When I went to the doctor today for my yearly checkup, they said I had gained 3/4 of an inch in height. I’m 73 years old so it’s a little late for a growth spurt.

My only explanation is that they made me back up against the wall and back my heels against the wall, and I was standing straighter than normal.

So if your parents ever said something like “Stand up straight and stop slouching“ I think they might’ve been on to something.

I'm really impressed with the service and the knowledge of the "budtenders." I have a favorite place and the service is always good. Never had a bad experience. If only some of our other retail places could replicate that. Maybe $ has something to do with it. Don't know.

I watched the West coast pot stuff and was in Oregon back in 2018 and it was like a candy store compared to around here when it was still illegal. The Netflix documentary did a great job with Murder Mountain. Things change. I've read there are Michigan pot companies folding up because it's too saturated and unprofitable. Same as it happened out West. If, and this is Ohio we are talking about, they ever get their **** together, will help run the border towns like Monroe out of business.

We are rec now, but  the prices are way too high. For example, an oz of 28% THC weed around here is around $240 where in M squared (Monroe, Michigan) it's $100. Tax not included. 

My son tells me that in Oregon you can get a 28% THC hybrid of gloriously beautiful crystallized buds with an amazing bouquet for $60. 34% is a little bit more.

The places that are right over the border and right off the interstate charge about twice as much, but if you’re willing to travel 5 mi. further out into the boonies, the price plummets because there is an enormous glut.

I don't doubt that one bit. Funny story, ironic too...

2018 I went to Oregon and spent a week with my oldest boy who lived in a town called Scappoose, maybe a half hour or so North of Portland. We are originally from NW Ohio (no Buckeye fans) and never been to the Great Northwest. It was kind of a bucket list thing for me. 10 of us. We went all over the place. Great trip.

We landed Sunday afternoon. Soon as we got settled in at my sons house he took me downtown. About 5 minutes away. I see a green cross. What is this? They were everywhere. Too funny. I have never seen anything like a real life pot store. They let me take pictures, it was so cool. 

So once the euphoria wore off (remember, I'm from Ohio and the black market is tough and expensive), the "budtender" gave me a menu, for lack of a better word. So....I like this one, how much? That would be 170. What? I'm used to paying 300 for an OZ here in Cornhole where it isn't legal.

I'm thinking that's the deal of the century but I'm only here for a week. Luckily, my son figures out I am confused. Dad - that's for a pre-roll joint. REALLY? Yea. A buck 70 for a pre-roll!!! The next thing I said was "how many ya got?"

It was great to see the that part of the country. Me and my girlfriend spent a couple of days in Portland. We bought a deal to ride the busses all over town. That was a ball. Sure wouldn't want to drive.

Oregon is a pretty good place. The coast is beautiful. And the Cascade Mountains too. Eugene has gotten more expensive for (non-pot) cost of living.

One of my kids started going to college in Olympia, Washington in 2016 and this was right around the time when fully licensed cannabis shops could open. In nearby Lacey, Washington there was a main strip with countless cannabis stores. Four months later, 2/3 of them were closed.

Only a fraction of the public is interested in being that high and having one of those shops is not automatically a license to print money.

If you overproduce, you can’t ship it out of state so you’re stuck with it and the price plummets and stores close. And Olympia is pretty far away from a boundary with another state where it’s illegal.

We did a long weekend in Portland around 2005. One of those Expedia last minute things. Never spent much time in the city. We drove up to Mount Hood, Cannon Beach and down the Pacific Coast Highway with a quick stop at the Tillamook Cheese Factory. Along the way we found a roadside fruit stand with some very nice cherries. I remember driving down the road tossing cherry seeds along the way.

It was also the weekend we discovered Pinot Gris. Great time.

I thought the drive to Portland from the Idaho state line was a fun one. You pass through every kind of environment there is in a couple hundred miles.

We had a passing thought about doing that this Summer. We basically followed the Lewis and Clark route from about Ashland, Kentucky to Butte, Montana. Following the Ohio then the Missouri Rivers to the source of the Missouri. That had already put us at 3+ weeks on the road, over 7 thousand miles round trip. The time to get us to the Pacific  and back to Virginia was a bit too daunting time wise and $$$. 

We're talking about possibly flying out to say Seattle, or Portland sometime in the future and hit some spots we missed. I really want to visit Idaho and the Canadian NW sometime.

that's about my limit as well. We did a  long trip like that a couple years ago - across on the north via Montana to CA and back on a more southern route, but my sister is in SoCal so it was almost like having a few 'home' days to unwind in the middle.

I also gained about half an inch when I went to the doctor last week. I'm only 51, but it's still late for a growth spurt. it's a new doctor/office, so I wonder which one needs its height thinger calibrated.

Well, that’s it. When I go for my physical next week, I’m telling the nurse to put down 5’3”.  Last time I was there, they rounded down to 5’1”.  
 

since I’m moving, I’ll be looking for a new primary care physician anyway. And I’m gonna just tell the new nurse “let’s start with 5’3”.  
 

note:  I’ve lied about my height since high school…. Then, somewhere, a doctor’s office actually measured me.  Damn.

I am returning to that lie now.  And nobody better argue with me.  5’3” it is.

When I was driving in Oregon in July, I stopped for gas in Seaside and saw that they did have self-service gas. I knew they still had full-service exclusively in Oregon but I did not know they had repealed the self-service ban just a couple years before. Yet, there was still a guy hanging around the pump looking conspicuously as though he was there to pump your gas anyway. I sensed it was basically a tipping opportunity, so I held firm and said thanks I got it. Also, he was pretty rough-looking, so much that I wasn't even sure he actually worked there.

the change allows for self-service in addition to full service, but requires full service still be offered.
