My son was about to graduate from U/M with honors, and is a popular guy, and all of a sudden he was hit with a freight train of issues that have sidelined him from finishing college for two years. Fortunately we have identified physical ailments that were undetected that surgery has largely remedied, but he has two+ years of pain and emotional dislocation that he is working through with counseling and medication. He may be one of the very fortunate ones to have the right team and diagnosis. Mental health issues are no joke. I have all the sympathy in the world for Austin and I hope that he comes out of this with his identity and life intact.4 points

I fixed a bunch of stuff around the house that had been annoying me for a very long time. My bathroom and media room now have fully-functioning doorknobs that don't come out. (Older house, modern doorknobs did not work). Kind of embarrassing, but I basically live alone with a dog, so it wasn't a super big deal. Fixed my fence gate (for now), so I don't have to lift it to latch it. Fixed the front closet door (hinges were coming out of the doorjamb which is old. Used toothpicks. Replaced a broken medicine cabinet door. I am not good at fixing things. This weekend was a big deal for me.2 points

It's all about the money, always has been. If the Tigers offer the most money, they get the player. When a guy says "I want to play for a winner" he is in his early 30's, the Tigers shouldn't be signing people that old anyway.2 points

While with the Tigers Casey hit a ball off the wall and the fielder chasing it had it bounce back past him. By the time he gathered up the ball Casey was headed for third and beat the throw for a triple. After the game someone asked Leyland if he had ever seen Sean run that fast . Leyland said " I've never seen Casey run that far! "2 points

Even with the benefit of a mental health leave available, a lot of workers aren't comfortable yet asking for one. There's some work to do to get workers comfortable with the idea. This might be one benefit in which the employers are actually ahead of the employees when it comes to acceptance. https://news.bloomberglaw.com/daily-labor-report/paid-leave-covers-mental-health-days-but-stigma-still-clouds-use2 points

Don't give a rat's ass about Ethereum but I'm hoping this puts a whole ton of high performance video cards on the market cheap.1 point

Buch played in the KHL opener I think but now he's down scoring in the MHL. I read that SKA's teams are so close to each other they like to cycle their prospects through all 3 levels when they can so it'll be interesting to see what he does this season. Kasper's skating looks improved a little bit maybe? Either way he's looking good in the SHL so far this season I would say.1 point

Anyone remember this letter the Tigers sent season ticket holders to "be patient"? https://www.detroitnews.com/story/sports/mlb/tigers/2017/08/31/long-letter-fans-tigers-plead-patience/105147446/ It's been five years and the Tigers are no better off now than then.1 point

When Torkeson got back to Toledo, his OPS was 630 over his first 70 AB. In his last 50 there it was 916. Should this be telling us something about the effectiveness of the coaching he was getting in Detroit? It took basically one month with the Hens to turn him back around. Tigers had a charmed season last year and sure it's fair to say Hinch may have had something to do with that, but the evidence has built up that there something wrong with what they are doing with the hitters this season. I wouldn't say it's proof, but it's strong enough to make me question what Hinch is doing either in terms of his leadership, his approach to data/analytics information flow, or his coaching staff selections.1 point

LOL. He won't get it right. He'll go cheap. The only get it right scenario is firing absolutely everybody on the baseball operation side. I mean everyone. Why is A.J. in on hiring the next GM. That's very Lionesque right there. A.J. should be gone too. How people aren't lumping him in with this disaster is shocking to me. Several veteran players all having their worst year and a #1 draft pick that was mishandled from day one...........that's on him as much as anyone else. I'll stick by my assessment that if they don't fire every single scout and every single coach/trainer/evaluator, then they aren't serious about making things better. This has been going on for decades and the only time this team has been respectable since the late 80s was when they had an owner who was willing to spend stupid money to get guys here. Well we don't have that anymore and unless they sell the team, we won't ever have that again. They've hit on some pitchers in the draft, but not enough and well.........the last position player to make more than one All-Star team is Curtis Granderson (2009 & 2012). Either they can't recognize talent or they can't develop it - or in the Tigers case - I think it's both. I won't say Torkelson is a bust yet, but unless we get some different people working with him, he will be. I had a soft spot for Chris Fetter and the job he's done with the pitching staff, but with the unfathomable amount of pitching injuries on this team, I think you have to wonder if he has played a part in that. They aren't just unlucky, they're pathetic and the owner couldn't give a fuck. Well, I haven't watched a game since the day my dog died (July 6th) and I haven't missed it. Look at the post count on Game Threads in this universe of ours. Look at how low it is. I know we don't mean much of anything in the grand scheme, but we're the fucking die-hards and if we've turned away, it's a worse-case scenario because the passive fans will follow. No more cards left to play, the big prospects are here now, all they have left is Miguel Appreciation Day (which should be the last home game this season). What are you gonna sell us next year? Harold Castro is literally our best hitter.1 point

