So Jones is a better hitter against LH pitchers then Carpenter. And Short is a better hitter against LH pitchers than Keith is. With Perez, Short, and Jones in the starting lineup, the Tigers will be shutout. Pathetic, lazy managing. Forget platooning, it isn't working...put your best hitters in the starting lineup. This is one of the reasons we're 15 games under .500.

Look at Hinch's lineup tonight and pick up a book. Why even bother??

Hilarious FAILS.

Carpenter, Greene, McKinstry and Vierling. The problem is a backup for CF. And too many LH bats. At SS we have McKinstry as the only backup, Short has a spot until Javy gets back.

Perez is 5 for 27 in his last 7 games ---  3 of the 5 were HR. 🤷‍♂️

Well, since Carpenter apparently can't hit LH pitchers and we need a backup for CF, Perez may stick. And Short may be here to backup (and occasionally start) at SS. When Javy gets back, both of these guys may be out. At least Short, they may keep Perez around.

I’m just floored this team is capable of engineering a shut out. And scoring so many runs.

A part of me thinks someone should pinch me, but I don’t want to wake up from this dream.

well, lets just hope you not really floored because the Rays have found ways to pitch and hit as badly as the May Tigers.

McGonigle and Dingler are establishing themselves as star players along with Skubal. Tork, Carpenter, Greene and Mize all have that star potential but haven't put it all together yet.

If we hit homers we win. Power is very important. Instant runs and high energy. Power = Winning. Slugging pct  > OBP.

You can't score a run without getting on base.  SLG is slightly more important, but they are both really important.   Both of them together even more important.

Great information and yes of course you need men on base but three walks and the bases left stranded deflates a team and one homer - even a solo- is a run.

It's very simplistic as am I but sometimes the basics cut through all the noise. I always profess Earl Weaver's mantra of "Pitching , Defense and the 3 run homer " but I guess that was easy with Frank Robinson - Boog Powell bombing and - Jim Palmer - McNally and Cualler on the mound with Brooks Robinson- Mark Belanger and Paul Blair catching everything in sight.

I remember an interview with Billy Beane going into an A's vs Tigers playoff series. He was asked what will be the most telling sign in the series. He said that the team that hits the most home runs will likely take the series. The Brewers show the world that's not always true. But then again, they've never won a world series

slugging+OBP.  OPS is generally the best predictor for team run production of the 'simple' stats.

I think that's a quote from the Matrix

its fuddy duddy English from the 19th c.   The Matrix is a fine movie for sure.

It is all pretty entertaining. Nobody can predict anything with any real regularity. That is why the house most always wins and why sports betting feeds that machine. Heck, with the amount of injuries in sports - it may be the safest bet to never bet, lol.

Of course they all cross correlate to a more or less degree because good hitters tend to be good at all the good things in their ABs, but the logic that home runs with men on base are optimal isn't hard to figure 🙄

Not many outliers on the OPS plot.
