Why are so many just assuming that Mize will not be a Tiger next year?

I’m very open to trying to re-sign him.  Just depends on what the deal would be though.  His groin is made of wet kleenex.

And that's with Flaherty with 3.5.

And that's with the silly cherry picking of ignoring Torres, McGonigle, Lee and any others that have contributed positively.

If you really want a discussion at least try to be an adult about it.

I’m not convinced that Mize is gone (if we don’t trade him at the deadline). Tigers will certainly offer him a QO.  And he may accept—he’ll get $22M and teams might be reluctant to sign him and give up a pick.  He’s been very good when healthy this year, but has a spotty overall track record.  Will teams give up 4-5 years, $80-100M in free agency?  One thing working against us is that he seems to be a bit salty with the organization.

You might be on to something here. I wonder whether we might offer him a rich two year deal with a team option, something front loaded where both years are higher than the QO, like first year at 27 and an option year at 23, or something. But I do agree he’s probably salty and he might just take the opportunity for a change in scenery.

Detroit Tigers trade Skubal to the Tampa Bay Rays

I love when small payroll teams go for it, so the Brewers or Rays are my favorite potential Skubal destinations; both have the farm system to make it happen comfortably. My assumption is OF Theo Gillen is off the table, but anyone else could be considered other than 2026 draftees who aren't eligible to be traded, so let's send C Caden Bodine, SS Cooper Flemming, RHP Michael Forret back to Detroit.

Detroit Tigers trade Skubal to Milwaukee Brewers

The Brewers recognize the opportunity this season presents. They haven't won a World Series in their 58 years of existence, and they are in the midst of a season in which they've got the game's most dominant pitcher in Jacob Misiorowski, a deep well of arms beyond him, a lineup with depth and good gloves aplenty. This is the time to push, so how about a package of RHP Logan Henderson, 2B Josh Adamczewski and infielder Ricki Moneys for Skubal.

Honestly I would absolutely take either of these packages for Skubal. Not sure Tampa or Milwaukee would offer it but these are both solid returns. An interesting sidenote from McDaniel here as well.

"Fans underrate how often deals for players such as Skubal are less about how good the top player is (usually none of the top 50 prospects in the sport is on the table), but more about how many top 150 or top 200 prospects a team can get into the offer to manage the risk, ideally with more position players than pitchers; that's what this deal does."

I wonder why they're speculating INF when we need OF?

Also didn't know that there is no comp pick for Torres.  Making him more likely to be traded.  That nugget from Cody at Athletic

Wonder what the market will be for Torres, if any.  Probably helps that there will be more buyers than sellers.

If Gillen is off the table, then Skubal should be off the table.

That high of a prospect who is already doing well in AA would rarely ever get traded which would make it even more unlikely for a rental. I actual think the package they put together is a pretty fair one.

Philly needs RH bats. And DD has no problem trading prospects for players to help the major league team win every season. A proper way to run a team close to a World Series. Go for it, Dave.

He must be a hell of a poker player because he sure hasn't tipped his hand in four years that he is competent in bringing in average to above average pitchers.

Charlie Morton, Chris Paddack, Justin Verlander, Alex Cobb, Kenta Maeda, Framber Valdez, Jack Flaherty, Jose Urquidy, Matthew Boyd, Dietrich Enns... he sure has a track record of bringing in quality performers. 0.4 WAR out of those guys with Detroit.  And that's with Flaherty with 3.5.

And the money he spent on these guys could have gotten us a couple of actual good players. Hitters that could control the strike zone or pitchers who are able to throw strikes.

This is great news!   Those are NOT the players we want.

He should be fine bringing in average to above average players then.

From the waiver wire? Or more Vierling/McKinstry types? What average or above average player has he brought in? Torres? He fell in our lap.

lol....so he made the bad decisions and the good decisions were made for him?   OK.   That seems like a fair analysis.

Looking around there are very few right handed bats available and he just might be the best one.

Hope you’re correct.  With Lee’s emergence and Max Anderson right behind him, I would move Gleyber in a heartbeat, regardless of our playoff aspirations.

My stance on trading with Tampa is to not settle for a fair offer.  It needs to be solidly in our favor after how some of the previous deals with them have gone.  Same with Houston.

You don’t get to buy Skubal and keep at top 3 farm system too.  Either you sell big or we shop him elsewhere.  You already got Paredes from us for free basically.

I get what you are trying to say but the Tigers shouldn’t hold different teams to different standards just because they have a better farm system than someone else. It should all be about the quality they are getting back. If the Rays offer the best value back the Tigers should accept it even if it didn’t include their top prospect. Why would I want a lower return elsewhere just because I think they should trade me their best prospect?

From what I've read Houston doesn't have much on the farm.

True.  But with a few of these teams—namely the Rays, Brewers and Mariners….you gotta play hardball with them.  Their respective GMs could significantly increase their already good shots at making a World Series and getting their organization its first ever title immortalizes the staff.  You want to step up and go after the Dodgers and Yankees?  Prove it.  Don’t let them feel like they can buy what they need without feeling it on the back end.  How many top prospects did we part with during our decade of competitiveness?

That being said, you treat the Dodgers/Yankees/etc the same way, they just aren’t going to feel the pinch like teams that are economically similar to us would.  Nobody would give us anything last year because we wouldn’t give up Melton or McGonigle—why should these teams get Skubal if they aren’t sending their best of the best in return?  And then we heard all about how other GMs thought Harris was being tough to work with and unreasonable in his demands….ok well we have maybe the biggest trade piece in the last 20 years on the market—so let’s see how reasonable these other GMs will supposedly be when they try to buy.

Gotta sack up and be aggressive in getting what we want, not settling for what we will be given.  This is war.

They don’t.  I just hate when we trade with them because the returns always stink and there always seems to be some type of medical issue that magically pops up right after we acquire someone

Unless we get ahold of someone better.

Tork is eminently replaceable.

IMO.

And the sooner the better.

But... as others have said... The Tigers won't just dump him unless they have targeted/ identified an upgrade... whether that's from internal or an external upgrade, doesn't matter I don't think... he just won't be moved until they're ready to do so...
