So, depending on where you lived...this could be quite an accomplishment. In the Detroit area where all the dads are auto engineers or mechanical professionals or in some other way very plugged into things with 4 wheels this was hard to win when your dad was a CPA. So, then I moved to northern Virginia and all the dads in Chantilly, VA work at NRO and are rocket scientists and celestial mechanics. Still a lot of fun. I think we did 2nd and 3rd place a couple years in our pack. Later on when my daughter's girl scout group (what is the unit name for GS?) had a pinewood derby i used my knowledge from the boy's time in scouts and her car won. The secret: mount the wheels carefully and keep all 4 wheels on the track and don't let anyone remove the wheels between leaving the house and race time.

I don't want to boast, but I won the pack and went to districts twice. The problem is that I athletically peaked early, and these are my most proud accomplishments in sports. Its been all downhill ever since.

You also got to keep in mind that we also will have a couple drafts to stockpile talent before the big extensions come up so even if we can't resign everybody to big extensions we could potentially in house replacements.

And now just a game under what I consider to be true .500: 28 Wins, 29 Losses (L + OTL + SOL). And if I'm reading it correctly, the Wings are 22-21 in games that end in regulation, and 6-8 in games decided in overtime or the shootout.

we had a category for best car "theme." The art professor dads nailed that one. My best entry in that was recreating the scene from Jaws where Sheriff Brody is on top of the mast of the Orca shooting at the great white who is eating Quint: all done in lego minifigures. The M1 rifle was supplied by Brick Arms. Unfortunately, the mast of the Orca had to be removed in order to race because on our track part of the electronic timing was a wire that hung over the track. And when I say "my best entry", yes this was leaders getting to build and race their own cars against other leaders. My son's went for speed and it was considered uncool for leaders to do that so we went for LOLs. There were a lot of really nerdy cars.

I remember you were allowed to add weight to the block of wood. The balance of that and making sure that the wheels were such that the body of the car didn't drag on the track was critical. I think.

Those blocks of shortening were tricky because if you didn't get it in there right, there could be a fire before it all melted into grease. We had these huge knives we were supposed to use to chop it up but the only thing we used them for was target practice. Stack all the boxes of shortening up against the wall and fling the knives at it ninja style.

I had a conversation about this on Twitter. I pointed out Jacksonville has a homicide rate 4 times higher than New York. Their response was that Jacksonville has twice the land area. I was like land doesn't kill people. Their next response was that New York spends way more on policing than Jacksonville, so I was like oh it's Republicans defunding police and not liberals? Next response was you have been blocked.

In late `97/early `98, I was working as a manager at a BK, in between radio gigs. On Friday, January 2nd they were rolling out a new french fry - they called it "Free Fry Day". My boss says "Before you leave tonight, we need to have all of those fry vats emptied, cleaned, & refilled with fresh grease for tomorrow." Being that it was New Year's Day, & Michigan was playing for a national championship, I was the only non-teenager working - so I had to do all of the work myself. I got it all done - save the last big block of shortening, which had to only be put into the fryer & we could all go home. I had a teenager open the box, dump it in the vat. He neglected to check it first - There was a piece of the cardboard box stuck in the shortening - which then caught all 3 vats on fire. & you could put it out by putting the tops on, because the shortening was sticking up out of the vat. So I had to get the fire extinguisher out - put it all out - drain them all again ... & then do it myself.
