  1. Worth a read from Tim Miller https://www.thebulwark.com/in-uvalde-the-most-enraging-press-conference-in-american-history/

  2. A lifelong gun owner and Marine from Oregon named Ben Beers had turned in his AR-15 and handgun to the local police to have them destroyed. This is an act of courage. He's going against something he believed in his whole life because he couldn't justify it anymore. This is very brave because by going public he's probably going to be attacked now and I would imagine some of those attacks will include death threats. Talk about patriotism, doing something like this for your country because you know your country can be better. I'll raise a glass or two to Mr. Beers tonight. (The article calls him an ex-Marine.....is there such a thing?). https://www.huffpost.com/entry/oregon-man-tiktok-destroys-guns_n_6291cf7be4b0cda85dbf009f

  4. This. Exactly this. Why should we spend our lives in an armed camp - that's an insane idea of how to live - when it's so much more logical, reasonable, effective, to just remove the instrumentality that creates all this danger in the first place - and serves no other purpose? The guns.

  5. How are fourth graders to be prepared when someone comes in and locks the door and starts shooting? What is “prepared” in that scenario. I don’t want to live in the world you think is required to prepare for this. That’s not normal.

  6. There are ways in which we are giving a LOT of help to the Ukrainians that we have not given another country since 1942-45. That goes for intelligence, that goes for weapons technology. I think its a given that Russia and China are salivating over the potential to get sources and methods and tech from that when the dust settles. That said, the Ukrainians are not getting everything and they are pushing for everything because that's their card to play. Our interests align with their defeating Putin in such a way as it cripples his ability to do this again for a long while. If it ends up with him being forced out or further isolated, all the better. If it teaches Xi a lesson in better manners equals better partnerships, also very good.

  7. And.... if the shooters are learning from the drills how to defeat the drills, that would make those who are proponents of this strategy..... groomers.

  8. That's bullshit...how convenient of you to forget the brave African American security guard who was probably being paid $12/hr give his life to protect shoppers he didn't know in Buffalo...plenty of brave folks out there. Remember all the first responders who died on 9/11? The Uvalde police force are cowardly pussies. Probably couldn't be bothered to save a bunch of brown kids. if 19 of them were afraid of one teenager with a gun, maybe that should tell you something. Now they need security to protect themselves? Seriously, fuck them. Plenty of us healthcare workers put our lives on the line day after day and had to try and save assholes who insisted they didn't have Covid or that it was a hoax and not only had to worry about contracting the virus, but had to fear for our safety from all gun wielding Trumpturd assholes.

  10. Think about it. Until the moment the guy started shooting people… in Texas and to gun nuts everything was ok. “Oh Look a guy in body armor with an AR 15 out in public. Totally cool. Don’t bother him. He’s probably a patriot”.

  11. We’ve reached a point of how to stop mass shootings is it’s own stand alone issue and not just part of the gun control debate. We need to figure out how to make it much more difficult for someone to commit a mass shooting without getting tripped up by the same old NRA taking points.

  12. I think that Hollywood caters to a culture that already exists, rather than creating it. Playing GTA does not create a culture that glorifies violence, nor does watching Elmer shoot Daffy in the face with both barrels. Those things are marketed to a culture that already exists.

  13. Handguns are what you use to protect yourself and family. Nobody is taking these away. AR-15’s and other similar guns have no practical use by civilians and at this point serve no purpose in our society.

  14. The more I think about this, the more I’m coming around to the idea that TV shows and movies from Hollywood are partly to blame for this present state of political affairs regarding guns. Not because I believe TV shows and movies are inspiring these shooters in the first place. I don’t believe that at all. Millions of people, including kids, watch these shows, and yet we don’t have millions of mass shooters going around causing deadly mayhem. As common as mass shootings are in the news, it’s still a few hundred or so per year, making it essentially a one in a million circumstance in a country of 330 million people with access to 400 million guns. I do believe, though, that it’s a problem how TV shows and movies make shootouts look so easy and manageable, where the cops always win the encounter and always within just a couple of minutes, the shooters always end up dying or apprehended, and the cops go unscathed, or at least are wounded only mildly in a way that preserves their pretty model faces for their next agency headshot. When people imagine police engaging armed criminals, it is the sanitized TV show and movie scenes they are playing in their heads, and not the chaotic, messy, bloody, deadly encounters that actually do occur (when cops actually engage, that is), since hardly anyone has ever seen a shootout live and in person. That’s the part where millions of people watch these TV shows and movies, and while only a few hundred people perpetrate mass shootings each year, millions more people come away with the idea that when there is a mass shooting in a public place, the cops will swoop in and save the day—just like they see on the screen. That’s part of what I think is behind the political call for more police at schools and more guns in schools, and in fact all other public spaces. People weaned on these shows and movies think the shootouts are all very manageable, going all the way back to the days of the movie western. We can’t legally stop Hollywood from making such shows and movies, and we can’t legally make them change the way they portray such scenes, since millions of people thrill to the sight of shootouts that seem dangerous for a minute until the good guys inevitably prevail, as required by emotionally-soft American audiences, and giving audiences exactly what they want is good business. So that’s probably not changing. But I bet that if Hollywood somehow showed less of this, or portrayed it in a way that showed how messy and chaotic and dangerous and deadly shootouts really are, even to the good guys with guns, people wouldn’t be as adamant, or blasé, about the idea that America should have even more guns being wielded in public spaces.

  17. So evidently Wayne LaPierre has upped the ante a bit. I believe he used to say that gun ownership was a second amendment right for all Americans. Now, he’s calling it a basic HUMAN right…A HUMAN RIGHT. If that’s not blasphemous I don’t know what is. Does he even understand what a human right is? Thoroughly disgusting.

  20. Guns are very serious tools designed for one purpose - killing. Your right to own a gun is not a concern of mine. I am making a concession here though because I know that banning guns is impossible. So, I am allowing responsible people to own guns while proposing things which I believe will make it more difficult for undesirables to get guns. Guns are not toys and should not be treated as such. It's time to stop making excuses and pretending there is nothing we can do to keep the guns out of hands of people that are slaughtering children all over the United States.

  21. For people that truly believe abortion is taking the life of a baby, it's not that much of a deflection. That said, funny how the only way to deal with abortion is to make it next to impossible to get one, even if a mother's doctor believes it could kill her. Yet when it's 9-10 year old's lying in a pool of their own blood, there is simply nothing we can do.
