I like the pitch challenges a LOT better than the other types of challenges.  They get the ball/strike challenges right every time and it happens very quickly.  In fact, they are so good, they should get rid of he challenge system altogether and go to an electronic stike zone on every pitch.

On the other hand, other types of challenges take too long and they seem to not always be correct or at least not obvious.

Yeah it’s really integrated into the game seamlessly

A sweep in this series should be the nail in the coffin for selling everything at the deadline, unfortunately.  Not only do we not make up ground but weve proven we can’t beat Cleveland

After the last two years, I won't count anyone out. We just need to SCORE RUNS, you MORANS.

they seem to have a lot of trouble being competitive against good pitching. Of course it's good pitching, but if you are going to call yourselves good hitters you have to bear down and find ways to not make outs against them.

I would prefer Carpenter hit against LH pitchers over seeing Jones or Vierling PH for him. At least he has a chance to go deep.

you try to get the players to play the game you want to play, but once you have a roster, you can only play the game you have the players to play.

Bummer. Scoob hit 99 with ok control and movement. Even the dinger wasn't a bad pitch. My hope bubble has deflated again. I'm more wanting Skubal to look good and bring some prospects.

The ability to truthfully assess your own roster is a huge skill for good execs...Malignant optimism is a thing. Every guy will repeat last year and we will bang our head against the wall doing the same thing until it's too late.

"But the numbers!"

Every player's projection is based on what he did. The better a player is, the more likely he is to be consistent across all time scales, including from year to year - that's one of the things that makes a good player good. But the converse is also inevitably true, bad players tend to be inconsistent over all time scales, which is why they aren't better players, and thus will not project as accurately as good ones.

Harris start thinking about how to maximize trade returns.

He's too busy reading the waiver wire looking for a middle reliever or a utility infielder. He'll let Mize and Skubal walk...pure negligence.

Is this true?  It's something I have thought about, but I don't think it's been tested.  Most of the projection systems project to the mean, so my guess is that average players would be most accurately projected and extremely good or bad players would be less accurately projected.

I also don't know that good players are more consistent than bad players as a bad player can be consistently bad.  Another thing is that a good player can be inconsistent within a season if he has injuries and tries to play through them.

absolutely - injuries can't be dealt with by any projection system - that's a given and I agree is it the biggest driver of inconsistency among top tier players.   Things are also going to break down at end of careers because it's very difficult to know when a guy is going to age out - which can happen suddenly at almost any age over 30. So there will be plenty of noise on that side as well.

But I'll make a counter argument about bad players being consistently bad - while I'm sure it is true in some cases, a player has to show something to get to the. Majors - he has to flash something beyond his mean over some period or he's more likely still in the minors, to I would suggest that aside from injury, there is a reasonable argument that the projection variance should be larger for bad players. That would be a fun thing to run down.

There is no chance that their models projected that Jahmai Jones was going to repeat his outlier platoon from last year. But you keep him around becuase there is no risk associated with him...and if he fails maybe another 4A platoon guy drops off the back of a truck. But we have to watch a guy 2 for his last 40 in advantageous platoon situations..I guess we are the suckers.

Tork is going nowhere. There's no right handed 'power' anywhere in baseball and Tigers have nothing in the minors.

Tork had a bad two weeks in May when he went 6 for 50. He was over 775 OPS before that little swoon and in 97 PA since then he's been pretty much back to normal Tork :  239/299/477

I used to think he should be able to be a higher OBP hitter but at this point he is what he is -- which is a something around 775 OPS.

They’ve gotta DFA Jones though so I’m wondering what the 40-man move will be or if they leave a spot open

You don't need to fill the spot right away, so it would just stay empty until it's needed. As mentioned, that would be Verlander unless they need it for somebody else before him.

Getting swept in this series would dig us an even bigger hole than we're already in.

Yeah - I guess they had to tease us for 9 games before dropping the lid on their coffin.
