2026 Live Draft Thread As It Happens
Motown Bombers replied to Mr.TaterSalad's topic in Detroit Lions
ESPN's B team draft coverage is better than their A team. -
I've seen a couple of articles that indicated that several NFL evaluators feel that NIL has made the later round "prospects" less valuable or something. They don't think the talent is there

The Lions should have let Hutchinson and McNeil walk so they can "make things happen for today." -

Because the Eagles let Josh Sweat, Jaelen Phillips and Milton Williams walk and don't have one of the highest paid players in the league already on the defensive line. -

Maybe so. But are teams now refusing to swing at pitches the Tiger bullpen throws? Vest was all over the place last night, even the smaller strike zone didn't matter. He was terribly wild. And that's not acceptable in one of our necessary bullpen arms. I know Lee said his inning splits are about the same but it really seems like the earlier he's used, the worse he is. Maybe it's just magnified, IDK. But his implosions are catastrophic. -
Philly once again figures out how to make an expensive move despite already leading the league in future void money by a wide margin. I keep being told that the Lions have to be mindful of the cap and need to be more conservative. I don’t get how Philly is able to make things happen for today while the Lions are handcuffed.

someone up thread said they miss Meadows - but they played most of last season without him - maybe they are missing McKinstry as much as anyone. Of course pitchers' errors are another problem. Hinch's rep is that they work this stuff hard, but I guess it's not taking. -

I always hate to see my team sign old pitchers. The probability of fall off or injury is always higher. We've already had one and can only hope last night is not a sign of the other. -

The strategy of these bullpen arms nibbling around the corners until they fall way behind in the count and then have to pour fastball over the middle of the plate? Yeah, it isnt working. Fix them, Fetter. Or do we suddenly have an entire pitching staff (except for Skubal) who can't throw strikes? I dont believe that. -

don't underestimate the smaller K zone. Walks are up all across the league, and the Tiger pitchers are actually about average overall. Of course given that Skubal is WAY below average that means everyone else is a bit above, but as a team they are not an outlier (yet?). These guys all need to pitch to the smaller zone - and I don't think anybody should expect to see last yrs ERAs. That said, the converse is that the offense has to better than last year as well because everyone else's will be. -

Any stat that shows Burch Smith as your best BP arm is flawed. Or just cherry picked. -

Unfortunately, if looks as if this team is not going to do anything this season unless a couple of pluses do appear. -
the natural consequence of the overall lack of talent on the team.

given that the lions traded up in round 2, getting rid of a 4th rounder to do so, and then chose not to trade up into round 3, i wonder if that means they dont think too highly of this draft class? or that there's little difference left between levels of prospects? we'll see if they trade future capital today to get someone.

on the red wings' prospects' penchants for sophomore slumps: its much more prevalent here than elsewhere in the league: "Now, this is peculiar. The median data fails to capture the Sophomore slump, implying that while this phenomenon seems fairly common among Red Wings’ young stars, it is not so for the leagues’ sophomores as a whole. This implies that there are environmental factors at play potentially more important than other teams finally having detailed pro-scouting or the mental weight of newfound expectations. For example, in the case of Moritz Seider, as soon as he demonstrated what he was capable of in his rookie campaign he was thrown off the deep end in the following season, logging some of the hardest minutes in the NHL at the young age of 21. This, of course, could potentially help to explain Kasper’s season - he was written in as the second line center at the beginning of the campaign, a position he clearly wasn’t ready for full time (despite rather positive underlying numbers for the first month). The subsequent loss of confidence and line juggling that he dealt with throughout the 2025-2026 season cannot have helped."

https://open.substack.com/pub/mystaes/p/drafting-and-development-in-the-modern?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android&r=7ecc7 great read on the red wings' prospects woes. doesnt leave yzerman blameless, but does note late-kenny's extreme failings. "At last we come to it. The root of the Red Wings’ drafting and development hell. The reason that for seemingly a decade Red Wings fans have pointed to their prospects as a sign that things would turn around, only to be left disappointed. 2013 was a banner year for Detroit, where they found several impactful players that many will be familiar: Anthony Mantha, Tyler Bertuzzi, and Matthias-Janmark (even if he was traded before ever playing for the wings). What followed, however, was a half-decade of drafting darkness from which the Red Wings have still not emerged. It is my hope, not only to convey the scale of this disaster, but that others will use it as a precautionary tale: if you are about to enter a rebuild, you need to have your scouting and development system in order. Just as the Red Wings were beginning to falter at the NHL level, they entered a period of five years where the only notable NHL players that they managed to draft and develop were Dylan Larkin, and Filip Hronek - impactful and useful NHL players to be sure, but not enough to mitigate the missed opportunities elsewhere. During this 2014-2018 period, the Red Wings would under-perform the value expected of draft picks by a cumulative 5 average WAR per season. The 2017 and 2018 draft classes - in which the Wings walked away with Michael Rasmussen, Filip Zadina, and Joe Veleno - are particularly painful for Detroit Red Wings fans."

Having been on the other side prior to the proliferation of AI, it's all part of the script. Since the vast majority of these CS folks make about as much as fast food workers (without smelling like french fries and Jamoca shakes) it's basically required at most companies. If they have the information on their computer screen, there is still the requirement to verify informqtion. A bit like going to the doctor for a series of tests and every person you run into will ask you to verify your date of birth.

The Lions have a 4th so I doubt they trade for a second 4th.
