I love the spirit of giving during these holidays... Not even gifts... But the giving of warmth and kindness, patience, love to family and friends, hugs and kisses... So the gifts are just a part of that (to me) and it doesn't even have to be big things... just something small in a "thinking of you" manner. Also, I don't believe in an all-consuming everybody, only those closest... outside of that it has to be an agreed upon thing... So... I never want to overdo it... But I do enjoy a few small gifts, giving and receiving, with closest friends and family. More than anything else... I enjoy all the smiles and happy spirits/ times... 2 Quote

Edman85 Posted yesterday at 01:01 AM Posted yesterday at 01:01 AM I came across a fanblog article on Mattison using it as a jumping off point for how cheap the Tigers are. This is no such example. In every case of the non-tender and re-sign, the player is brought back for more on the Major League and minor league split than they would have gotten if tendered. It is why they usually accept. This is not a case of the team being cheap. 2 Quote

Annual Winter Solstice festival. Celebration of... from going into the darkness (shortest day of the year...) to earth being reborn (days get longer after the winter solstice/ more sun = earth has renewed itself...) Evergreen pine or spruce because they never die, they are green all year round. What better way of defeating darkness than a green-all-year-round tree? A festival that is approximately 3000 years old. Christians were smart, in order to coopt paganism they needed to usurp all pagan holidays with religious ones... Hence, at the biggest pagan feast/ celebration of the year, Christians would need to find a substitute big enough to usurp... so, they decided Jesus was born on December 25th. The bible says the animals came in from the fields I believe? That would be springtime, or later, not December 25th. So the PAGAN evergreen tree, is now Christianity's. Smart move. But the "Christmas tree" is PURE, and still, pagan. Sorry. Quote

But while we're at it, I hate the application of the tree. I hate dropping the money on it. I hate decorating it, I hate undecorating it, I hate taking it out afterwards, I hate cleaning up all of the damn needles afterwards. I kind of like the lights. But essentially since the woman to whom I'm related by marriage wants a live tree, I'm forking over $100 to be annoyed. And think about it from the tree's perspective. If they're getting chopped down, you know damn good and well they would prefer to sacrifice themselves to become a baseball bat over anything else. 1 2 Quote

My dad was a nurseryman, we spent many of years with a tree "borrowed from the farm" so to speak and replanted for later sale. I dislike cut trees and falling needles, no matter how well you keep them watered. We've gone the artificial route a few times, just too much work for a short period of time and with just the two of us at home if we don't travel around Christmas it's not wort the hassle now that our son is grown. I do have a wooden tree, it works well and gives me the same symbolism. Quote

I do have a wooden tree, it works well and gives me the same symbolism. I remember the artificial tree my parents had. It was stored in these humungous heavy/compressed cardboard barrels. These things were humongous to me as a small kid, they were probably similar in size to a 55 gallon barrel. And they seemed like a hassle to haul up and down the basement steps, but maybe they were just awkward rather than heavy. There was the base, the trunk/"spine", and then the limbs. The limbs were all color coded on the thick wire attachment part to set into the same color coded holes in the base. Quote
CMRivdogs Posted 11 hours ago Posted 11 hours ago Did it have the spinning disc with different colors that would shine on the tree? The ones we've had usually had the lights attached. We just needed to add whatever other ornaments. Just hauling the box in and out of storage became a hassle, and after a couple of years it would be brelagated to a giant garbage type plastic bag. My major seasonal decoration these days are single candles in the windows Quote
