chasfh Posted August 13 Author Posted August 13 I had posted in yesterday's game thread how we came so close to going 22-38 in the first 60 games and then 38-22 in the next 60 in a kind of perfect symmetry. Unfortunately, they went "only" 37-23, so, we don't get to enjoy that. But here's something to enjoy. Some may remember my posting this: As it happened, I posted this the morning of the magical date of June 1, while we were at our nadir, so, good timing! The point was that none of those 255 teams even finished .500, let alone made the playoffs. Yet, here we are on the precipice. So as a follow-up, I wanted to see who were the teams starting out 22-38 or worse who'd had the best 60-game stretch after that. Here are those teams: Season Team G1–60 G61–120 Notes 1971 CHA (White Sox) 22–38 35–25 Exactly 22-38 as Tigers were 1915 BUF (Buffeds, FL) 21–39 35–25 Second-best rebound from ≤22 wins 1972 SFN (Giants) 19–41 34–26 1987 SDN (Padres) 15–45 34–26 Worst start of any near-miss 1995 FLO (Marlins) 21–39 34–26 Shortened season None of them did as well as 37-23. So, these Tigers now have that record, as it were. Then, for kicks, I wanted to see which teams who won more than 37 of their second set of 60 games had the worst records, and, kind of interesting: Season Team G1–60 G61–120 2005 OAK 24–36 43–17 1914 BSN (Braves) 25–35 43–17 2005 HOU 25–35 39–21 1983 PIT 24–36 39–21 1988 CAL 23–37 37–23 1964 LAA 24–36 37–23 All these teams did poorly, but none exactly as poorly as the 2026 Tigers' record of 22-38. Of all the teams above, the 1988 California Angels came closest: same exact second 60-game record, only one game better in the first 60 games. Lastly, which of these teams finished .500, and/or made the playoffs? Season Team G1–60 G61–120 Final W-L Above .500 Playoffs 1971 CHA (White Sox) 22–38 35–25 79–83 no no 1915 BUF (Fed. League) 21–39 35–25 74–78 no no 1972 SFN (Giants) 19–41 34–26 69–86 no no 1987 SDN (Padres) 15–45 34–26 65–97 no no 1995 FLO (Marlins) 21–39 34–26 67–76 no no 2005 OAK 24–36 43–17 88–74 ✅ no 1914 BSN (Braves) 25–35 43–17 94–59 ✅ ✅ Won WS 2005 HOU 25–35 39–21 89–73 ✅ ✅ Lost WS 1983 PIT 24–36 39–21 84–78 ✅ no 1988 CAL 23–37 37–23 75–87 no no 1964 LAA 24–36 37–23 82–80 ✅ no We would be in rather rarefied air. Also, it has almost always sucked to be an Angels fan. Quote

Torres is 95% gone, as you can get 80% of the production for 5% of the cost, and better defense too, by using some combo of 5 or 6 guys Mize is not coming back premier FA bats will only come to Detroit if they are paid a premium, so need to draft or trade for them Adding another young RH OF bat to the mix makes sense to me the Tigers think they have a gem in Briceno which is why he is at AAA already not crippling but they let Hicks and Smith go for nothing - they have some more hard 40-man decisions this winter I think we can pay for a premium bat. Again, we'll have almost $100 million open. I can't see the Tigers running out an $80 million payroll for the next five or six years when we've been around $225 million..... Even with the raises to our arb players/ younger players getting contracts (which I'll be absolutely amazed if Clark doesn't get a contract announced any day now). We will have some money to spend. The question is, who is actually good enough to move the needle? Acuna Jr. is the type of player we should be looking at even if he does cost $35-$40 million/year. I'd rather have a hitter through age 35/36 than a pitcher at the same age. Quote

1984Echoes Posted Friday at 11:47 AM Posted Friday at 11:47 AM Question: Verlander gets back to the Tigers mid-September. We make the playoffs. Do you prefer: A) Verlander be the 4th or 5th starter after Melton/ Jobe/ Montero/ River Ryan? Or... B) The closer, instead of Kenley Jansen? I have my personal preference; I will state it in illustrative form: In the 2026 playoffs, Justin Verlander gets 9 saves for the Detroit Tigers, including in game 7 when he strikes out the side in the 9th against the Dodgers - Ohtani, Max Muncy (PH'ing for Andy Pages) and Freddie Freeman - winning the 2026 World Series for the Detroit Tigers. But that's just me... Quote

Maybe he can go a few innings, and there's value in that. But I wouldn't mind seeing him as a RP to finish out the season, there's certainly opportunity for improvement out there. Quote
oblong Posted Friday at 12:00 PM Posted Friday at 12:00 PM can you ****ing imagine JV coming out of the bullpen in his final career game to close out a WS win? It's too impossible to dream up. The flip side is getting a blown same in a game 5 ALDS... that would not be cool. He did come out of the bullpen in the playoffs with Houston. 1 Quote

Another thought is: Maybe he will need longer warmups to get his pitches to where he wants them by the start of the 9th. But... If he knows he is getting the 9th each game, he can start his warmups early, in the 8th inning just for example, so that he has his best pitches under control by the time he needs them. And he doesn't have to warm up for every single game as, if it's a lead/ losing by more than 3 runs, turn to Jansen for that game and JV "gets a day off". His daily warmups would need to be limited/ monitored... but there's extra days in the playoffs so that helps too... Just a few thoughts there... Quote
