25% K rate is not that egregious.

It's not egregious if he does it in the Majors.  Doing it at AA suggests he needs some work.

The guy I would like to see us trade is Torkelson.  Just not sure what kind of value he is.  I don't want to give him away for nothing.  But teams are always desperate for power.

I don't think Tork gets traded until Briceno gets up here to the Show... and shows that he belongs here in Detroit. As their starting 1st baseman. Opening Day Roster 2028? Or before the 2027 season ends...?

Still a crap shoot though. Christin Stewart raked up to aaa. Hope has much better speed, but he does K a lot. I realize I'm sounding glass half empty. The JV trade ended up one of the worst ever. Perez was very highly rated. Injuries are a huge reality. Hoping for the best but expecting the worst, are you gonna drop the bomb or not. I miss scoobs already. He is the best lefty talent I have seen in the old Tiger D (sorry Mickey, RIP). I'll grieve a bit then turn the page. To every season turn, turn, turn......

I would like to see somebody really do an in depth analysis of the two trades.  To me, having the centerpiece be a hitter instead of a pitcher already makes this deal way more friendly to the Tigers.

Also, Daz Cameron had not yet made it to AA.  I feel much better about getting a guy with excellent production at AA than a guy who was still all projection.

FanGraphs has Ryan ranked higher than Hope, so maybe Ryan is the centerpiece?  I don't really know.  There is a wide range of outcomes you could get from both of them.

Stewart could never hit velocity throughout the minors.

I would take Mickey Lolich over Skubal every time.   More innings, rarely hurt and came up big in the post season.

Also I know everyone is doing it but judging the Skubal return vs the Verlander return is an apple/oranges thing in regard to Avila/Harris.  Let's see how Harris does - so far he's impressed me with McG, Clark and Lee.

...  I think of can't miss as someone who is going to be an allstar level performer.  Hope could be that or he could be a lot less than that.

That's the risk.

And I agree with your definition.

I answered Sports Freak's question that way though because it appeared to me he was questioning whether Hope would even make it to MLB, since that's what I was touting.

He will... and he'll be a starter in RF... IMO on Opening Day 2027.

But everything following that is uncertain...

The level he can reach, or does not reach, is our uncertainty and our risk and our fear.

So are the Rays and Guardians. They are all showing us that we too can be a perennial 90-win team that gets booted before the championship series.

And if they keep it up, they'll win a World Series some year.  In the mean time, I think they are providing a lot of entertainment for fans.

The numbers between Lolich and Skubal are also apples to oranges. If you ignore that then Wilbur Wood is better than Skoob. Different era where starters pitched the game very differently. Skubal's "stuff" right now looks more like Koufax. From a career in D standpoint I too take Lolich. But to me, these past 2.5 years of Skubal trump what Mickey did when he was at his best.

Long time listener, first time caller.

Just want to say this kinda sucks. Whether it's that because we are letting a future HOFer walk; or whether it's because we have to; or whether it's because we are a have-not in a sport of very few haves; or whether it's because it feels like there will be no baseball in 2027; or whether it's because we now are looking to the future and hoping (kind of like we've been doing with the Red Wings for 10+ years).

Just a sad day that we've probably known was coming for two years now. Blah.

1969-1973 Lolich 30.3 WAR. 2 year peak 15.9 71-72

2021-2025 Skubal 18.3 WAR 2 year peak 13.1 24-25

Pitchers are developed to go no more than 100 pitches a game and limit of 200 innings.  The managers make sure they don't exceed those and if they do it's not by much. You're mad at Skubal because he does what is expected of a mlb starter?

What do you want him to do, tell the manager to go bleep off and not come out of the game until he reaches 160 pitches?

I think Lolich was more valuable because starting pitchers were more valuable in the 60s and 70s than they are now (which is reflected in WAR).  Which one is more valuable relative to his peers?  This is one if the tricky and also fun parts of comparing players from different eras.

Having the most money to sign players also means having the most money to hire top-of-class front office, coaching, drafting, development, and training personnel.

they also have a big leg up because LA is not only the dream destination for all Asian players, but Dodger scouts are also the biggest stars everywhere they go in Latin America.

When did I say I was mad at him?  Lol, just making bs up.  I said I would take Lolich every time.  I think any honest team builder would.  Lolich is going to give me 40 starts and 25 complete games a season with an ERA+ of 115.  The value of that in today's game would be crazy high.

Players with hefty body types tend not to age well, but they can have successful careers .  The argument has always been that you don't sign those types of players to long term contracts, not that they can't be successful.  He's 21, so we have a long way before we have to worry about that.  The first step is to see how he fares against AAA pitching.

Wilbur Wood was a peak athlete, though

I'll take Old Hoss Radbourne with a 2 year peak of 32.3 WAR.

Anyone honestly think Old Hoss could pitch in today's game?

You have no idea.  And of course when you have no honest argument just toss some more BS out

Wilbur Wood had roughly the same peak era as Lolich.  Of course back then they didn't have to face tough hitters.
