Got more of her backstory yesterday. She was found in Detroit in May. All the Detroit shelters were full and the finder could not foster another dog, so they called around and Washtenaw County took her in and gave her to Huron Valley. She had a fairly large mass and they removed most of it. The kind of mass it is - there is a 10% chance it could grow back and I will need to take her to the vet every 3 months. She was microchipped and her name was Lucy all along but the phone call to the number on the chip was never returned. She's been through a lot, but the folks at HSHV absolutely adored her. When I got her yesterday they got on the walkie talkie and told everyone Lucy's going home if they wanted to say goodbye and everyone on the staff came to say goodbye. She ate that up. She's housebroken, and very good about it. I'll be getting a lot more exercise with her around because she loves walks (don't all dogs?). She doesn't beg for people food and won't eat directly from my hand (yet). She's kind of picky so I got some canned chicken to mix with her food and she gobbled that up. She plays with her Moose toy by herself, she'll throw it around. She loses her mind over belly rubs and her whole body rocks when she gets them (I think it's her tail wagging her body)...........and she is very very sweet, like you can get contact Diabetes just from being around her. She seems to respond more to women than men (except me now) She has not taken long to get comfortable here and she knows she's safe with me. She jumped into the recliner with me at bedtime (I sleep in a recliner). 50 pound dog with me is a bit too much and too warm, but she got down and slept next to the chair most of the night. Follows me a lot but not as much as yesterday. I don't know how long she has, but she's gonna live happily.5 points

Folks, this is Lucy. We just got home so she's a little anxious and she's exploring the whole house. She's a very mellow girl3 points

It may not be once you factor in run scoring environment. (looks it up). It is worse even when you factor in environment.2 points

There’s no argument to be made regarding the handling of the pitching staff. I don’t know what to make of the injuries, but holy moley, what they’ve done with the pitching staff this season would make MacGyver jealous. Given what they’ve accomplished there, maybe they’ve got enough of a grasp of that end to where a capable GM comes in and can move a few arms for MLB ready bats. It’s probably a tall task this off-season given some of the injuries. But some of the arms are young enough, maybe there’s a chance to get a bat or two there, and they can go the free agency route for another bat or two.1 point

I still think it's pretty obvious that AJ and Fetters have done an outstanding job putting together a decent pitching staff with almost nothing to work with this year. It is possible that their handling has contributed to the injury situation but that is speculation that has not been established yet. From where I stand AJ has clearly added major positive value since his acquisition, but I think he has made a mistake by keeping coolbaugh and/or not directing him to use advanced resources effectively. The one thing that I'm going to call bs on is this polarizing approach where Hinch supporters are supposedly stooges, and who allegedly cast blame everybody but Hinch. I have not seen this...MTS seems capable of a balanced perspective without this kind of strawmen construction. For myself, I'm capable of walking and chewing gum at the same time. I have been able to view Hinch as a value added proposition for this club while also remaining objective about his apparent shortcomings and his potential shortcomings. Ive seen this from lots of other folks here too.1 point

They are a bit of a trip hazard. But since the Tigers are rarely on base to trip over them,…. ah, never mind.1 point

I am neutral on Hinch. I don't think he is a problem. It just seems like a lot of fans think he can do no wrong and they want to blame everyone but Hinch for the team's problems this year.1 point

Could it be that bridging from the 2021 season to expectations for 2022 ignored that there might have been a bunch of good luck buried in the 2021 results?1 point

We seemed to have leapt from mocking the Manager to mocking anyone who ever liked the Manager all in one thread, based on resting the incredible Baddoo against a LHP. Let me know when the tar, feathers, and rail are prepared for AJ, his evil cadre, and his oh so foolish supporters.1 point

I'm sorry you're still going through your loss. I am too, despite my new best friend today. Last night I swear I saw Diego in the corner of my eye. But this dog I got...........very very sweet and she goes from 100 to out cold like a 2 year old.1 point

I’m so happy for both of you, ❤️❤️ … and I’m also really struggling with not having a dog right now. I know it’s the right thing for my older cat to not have to get used to another dog (especially since my cat has no claws… so can’t defend himself if a new addition to the family isn’t “cat friendly “) …. But, I’m missing MY Lucy so much.1 point

Verlander's spin pitch was his FB, and that is a different animal. The underhand spin on the FB is from the natural roll off your fingers - hand size, finger strength, skin texture, finger joint configuration and elasticity all provide that without any axial torque on the elbow. Of course there is still torque on the elbow with all pitches, but you aren't adding any extra twist throwing a 4 seam fastball. My totally unscientific impression is that throwing pitches where you pull your thumb down and rotate you palm outward - basically the slider is probably more dangerous. On the other hand the rotation on a curve is overhand, you are rotating your thumb up and your palm in. Just stand with your hand up and your elbow at 90 deg and flick your wrist down while pushing your thumb forward, then flick it down while also rotating your thumb down. Even in that simple exercise you can feel the difference in stress on your ulnar tendon thumb down compared to thumb up1 point

Was it somebody in here who said their analytics establishment is a giant cluster and a lot of the public comments from Avila and Illitch has been white wash? I forget where I heard that or read it, but it seems to jive. You can have fancy labs and equipment, but without good data, without good analysis, and without good processes, it may do more harm than good.1 point

Good question. So the coach looks at the rapsodo output and says, "when you put your fingers here you get 150 more rpm. Does anyone then model what that just did to arm stress? Does anyone even have tech good enough to do that reliably? There are no free lunches in physics. From Newton on down it's still 'every action has an equal and opposite reaction.' If you are teaching guys to put more torque on the ball, you are teaching them to put more stress on their arm. To my mind that is the big difference with the fast ball. The spin on a fastball is not induced by any secondary torques on the arm, it is the natural result of the primary throwing motion. But as soon as you start putting cross rotation on the ball, you have to do that by inducing a secondary rotation at the elbow or to some degree the wrist.1 point

I noted before that one possible input from the coaching staff is what kind of sliders guys are throwing, what kind of % they are throwing it and now early in the game (before they are completely loose) they are throwing them. I don't think anyone knows very much about what kind of impact these things have in any reliable way, but they are all things I can believe we might one day realize were making a difference. They have also starting doing bio-mechanics, and you never know - if a computer model is faulty or flawed they may be advising guys into potentially destructive mechanics. It's has to be harder to validate computer models against human physiology than against mechanical systems, as absolute accuracy is much harder to come by for the functional dimensions of a human joint than a manufactured bearing.1 point

I think they didn't get too harsh because they knew other teams were doing the same thing. They wanted to use the Astros as an example because it became public. Also, they didn't want to have to punish the Yankees or Red Sox. I agree with you that how Hinch handled the situation does not reflect well on him as a manager.1 point

I wasn't saying that was their entire role. Of course they are not fantasy baseball owners. I was just pointing out one of the main differences between managers and GMs. Managers can only manage the players they are given. GMs, along with the rest of their team, provide those players. It's like any other big business. There isn't just one person doing everything. I am sure there is also a lot going on that fans don't know about. I am just a fan though, so my main concern is what players they provide to the team.1 point

Huron Valley called me and asked if I could foster Lucy while she goes through her medical crisis. I said yes. If am a foster I won't have to pay for the medical issues but I can give her a home with a yard and a companion. I could adopt her after that if her health allows it. I know I am setting myself up for another heartbreak, but going through what she is, and as sweet as she is, she needs some comfort in her life. If things work out she could survive for a long time. I am going to get her on Saturday morning. I don't think I would experience the kind of heartbreak I had with Diego. He was my best friend for 15 years. If I can make her last months or years happy, why wouldn't I? In honor of Diego.1 point
