I like Mize when he is on the mound but unfortunately that is not too often so I either trade him or often the qualifying contract for one year or draft pick. I'm not extending him.

Alex Cobb and Justin Verlander signed $15 million contracts and didn't give us a single victory. But you would let a much younger starting pitcher just walk? I say extend him, it's not my money. And it may prevent Harris from bankrolling some other 40+ year old pitchers retirement.

It really sucks because he’s been the best he’s ever been this year, but he’s already been on the list twice, so that will suppress what we might have been able to get had he not gotten hurt twice. If he can replicate what he’s done so far for his next seven or eight starts, we might be able to get a good return for him. Anything less than that, though, and we’ll have to weigh his return against a draft pick, assuming he doesn’t accept a QO.

I would happily have him back on a QO

How about a change of scenery trade of two former 1:1 draft picks:

Tork to Minn for Royce Lewis

Lewis has been a slightly better hitter, but has also had injury issues. Both tend to be streaky.

Sometimes a change of scenery does seem to help. Recent example Andrew Vaughn. And Kody Clemens just hit his 15th dinger this year.

It's a lateral move, but I'd be open to it just to see if a fresh start would help either of them. Both are FA eligible in 2029.

Think I’d rather have Tork in that scenario

And I think you will get your wish, at least through 2028. The only way he leaves before that, I believe, is we would have to sellers next year or the year after and he's absolutely crushing it for us.

Perhaps a scenario where Briceno ascends quickly and displaces him

Possibly. He just restarted at Lakeland from injury and he had a so-so season at Erie last year, so unless he took a magic pill, I think his best upside scenario is to start at AA and go as high as AAA next year; and maybe AAA plus September callup in 2028, when he will be *checks notes* just turning 24. So, right on time.

Those of you wanting to see Woo-Suk Go promoted…

we just sent him to the Twins for cash.

I guess his legacy with Detroit was getting the doucher who was Evan Petzold’s podcast partner fired/cancelled.

If he never throws a pitch in the MLB, I’ll still be an admirer.

I have a hunch that Harris might be buying bullpen at the deadline, not selling. Still a crazy risk, but their rotation is healthy and clicking - Skubal, Melton, Mize and Flaherty are all in a zone. Framber could get there. Keider is there to patch holes.

Interesting next 3-4 weeks

Add the offense, too. I think we have the most HR’s since the beginning of June. If we can get a healthy and effective Vest back, along with Jobe in some capacity, we might be able to scrape together an arm or two at the deadline.  However, it’s a moot point if we don’t make up some ground prior to then.

I didn't hear about that. Do tell.

Then they have to cut $ somewhere else as they don’t currently have room to add at the deadline.  Moving Skubal would obviously change that, but they aren’t adding any $ to the current payroll and going into the luxury tax risking dropping from 1st round picks for Skubal/Mize to 4th round picks (assuming that part of the current cba is in effect for this year’s class.)

He tweeted something to the effect of "Woo Suk Go" being Korean for "Kenta Maeda," and got cancelled for it.

Good call. Also since June 1, 11th in runs scored, 9th in wOBA, 8th in wRC+, 7th in xwOBA.

Are we still looking to get Harris fired for neglecting the offense?

Completely different from what anyone would have assumed.

I'm not even sure that's what did it... he followed it up with "Yu Don't Suk is that his cousin"

I won't share the screenshot I was sent.

McCoskey is onboard with me - trade Skubal for THIS season:

https://www.detroitnews.com/story/sports/mlb/tigers/2026/07/06/for-tigers-scott-harris-trading-tarik-skubal-is-power-play-catch-22/90818699007/

"The optimal play would be to trade Skubal, not just for prospects but for assets that can help the Tigers’ push forward this season.
That sounds counterintuitive, for sure. How can they trade Skubal and get better? Maybe they can’t. But the rotation without Skubal — Mize, Flaherty, Troy Melton, Framber Valdez, Keider Montero and, hopefully by the end of the month, Justin Verlander and Jackson Jobe — is still formidable.
And if, somehow, trading Skubal can bring back an impact bat or two, and a prospect or two, then maybe the team doesn’t lose the momentum it’s starting to build.
Easy to say, hard to pull off"
And....
"It’s a critical time for the Tigers. In these next five-plus weeks, Harris is going to have to thread a needle between pushing for the present and protecting what still looms as a bright future for this organization.
This can’t be a selloff, like it was in 2017. The foundation is too strong. Strong enough, possibly, to withstand the pain of losing a homegrown star like Skubal."

There’s not a lot of threading the needle these days.  If Harris can pull it off, kudos to him.  It isn’t impossible, but seems improbable.

Just looking at your summary, in addition a bat or two, they’ll need to fix the bullpen, too.  Maybe the returns of Jobe and Verlander help facilitate that in addition to covering Skubal’s rotation spot.  Maybe that means some combination of Melton/Montero/Jobe going to the bullpen.  I understand Melton and Montero have been good in their starts, but clubhouse politics and seniority come into play here.

Verlander volunteering to move to relief would be helpful but also seems doubtful.  I mention him specifically because at his age, a team isn’t worried about future innings.  At this point of the season, getting his stamina in accordance to a starter’s workload wouldn’t be necessary.  I wouldn’t expect anyone to be able to convince him to do so, but maybe that’s an itch that Hinch’s psychology background can scratch.
