I thought Harris did an excellent job answering all the questions and explaining himself.

The media has a job to do but some of the takes are just ignorant to the point of being annoying.  For example, I read one quote criticizing the Tigers because Hope is the third best player on his team.  Are you serious with that bs?

Tarik Skubal, Union leader and Boras Client , was never going to sign an extension with Detroit and any offer Harris made would have been the starting point during free agency. You would just be negotiating against yourself.

I do think Tarik  loved being a Tiger but he is also responsible to his family and the players association to get the maximum $$ only available in free agency. It's just unfortunate the stars didn't line up for him staying in Detroit. Nobody's fault. Just fate.

But now he is a Dodger and the opposition. And I don't care if he does well or not.

The PR tour that he went on back in the winter, hitting the Wings and Lions games... that's a Boras special right there.

Finally, I don't know where Harris got the 35 players on the 40 man roster placed on the IL. I counted 26 players with 5 who have been put on twice, for a total of 31. I did not count River Ryan.

Bump. I counted again and got to 35 without Ryan. There were some stints I forgot about off the top of my head.

He’s a really smart guy.   I loved his answer when asked if the Dodgers made anyone off limits and he replied they said no to Ohtani.

I also appreciate that we finally have a GM that can speak without literally ever other word being um, um, um.

A couple things I noticed entering the Mize haul into my sheet.

Jackson Wolf has never been on the IL, in this his sixth year as a professional. Knock on wood, but there might be some value in that, even if it is just to munch innings the rest of this year and next in the upper levels.

The overwhelming consensus is we are deadline losers and I knew the narrative would be they pulled the trigger too soon on Skubal (a day early) but also too late (should have traded him before the season started). As Riley Greene says it is what it is. I'm rooting for the new Tigers. I wish them health and success. Screw the other teams.

We are the USS Enterprise after Khan's sneak attack.  We have to use all our guile and tricks to survive.

The immediate declaration of winners and losers is so dumb, especially when one side is nearly always getting players a year or more away from contributing.  If it's a straight trade of major league players, it would make a little more sense, but it almost never is.

Are the players we got in return for Skubal better than a player we would have drafted with the comp pick if we kept him? If the answer is yes, than the Tigers are the clear winners. Yes, we could have gotten more by trading him last season or in the off-season but...it is what it is. Water under the bridge.

Exactly. Look back on the trade in 5 years when Hope is an All Star. And Skubal is a 4.50 ERA pitcher making $40 million a year. 😄

Fixed this for you: And Skubal is a 4.50 ERA pitcher making $50+ million a year.

It still seems odd to me that there would just be one discussion concerning their best player.  I am surprised he even said that publicly.

This isn't complicated. Skubal was never signing an extension.

Just did a search for trade deadline winners and losers. Skimmed through about ten articles. I'm not giving up on this season. I prefer the youth movement anyway.

I am not saying that making the trades was the wrong thing to do.  What I mean is if they were having a winning season, they would not have made the trades.  They would have kept them and tried to win this year.  Teams that sell at the deadline are losers by deinition.

Harris talked to Skubal once about a contract?  I don't know much about contract negotiations, but shouldn't there have been a followup at some point?   I'm just curious.   I didn't want him signed to a ridiculous long term deal.

I mean, he didn't talk to Skubal, he talked to Boras who was going to take it to FA because that is who he is. Skubal is also big in the labor portion of things so he is of course going to push for the most because that's what the labor union would want.

But we have to have the declaration now because its almost football preseason, and once the pigskin flies, nobody has time to report on baseball.

They are losers in the sense that winning teams don't need to make trades like that.  Whether or not they won the trades won't be known for years.

I dont agree. Even if they were in 1st place, if Skubal and Mize were determined to test the open market, getting multiple players for them may turn out to make the trades a major positive. Like you said, we won't know for a few years. Right now, today, I give them a neutral mark. Incomplete...TBD...

There is no way they would have made these trades if they were in first place.  They made the trade because they are a losing team this year.

Should I like the SD trade?  I need someone to tell me how I should feel and think.

Yes you should. I think Kash will be a top 100 prospect next year. Given he may be between 80-100, I still think he'll make an appearance.

The Tigers Farm system is probably going to be a top 5 system. For sure it would if Clark qualified but for some reason the Tigers called him up two weeks early. (I wonder if there will be an extension announced for him soon where that makes his callup a moot point besides the chance at a pick for him winning ROY next year...)

Having McGonigle and Clark signed would be a huge win.

I’m sure those signature losses played a part, but they did not happen in isolation. They were indicative of persistent flaws and those losses merely disclosed those flaws dramatically.

Also, it was clear they had two starters with persistent injury histories who were going for huge multi-year contracts that are unsustainable for other than a handful of teams in baseball.

On the Harris comment about Skubal negotiations (or lack of) from today's Athletic...

https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7490940/2026/08/04/scott-harris-tarik-skubal-tigers-decisions-future/?unlocked_article_code=1.21A.97au.u5n7n0Se2qH2&source=user_shared_article&smid=ta-ios-share

Quote

“We explored an extension once,” Harris said. “The response that I got from Tarik’s agent was pretty clear that he was intent on going to free agency and exploring the market, which is totally his right, and nobody should be upset about that. … It was very clear from the exchange what the intentions were. He deserved it. I expect him to be a free agent this winter, and we’ll see what happens from there.”

Monday night, agent Scott Boras told The Athletic the Tigers presented this offer after 2024, Skubal’s first Cy Young season.

“Scott informed me that he had offered a four-year contract to Tarik for $75 million,” Boras said. “I advised him that a great deal for the Tigers would be something with an eight-year length where he had two years to go until arbitration and another six (before) free agency.”

It looks like a bit of a gulf there. Probably the Tigers thinking "why get into a bidding war they can't  win.".

What they recieved for both Mize and Scubal is probably mor than what they would have received from the compensation picks. Not crazy about it, but unfortunately that's how MLB's market works.

I just can't trust Boras on this. I find it very hard to believe Harris took that offer to him after giving Flaherty 20M and Valdez 30+M. Boras is going to paint himself and Skubal in the best light possible. Obviously Harris won't come out and dispute it because FO don't do that. I honestly think people will be happy we didn't extend Skubal here in 2-3 years because he has had TJ twice plus the other nano-surgery.
