I wonder if Pittsburgh would have any interest, and any assets that would interest the Tigers, in a trade for Torkelson.  Pitt is trying to get better for Skenes, and they got little out of 1B last year.  So he might fit for them.  If the Tigers want a veteran and an actual 3B and therefore are interested in Bregman (today's reports say 'yes'), this would open 1B for Colt Keith.  Whatever assets Pitt might be able to send back may ameliorate the overall increase in cost that is effectively swapping Tork for Bregman.

It was a joke.  There was a song back in the 70s.

I figured as much and was also joking. I kind of remember the song and  probably because I am also a short Man and getting shorter. I never thought 5'10' was short until I walked into bars at 18. But living in Taiwan for seven years I was "tall for awhile" and that was nice. Taller is better for sure. Oh well.

Good question.  Keith is younger, so may have more room to grow but so far he isn't better.  Keith would probably bring back more in a trade.

I guess I kind of think Keith presents the prospect [there's that word] of being better than Tork.  So far he hasn't been is correct.  I don't think Tork has any real upside left.  At best, he'll get a little BA/OBP boost from more accurate strike calls in the future, but I think he's a finished product, for better or worse.

Would we be considered such an up and coming team after letting Skubal go? I would bet other guys playing in the league would conclude we would not be. They also probably remember how this team purposely tanked just a few years ago. And I could also see where a player, a human being with opinions who has agency outside of his agent’s whims, would be willing to steer himself clear of a team that refused to commit to Skubal.

What if Skubal chooses to leave? He’s not under any obligation to stay.  Did it prevent either San Diego or NY to appeal to other free agents when they both let Juan Soto leave?  And teams have tanked numerous times to stockpile young talent.  Houston did this famously and subsequently become a playoff team.

Players will go where they can get the most lucrative deal for them. Not every player can go to the NY teams, Dodgers or Cubs.  Thank God for roster limits.  Eventually some players will have to consider other markets. The Tigers have a very compelling case to make to appeal to free agents.

San Diego and NY also had 2-3 other superstars on their teams at the time in their lineup..... The Tigers got 0..... (You could make a case for Greene, but he's not Aaron Judge or Tatis......). Trade Skubal.

Which side of the argument are you on? Trading Skubal vs losing him via the free agency process is potentially more damaging to the Tigers reputation.

(though I still maintain that neither would have much impact on other players consideration).

I don't think you can make the case for Riley Greene as a superstar. He has barely been a 2-win player for three of his four seasons, and that includes this past season during which he played 157 games. I'm not even sure we can conclusively regard him as a star, since you don't dread it when a star is coming to the plate for fear he will strike out yet again.

The only superstar we have on this team is Tarik Skubal, full stop. And unless Scott Harris is secretly planning on walking out of the Tigers' front office double-flipping it off as he leaves for a last time sometime before Opening Day, Skubal ain't getting traded.
