Worth linking an archived article.   This sounds like we got a great kid in addition to a stand out ballplayer.

Not surprising, son of the military, E-9. But I do think that kids today are more polite than kids we grew up with, especially those who grow up in structured environments like playing high-level baseball.

It’s legitimately insulting to his intelligence to suggest Max would use their draft pick status and not the 2.5+ professional seasons they've both played since then to argue he's better.

Wow, hot take.

Thinking about this a little more, I don't believe had we won the KC series and beat Baltimore in that one game he would have kept Skubal after all. I still think he would have sold, it just would have been more difficult to justify. I do believe splitting that Royals series and blowing that lead did give him the handy excuse he could use so the question could be asked and answered and we could all just move on.

Agreed. That was a convenient answer that the media would take and run with, and that much of the fanbase would buy. There is no way that Scott Harris based a decision on a single game’s outcome.

The students I teach (mostly in their 20s) are amazingly polite.  It's a biased sample, but I was pretty stunned by it when I started teaching.

Yes, and more to the point, is this something that can be planned and controlled for? Is it Harris's fault that he signed relievers who have faltered in specific situations because he should have known they would do so, despite their being quite good outside those situations? Is it a reasonable expectation that front offices should know upfront who's going to deliver in the clutch and who isn't, at least for the coming season? What should he have done differently, outside a facile retort that he should have just signed good relievers instead of bad?

Building a good bullpen is where good luck comes in. Look at the 2024 Tigers, mostly a bunch of no names that basically pitched us into the playoffs. Now he signs 3 guys who had 20 saves last year..and they suck. Just rotten bad luck. And much of the pitching issues (bullpen) aren't on Harris. What is on him is the lack of signing a quality RH hitter. We suffered through Jones, waiting for him to hit in key situations, for 3 months or so. But I still say our struggles were the bullpen, we scored enough runs, we just couldn't stop the other teams.

And so late in the game. I mean, still on the fence five days before the deadline? Come on.

We keep burying Riley and he keeps performing.  Did you see his slide yesterday?  Still an athlete.

That’s true, although he is still only 25, so probably only a third or so into his career. He won’t be anywhere near as athletic as in that anecdote during the second half.

I would bet you money that Max Clark does not accept at face value that Kevin McGonigle is a better player than he. That starts with player ego, and extends with Max being a #3 overall pick with a $7.7 million signing bonus versus McGonigle being a comp pick with a $2.85 million. Why give Max so much more money if Kevin's so much a better player? See what I'm saying?

I'm not saying at all that I know for a fact there would be tension between them. I'm just saying I wonder whether it would be a tricky thing to determine how to pay Max on an extension in relation to Kevin's extension money, which I think is an open question and not subject to our conclusions based on what we would like to believe they themselves believe or know, or what their relationship is like.

Looks like you would have lost some money:

"Clark: “I think I would have to go… I think I’m closer to JJ. Kevin is in a stratosphere of his own. I mean, he’s probably already a top five player in the American League at 21 years old. It’s hard to compare yourself to a guy like that, whereas JJ is still… like I said, he’s going to be the Rookie of the Year, and he might be an All-Star. But we have very similar tool sets. We have the ability to hammer the ball and to take our walks. But again, Kevin is on another level. He just hammers the ball. I would put JJ and me more hand in hand.”"

Turns out you can have an ego/confidence in yourself without being completely delusional.

Do you think Clark would have made the major league roster out of Spring Training if he reminded the Tigers that they actually drafted him before McGonigle?

Did Mize ask for more in arbitration than Skubal because he was the #1 pick while Skubal was a 9th rounder?

Ignoring all professional information and saying higher draft pick = better player is flat earther level logic.

Good interview by Laurila as usual.  And Clark sounds as smart about hitting as he looks in his at bats.

I've spent a fair amount of time defending Clark because he is much more level headed and down to earth than he seems from 1st impressions

OTOH, Clark is a few months younger than McGonigle. If he were to find his groove at the same age as McGonigle that would be just about ...now.

Casey Mize 1st start in SD. 3 1/3, 9 hits, 3bb, 8 er. Guessing he's in his head way too deep right now

Maybe it was just a bad outing?

And people say stuff they don't really mean for publication all the time, for various reasons. Even so, Max went on record, so I'm willing to take him at his word until he proves different. And Dave's really good at getting guys to open up.

Do you think the Tigers got enough in return in the deal?

NL scout: Yes, the Tigers got enough for Skubal, a rental piece.

NL exec: I actually think it was a solid return for a rental and definitely wouldn't be concerned if I were them that [Zyhir] Hope was merely one of many good Dodgers outfield prospects. I'm sure they like him, and he is going to be a very, very good player who can really hit. [River] Ryan is an interesting prospect given his age, but he should be able to help them sooner than later.

AL scout: Incomplete until we see how Ryan's return to play goes. Hope is a legit centerpiece type; Detroit will want the swing decisions to catch up to the loud batted ball outputs. Brady Smith has also been trending up since he got back from his elbow rehab last summer. Built similar to Walker Buehler when he was coming out of Vandy, performed well in the California League this year.

AL exec: On the surface, yes. It really doesn't sound like they could have pried [Jesús] Made from Milwaukee or [Theo] Gillen from Tampa, so this return is just fine.
