He put up 16 WAR in 4 seasons for us at a low price, the money we saved with him vs. Granderson allowed us to get somebody like Victor. I believe if Austin hadn't messed up his legs he would have had an all-star career. He was never the same player on either side of the ball after the hamstring injury. I was too young to really appreciate somebody like Chet so perhaps he was better but for me those first 2 years Austin was here were was the best CF defense I have ever seen from a Tiger and among the best I have ever seen period. To add to this, there was about a 10 year stretch where I probably watched more Braves games on TBS than I did Tigers games so I watched a ton of Andruw Jones and I think him at his prime was the best defensive CFer I ever seen but outside of him I don't know if I personally have seen anybody better than Jackson was those first couple years here. The amount of ground he could cover was unreal! Chet didn't have top shelf blazing speed, but he was really sound in all phases. A bit like Mickey Stanley in that regard but Mickey was even less flashy. Stanley never looked like he was working at it, he just somehow caught everything. Hamstring problems mostly IIRC. Lost his leg drive. His 'explosion' as they would term it today in football.
