I suspect it's because Short plays superior defense around the infield.

Makes me think that Torres is actually injured bad enough to get on the DL and they will use McGonigle at 2B when McKinstry is back and Short will back him up—-and then platoon Keith and Lee at 3B

IIRC, when they drafted him Workman was rated a plus defender, but maybe he never lived up to that.