I don't know how nobody at Maryland knew what was going on and they had medical personnel there and I wonder if they were prevented from helping the kid out. I can't understand how medically trained people on a hot day would not have spotted a heatstroke immediately. I remember watching Real Sports and a high school coach in Texas had a kid collapse and he did not hesitate, he had the kids teammates pick him up and run him right into the showers where they got cool water on him as fast as possible......saved the kid's life. How do all coaches not know this? How are they not looking for it on these hot days? The days of Frank Kush and Woody Hayes are over, man, thank goodness. Yeah, Brian Kelly should have been fired. At any point did Kelly himself tell that kid to get up there? I think that was the question and Kelly is like Michael Corleone, he had a lot of buffers. The fact that the kid texted "Gust of wind up to 60 mph will be fun at work, I guess I've lived long enough." and "Holy fuck this is terrifying" says all you need to know about how obvious it was that he shouldn't have been up there. And you know what, the guy in charge has to take the ultimate responsibility, but not when the football team is good, right?1 point

I don't doubt there are scumbags in leadership positions, of course there are. When their scumbaggery goes public in today's day and age - particularly when it results in real-life consequences, like the death of a child (young adult), I think that we see that cost them their job more often than not... as it should!! Joe Paterno got driven out of his position and larger-than-life stature, and his statute taken down, despite ridiculous riots and rallies on their campus. Frankly, I would not have been upset to see Penn State get the "death penalty" or be removed from the Big Ten after that debacle. Comparing it to another tragic death, I think it's arguable that Kelly was more directly responsible for the death of Declan Sullivan at Notre Dame than DJ Durkin was for Jordan McNair's death at Maryland. I don't understand how Notre Dame (and now LSU) can forgive and forget the former as a tragic accident, while Durkin gets fired and blacklisted from all future jobs. Comparing it to Bo is tough because it did not become public until long after his departure and then more than a decade after his death. If the same happened with Harbaugh today, I would expect and hope he would be fired immediately.1 point

All true. But there is one bright spot that you don't have to squint too hard to see... Al Avila is gone. That wasn't treated as a given around here until it actually happened.1 point

It’s truly disgusting where we are today. Outright lies and obvious slander just get a pass, with hardly a raised eyebrow. Absolutely no self-respecting candidate should want an ENDORSEMENT from a person who spews this crap, these unfounded accusations - that are stated as FACTS. I repeat - disgusting.1 point

True, but they are overusing torque too. At least in my training in mechanics there aren't really torques applied to a joint. (Note that I have seen moments applied to a joint, but torques are a specific type of moment, and it is possible there are subtleties in biomechanics compared to mechanical systems that lead to that terminology) Torque tends to be a term overused by people who don't know physics trying to sound smart. Not saying that is what Chaz was doing here because Driveline fell into that trap too, so there is some literature out there. I've just noticed that in ads and a lot of sport discussion. Torque, to me, is effectively a twisting force. I would call the load in question on the elbow a moment, since there is likely some moment couple leading to internal stresses. Perhaps the load causing suppination/pronation of the forearm could be called a torque. I just hear it often in situations where the load being talked about is a point load. When I was looking at research on elbow mechanics in pitching 15ish years ago when I had access to academic papers they called it "distraction" forces. Either way, the dynamics of any mechanism are clear: higher velocity = higher loads = higher stress. Since the elbow is stabilized by ligaments that cannot be strengthened, it is very clearly the weakest link, and becoming even more so as we are training pitchers to throw harder, there is very little we can do to strengthen that weakest link.1 point

It's probably a misplaced hope, but if we ever get an automated K zone, it might be to the relative advantage of guys that throw changes and curves because the pitch which is diving downward is the most difficult for an ump to call, so a pitcher in today's game is left with more doubt than with a FB or slider that even if he throws a good curve in a key situation, the ump is going to miss the call.1 point

what a waste of a season. Lose 3 starting pitchers to surgery. No big breakthrough from Tork or Baddoo, Greene loses half a season, Barnhart a bust, Baez a not quite but close to a bust, ERod goes AWOL, and Austin Meadows self immolates. They should have just stayed in a cave somewhere in Florida and sent the Mudhens to play out their schedule.0 points
