't know what the other team did, you're under less pressure, a FG might be enough. 2) You have the whole game clock, you can run a more leisurely offense, run the ball more (if you are running team etc) without worrying about the other team having burned the game clock.

In the event that the team going first in OT doesn‘t score at all, that‘s a massive advantage knowing you only need to get into FG range and make the kick to win.

It’s only the wrong call if you think your opponent can string together at 9 minute drive.

There's also the aspect that if it's a tie after both teams get a shot, then it's sudden death... which favors the first team. I dunno... it's definitely more interesting and not a clear cut call like it used to be. I tend to side with the "get the ball second" people, but I do think a case can be made for getting the ball first.

I think in OT Campbell is just the type of guy who is playing for the win no matter what. Getting the ball second means he can finish the game one way or another.

If you held them scoreless, go get points.

If you held them to a field goal, go get a touchdown.

If they scored a touchdown, get your own and go for two.

It lets him put the game in the hands of his offense.

If Brad Holmes has had a bad draft class it's 2024. Both of his top two picks have either been injured or have looked mediocre when they did play. With Arnold and Reed out I think it's time to consider making a move. I've wanted a second pass rusher all this time, but it appears more and more than secondary help and CB are the bigger need now.

Bad news on TA. 

It will be good to get McNeil and Paschal back. DJ Reed probably week 9. Unfortunately we have the Chiefs and the Bucs coming up, then bye, then Vikes, Washington, Philly. Not sure we can wait for reinforcements.

Arnold was actually good in this game against one of the best receivers in the league. The Lions defense has been better with him in the field than off.

As Motown said, in the other thread I posted from Pride of Detroit that showed the Lions are the top defense in the league with Arnold on the field and bottom 5 with him off it.  He also held receivers to 50 yards in the last 2 games combined.
